Faegrowsstarted grow question 3 years ago
Can (fruit) flies harm my plant? I have a few of what I assume fruit flies - thesuper tiny ones- flying around the plant in my growing space. I can only see 1 or 2 when I come across them. Can this harm her and if yes what should I do?

Not fruit flies, but fungus gnats and thrips! And if bad enough, yes they can harm the plant! You need to do three things—- get foliar and soil spray—- like lost coast, dr Zymes, Athena ipm, etc—- yellow bug sticky traps in the soil and diatomaceous earth powder on top of the soil. Good luck

I usually only use sticky traps and try not to over water or water to frequent to prevent it. Last infestation I had I just let my medium dry out more and my traps caught most the adults and what was left didn't do much harm if any. Also I made sure everything was cleaned thoroughly after that grow. I have actually found one in my tent today and I had over watered all last week. Killed that fucker and have started letting my medium dry out more to make sure I'm not breeding the little shits. Think your problem has jumped to my grow.🤣

Normally fungus gnats have to be a bad infestation before they harm the plant. Usually they are a sign of too much watering. If you let the top 3-5 cm of soil dry out before they should go away. You can also put out a yellow sticky pad insect trap.

@wake_n_bake73 thanks! I am a noob and had no clue. I figured because that's what they looked like to me to the eye and I never heard of the knats. I'm googling already what I can purchase against them. I can orderGUARD N AID DIATOMITE but I assume I need to order some spray too

@hashy, thanks I had no idea! I hope I'm not too late, I'll try and purchase one of the items from Chitowns list to get rid of them in Europe here.

@ChitownCannaChica, oh my gosh I didn't know thank you. They were tiny flies and I'm used to them coming during the heat so I figured that how they appeared after the heatwave. We have a few in the living room as well. I will definitely look into one of those and see if they sell them in Europe so I can get it ordered.

Are you sure they are not fungus knats?? That is certainly what they sound like What makes you think they are fruit flies??? Me I would get rid of any flying things near my grow as @ChitownCannaChica has already suggested Athena ipm is really good to treat fungus knats and anything like that and sticky traps as they will definitely hurt your grow Have a read on the help pages about fungus knats and causes and how to prevent them. I hope you manage to get it sorted 🙏

As Chitown said, they will be fungus gnats. Usually thrive in damp places, so if your medium is to wet that's where they will have come from. Either follow chitown on the advice or look up fungus gnats.
