What causes mutation? Is it the strains? Will silica do this to the plants? I'm interested to know exactly why this happens or if anything triggers it.
Hello. When you get right down to it, Cosmic Rays cause mutations. A Cosmic Ray can damage a part of the DNA which the cell repairs, but doesn't always get it right. That is where the mutation comes out. Mostly the strain passes the mutation on to the next generation. The mutations can be either good and helpful or bad and destructive for the plant. Chuck.
Minor mutations are normal and completely random, just like how some people get freckles or dimples.
Leaf mutations are very, very common in cannabis and of no real concern.
It just happens and nothing triggers it.
@Cucumbersinmybackpack the mutations are caused from the breeding process and the amount of
inbreeding of strains that is happening now in the Cannabis world .
there is a real possibility of extinction of the original cannabis we love through over hybridization
Mostly random genetics acting up. damaged DNA, or an environmental reaction to something.
Would not think/worry to much about it, that more for breeders and people trying to create generations of plants.
Good Luck!
If you look at my zkittlez organic the first 2 weeks she had a few mutations but she grew out of them and on another plant done the exact same way in the very same conditions is growing fine. Just luck of the draw thing, unless you are doing something drastic we really can't control where nodes or fan leafs grow... hope this helps.
