When would be the best time to top my plant to promote that new branch growth?
I've seen and heard many different opinions on this so some clarity would help.

You want to have at bare minimum 4 nodes before you contemplate topping a photoperiod (and don't EVER contemplate topping an autoflower!). General rule of thumb is when the plant has 4-6 nodes.

I top after the third node. So I also remove the 1st node branches, then cut off after 3rd. So I have 4 branches in end. Then lst them out making a big plus sign.
