Is it OK to just let an auto flowering plant to grow in the window sill or on a stand away from the glass? Does it just take longer to mature? Planted may 1 and not ready yet. Also can I start a winter plant again using natural light if I keep the room warm enough? Beginner here.

Your plant will need a minimum of 6-8 hours of DIRECT sunlight on its leaves to grow properly. Ambient/reflected light will not provide enough energy for the plant to grow anything but slow and small.

Often windows especially if not south facing (or north if you live in the southern hemisphere) will not offer enough light which makes the plants take longer and finish with very small yields. Environment simply sets limitations to what a plant can do, and there is a specific amount of light combined with its intensity (within the correct spectrums) that each plant needs to stay alive or develop. Weed has pretty high light needs, and therefore in most parts of the world you can successfully grow it without artificial light only some times of the year even outdoors, and inside behind a window it will receive only a fraction of it, as windows filter light. Therefore while growing on a window is possible at least in parts of the world, if you wish to reach the plants full grow potential, you need to grow with artificial lights indoors, or outdoors during the best times of the year. If you wish to start indoors, you can grow a plant or two in a 2'x2' tent with 100-150W LED grow light. Or you can continue to experiment on the window sill but keep its limitations in mind, and if possible place it as near the window as possible and preferably in a direction that receives the most light. Autoflowers have genetics that determine their lifespan, and even if it develops slower due to light deficiency, it doesn't mean it will just keep going until it's done flowering, but somewhere around 4ish months it will just come to end of its life regardless whether the buds are all the way done or not.

An auto will mature and flower based on it's genetics NOT the growing conditions. The growing conditions affect the yield. So, your plant will likely survive but will not produce as much as it would with more light. An auto needs about 18 hours of light each day. It is not the end of the world, just do not expect to get a record breaking harvest. The problem with growing in winter with natural light is the amount of light. You can start a plant but it will not do well with the reduced light of winter (assuming you are not in the tropics).
