This is perhaps the only issue Organoman and I disagree on... Removing leaves does a number of very beneficial things for a grow - it lets light in to the lower bud sites, it increases air flow (preventing funguses to take hold) and requires the plant to put its energy into the buds, not the leaves. But you should always have a reason for defoliating... not all plants require it... and I certainly would never EVER entertain the idea with a plant that is still in veg... if they're blocking light, you can always tuck them away.
