Moisture meter?

I know a lot of things say stick your finger in the first few inches of soil to see if it's dry. Does anyone use the green moisture meter? If so what number do you use as a reference?

depends on how deeply you put into the pot. the first use, wait until you would normall using finger test.. what is the measurement on the device? That's a good point to use as a trigger. The loss of weight from the pot after an irrigation = drinking, mostl. So, that too is a great way to figure out a good moisture level as measured by your device. Depending on how deeply you put it, you'll get different readings even thought it's a good time to re-irrigate. Be consistent about it and you can skip this step in future. might want to do this procedure at least 1 time with any differently sized pot or anytime you change ingredients of your substrate, just to be safe. find your reference in hindsight using your normal methods. you can systematically adjust from that point if you want to try a faster or slower irrigation trigger.

Lift the pot with your hands. If it feels light, water it, if it feels heavy, don't water it. Meters aren't accurate. Maybe a expensive one is accurate, but the cheap 10 to 30 buck ones are useless.

I've always heard these things are junk and inaccurate. I can't speak on them. I never used one. I've always just misted my seedlings. Gave 2-300mls during first week or two after seedlings. Then I soak pots, and wait until 40-50% dry back. I lift the pot and when it's feel half as heavy as when it did when fully wet, then i water again. Hope this helps as it's what works for me. πŸ™
