Hi there.
I actually made some research on the subject, so bare witn me as i try to explain in a few words.
You will find amusing that even Darwin himself( with his son) made such experiments by playing different musical instruments to the plants. These experiments led nowhere so Darwin focused on more obvious reactions (ex. Phototropic movements).
Since then many people tried their luck with similar experiments but they lacked scientific value as the experiments could NOT be repeated or where not taking into account many variables.
SO the official stand of the scientific community was that NO, plants can NOT hear and they certainly are NOT affected by music.
BUT THEN 2017 came. A scientist made a crusial question. What is music? Music is sounds. And what is sound? Vibrations in a frequency.
So why would a plant need to hear? what needs can be attended by the ability to hear?
After a series of experiments dr. Monica Gagliano proved that plants can indentify the sound of water running in an undergroud water canal or pipe (without feeling the moisture). The roots actually pick up the vibrations and move to the direction of the water.
SO PLANTS CAN HEAR sounds that they evolved around for milions of years and are crusial for their survival. Music is quite new in this world if you think about it andit is not valuable for a plants survival.
These days people are experimenting with low and high frequency sounds and it seems that plants somewhat react to them.
So for now lets keep that plants CAN hear but as for a musical taste, i don't think so...
Ps. The gene responsible for the growth of the most delicate root hair structure that pick up the sounds in plants, is the same gene responsible for the growth of the small hair-like structures that pick up sounds in the human ear. So how about that.
