All of those leaves are contributing something, except for the nascent ones, and they'll be contributing within a few days. The plant will shed leaves that are useless. Let it suck it down to the point where very little effort is needed to pull the leaf off... to the point it could fall off with a stiff breeze. You have no congestion, so environmental reasons are not a cause to remove anything, either.
Leaves do more than photosnythesis and store things. They also take in CO2, which is the limiting factor more times than not unless you supplement CO2. If you do, even more reason not to remove a leaf. Transpiration is important. That is directly related to leaf surface area on the plant. Always have the midnset of keeping leaves. There should be a very good reason to remove one, not just OCD or herd-like behaviour/belieffs.
