Hey friend,
So these puncture/bite marks only make me think of a few pests. Grasshoppers, snail/slug, caterpillar/worms because of the bite marks i wouldn't think of any other pest....if you're able, try to examine the bottoms of any leaves and on the trunk to see if you see anything.
Otherwise if you only see activity in this one spot, is it possible a finger could have also done the damage? I know I'm usually suspect #1 when i find holes and chunks out of leaves with my clumsy hands and fingernails.
For bugs i always think having diamataceous earth around is a good idea because it will kill many varieties of bugs, its food grade (safe for pets etc), and it turns into a silica supplement for the plant. All you would do is dust the soil, the trunk...maybe some leaves and if a bug crosses it...boom outerbody broken down!
Otherwise i think caterpillars inch worms and cabbage loopers are all basically the same family and a nice BT spray works well. Good luck with the hunt, hopefully they'll be easy to spot. ✌️
