High nitrogen levels in soil can generally restrict plant senescence, particularly leaf senescence. There are many triggers for senescence. Senescence, or biological aging, is a normal and essential process in plants. It's a programmed decline in plant function, however, plants are unique in that they can also rejuvenate and form new organs(bud), making senescence part of a cycle of growth involving nutrient recycling.
