The mint taste in cannabis is caused by its terpene profile. Terpenes are aromatic molecules that give plants their smell and flavor, and different combinations create different taste impressions. In cannabis, a โ€œmintyโ€ or cooling flavor usually comes from a combination of terpenes, not from pure menthol itself. Small amounts of menthol-like terpenoids (such as eucalyptol / 1,8-cineole or pulegone), together with pinene and sometimes limonene, can create a fresh, mint- or eucalyptus-like character. These mint-associated terpenes are relatively rare and usually present in low concentrations, but they are very potent aromatically, so even trace amounts can noticeably influence the overall flavor.

Menthol: A terpene alcohol that produces the characteristic cooling sensation associated with peppermint. It is the main flavor compound in peppermint and is present in trace amounts in certain cannabis cultivars, such as those in the Kush family. Eucalyptol (also known as cineol): This terpene has a fresh, minty, and eucalyptus-like aroma. It's also found in herbs like rosemary and sage, and while typically in low levels in cannabis, it can be found in higher amounts in strains like 'Girl Scout Cookies (GSC)' and 'Dutch Treat'. Beta-phellandrene: Found primarily in the eucalyptus plant and known for a woody, minty flavor and aroma. Carvacrol: While more common in oregano and thyme, it is a secondary terpene that can appear in trace amounts in cannabis and contribute to a minty profile.

Limonene, alpha-pinene primarily. Eucalyptol, also known as cineole is found in some but very very low. Menthol but never found in more than trace amounts.
