The mint taste in cannabis is caused by its terpene profile. Terpenes are aromatic molecules that give plants their smell and flavor, and different combinations create different taste impressions.
In cannabis, a โmintyโ or cooling flavor usually comes from a combination of terpenes, not from pure menthol itself. Small amounts of menthol-like terpenoids (such as eucalyptol / 1,8-cineole or pulegone), together with pinene and sometimes limonene, can create a fresh, mint- or eucalyptus-like character. These mint-associated terpenes are relatively rare and usually present in low concentrations, but they are very potent aromatically, so even trace amounts can noticeably influence the overall flavor.
