Leaves are not sinks. Removing upper leaves does not increase photosynthetic potential. Part of how suger traverses the vascular tissue is due to concentration gradients - i.e. where it gets used the most has the greatest pull. Where sugars get used is based on apical dominance and not where the light hits. The sugars are highly mobile, so that is not an issue. You can shade a top cola and it will still be just as dense and substantial as all other top colas of equal stature/vertical height. seend it, done it, always consistently so. primary vs secondary+ branching matters too...
Remove a leaf if you thnk it will cause condensation and therefore be a risk of mold or other infection. If you have a specific and real reason, pruning a leaf off is fine. You can rationalize 'better safe than sorry' in some contexts. Defoliation, as in systematically removing large portions of the foliage, will never help the plant under any normal circumstances. The contexts in which it might help are completely avoidable. Simlpy don't overcrowd the canopy and you will never have to remove a bunch of leaves.
Leaves are incredibly important. One should not look for random reasons to remove them. It should be a rare need to remove more than 1 or 2 leaves at any point.
pruning off suckers at the bottom will reduce larf, but probably also reduces yield, slightly. An easier trime and larger proportions of buds might be a good reason to do it... this is something that nees to be proven properly, though. i try to prune off axilla that i think will develop into larf, but if good resesarch shows it has virtually no impact, i'll adjust and evolve with that new knowledge. I don't think it improves my yield, though.
Plus, you can do some cool stuff with the larf. Use that portion for bubble hash and it really won't impact yield of better buds unless it is an extreme amount. I'd argue it's probably better to err on the side of a could sets of lower branches producing less than ideal buds to ensure you don't cut off anything that would have produced proper buds. Just a hypothesis... something that would need to be tested no matter how good it sounds to the ear.
Life is messy and it's easy to attribute cause to the wrong effect, especially when motivated to do so (inherent bias).
Stick to 2-4 colas per sq ft and you should rarely have to remove a leaf and you wil get a decent amount of light penetration by default.
