MY FIRST GROW EVER. WHY Dutch Passion - Think Different? As a grow virgin, I was looking for a strain that was: - an easy grow (because I'm lazy), - resilient (will make many mistakes), - had high yields even in a newbie's hands. Forum after forum, I found that TD was a top choice for beginner growers like me. Also, Think Different was apparently a very pivotal strain within the history of Autoflowers(?)... Or so I read. WHAT IS THE SETUP? Soil (FFOF/HF) + Perlite (70/30). Layered with HF @ topsoil. OF @ bottom. 480w KingBrite LED + Cree Reds @ 60%. 4x2 tent, 3g fabric pots, 3 plants, same strain. All three 🌱🌱🌱 sprouted on May 1 or 2. NOOB GROWER THOUGHTS, GERM WK: I found out that if the seed keeps on floating despite 24 hrs of being soaked... I can do a gentle and light tap... This force should be enough for the seed to go BOTTOMS!

DAY 7 --- So far, so good. Yellow and Red are fine. Green's growth is a little behind the others. Could be a different pheno? Overwatered? Could just be slow growing? Who knows!? It's the seedling stage and it's anyone's guess. 🤣😝🌱 Happy growing to you all!! NOOB GROWER THOUGHTS, WEEK 1: Seedlings are fragile AF! LOL! Having said that I either over-watered GRN or the FFOF soil burned her w some K. I hope she doesn't stunt and pushes through. This strain is known to be resilent. Fingers crossed!

DAY 14 -- ♥️ RED is definitely on the lead. She's outgrown the tag. This could also be because she gets the most light as she is in the center of the tent. 💛 YLW is the "normal" sized one at day 14. Based on pics I've seen anyway. I'm gonna move her dead center of the tent and see if she catches up with RED in any way. 💚 GRN is stunted. Over watered on day 1 or hot soil issue... and she is paying the cost. She probably won't grow any wider than that and will be very stout. I will most likely not train this one in any way at all. About to enter the full on vegg stage. I will increase light gradually from 40% from to 60% and lessen humidity buy 5-8% or so. This is my first grow ever and I've already learned a lot in two weeks. 🌱🌱I'm pretty sure I will make many many more errors. Looking forward to learning from those as well. 🌱🌱 NOOB GROWER THOUGHTS, WEEK 2: COVID stay at home orders have made me a "helicopter plant parent." I find myself hovering on my girls without rhyme nor reason. At times, I catch myself just staring at them with bewilderment. Other times, I adjust the RH or temp or light just so I feel like I'm doing something... I guess this isn't abnormal for a new grower.. from what I've heard anyway. Any of you ever been helicopter parents before? Hehe!

🍒♥️ RED - D15 LST. Aggressive LST as she's grown the biggest. Planning to cut top leaf that was going to cover new growth and a bottom branch/growth that wasn't going to get any light based on the LST bend... But not sure yet.. 🍌💛 YLW - D17 LST. Normal LST on her than red. Just because of her smaller structure. Didn't want to go heavy until later as she grows more. 🍏💚 GRN - Mild LST as she got stunted early on as a seedling by some hot soil (FFOF, rookie mistake, never again). I was planning for 0 training on her for 0 stress. But a little won't hurt. 😅 Family photo is D20 with all other non-cannabis, indoor plants in the house. 🌿🌞🌱 NOOB GROWER THOUGHTS, WEEK 3: I am beginning to understand what people mean when they say "listen to your plant." All these 3 are the same genome but they are each very different... Different water needs. Different reactions to stressors. And etc. They are all the same genetics but are each their own unique snowflake. ❄️

DAY 24 -- You can only tuck leaves so much... And I did just that for the last few days or so. But the new growth was in the shadows so I went for some light defoliation of inner leaves only -- no more than 3-4 small inner leaves per plant. The girls are pretty low as I went a little hard on the LST... and early... There's hopefully another week or veg to go. We will see. D28 -- they bushed out. This should flower in the next week or two. Will continue to LST AND defo during transition. Will no longer update plant per plant as all three seem to be chugging along well and in full veg mode! NOOB GROWER THOUGHTS, WEEK 4 -- I just keep of fiddling with the girls more than I should. I wonder when this feeling will end!? This whole "I need to do something" to help... When really the best thing to do is to just let them go. Funny how that applies in real life and not just growing. Hmmm...

Pre-flower has started with possible signs showing on 2 of the 3 plants. Trained them one last time while still in transition. This will be my last major defoliation and LST before they fully bloom. I will (try) and leave them alone for a week+ to bloom before adding more stress -- (possibly) doing some lollipop for bottom air movement. I'm pretty sure I accidentally topped some of the many nodes in one or two of the plants. But at this point it really doesn't matter much. They are gonna grow like monsters regardless of any errors now. Getting my watering rhythm on point as well. Excited to see them flower fully and witness the "STRETCH" for the first time. NOOB GROWER THOUGHTS, WEEK 5 -- I have definitely been able to detach myself more from the plants. They are now mostly on automatic anyway. Lo and behold, the week I stop effing around with them... They finally bloom and reward me for my patience!

Made my own cheap SCROG netting. The girls are about to do their stretch. All 3 are flowering. Slowly removing fan leaves and any inner leaves covering floral growth. No more than 3-4 a day per plant. Slow and light. So far, so good... I think so anyway... What do I know... I'm a noob... If someone is still following this diary and sees something that I can improve or any advice at all... I'm all ears. Happy growing everyone!🌱🌿😎 NOOB GROWER THOUGHTS, WEEK 6 -- I'm getting paranoid with them being Hermie... I've seen too many diaries here go that way, including ones of these same exact genetics. No matter how much effort you put in, it's still really not up to you... Just gotta detach from the outcome while still trying my best -- both in growing and in life.

For a first time grower, the SCROG is definitely a bitch and a half... But worth it once you see 75-80% of your tent filled with buds, praying upwards to the light. Thankfully, they have slowed down vertically. So no more twice a day SCROG adjustments for a while --- hopefully anyway. I'm having a hard time with lowering RH. Although a fellow grower has suggested not to worry with RH as long as you apply BT bacteria... True? Any advice on RH management on late flower stage for a noob? I'm always willing to learn! Happy growing everyone! May your plants be merry and happy! 🌿 🌱 😎 NOOB GROWER THOUGHTS, WEEK 7 -- GrowDiaries along with other online forums on growing are filled with helpful individuals who are generous with their time. But maaan, sometimes you really come across people who take this shit waaaay too seriously. Lol! Reddit, here, autoflower network... Everywhere! I suppose that's true in any community. You will always have people of that same ilk. Just funny... I thought wine snobs were bad... GrowSnobs are worse!!!! Have you ever encountered a GrowSnob?

Noticed some wind burn 🍃 🔥 on the plant/leaves closest to the fan. Moved it and accidentally hurt the plant again. SCROG-adjustments-woes! UGGGH! Lesson learned... Once scrogged... Tough to readjust! Be extra careful. The red hairs 🌹 are showing up with some already leaning and wilting down. Really excited for them to fruit! 🍓 I am definitely growing at least two phenotypes of TD. One that is meant to be very tall and w very thinned out long leaves -- heavily sativa. And one that is the "more common" pheno. I now understand what this whole pheno-hunting term means. NOOB GROWER THOUGHTS, WEEK 8 -- This grow isn't even done and I am already thinking of my next. I've definitely bought too many seeds. And my grow space is waaay too limited. I will expand once I move to a new place.. and already have a plan for an eternal harvest. More tents 🎪, more seeds 🌱, more everything ... It's official, folks... I'm addicted to growing! And I love it!!! 😎

Grow Questions

I'm wanting to harvest the earliest possible -- long story, time constraints. Question: seeing my plants now, what's the earliest I can harvest without sacrificing too much potency? I know early harvest means more head high, later means couch lock. I'm okay with that trade off.

RH was constantly above 60. And I am averse to buying a dehumidifier for such a small grow space. Went ahead and defoliated bottom leaves a bit. And opened up the canopy a bit more for light and air to pass through. The photos say it all. Thinking about removing the SCROG -- 1) too complex to remove runoff w it on. 2) any adjustments w the plants location/rotation requires so much extra work just because it's on. Either way, I don't think I'll be using a SCROG for my next grow. We will see. Will add more photos and weekly thoughts later. Happy growing everyone! I hope your plants are merry! 😎🌱

DAY 70! Wow I made it through my first 10 weeks without killing any of my girls! That in and of itself is an accomplishment for me! The phenotype that grew really fast (RED) has fox-tailed. I see that this is common among TD strains that sway this way. It's going to be an extra pain trimming these... Just for airy buds. Oh well! Noob-grower blues! The normal (YLW) and slow (GRN) girls are actually fattening up. And their buds seems to be very sense. Or at least compared to the fast growing one. Excited for my next grow. These girls can probably use another 2-3 weeks at least before chop. We shall see.

The FLUSH has began... Only feeding pH water and nothing else. Some leaves have already started their fade. I almost feel like I have three different phenos of TD -- A heavy sativa one that's waaaay too branchy and is prone to foxtailing -- according to Reddit and other journals. I have two "normal" ones with one turning purple and the other staying at that light orange hue. Might shift in these last two weeks though. They all smell like citrus but have distinct tones to each of them. It's gonna be an interesting diversity in smoke too right? Or will it be the same for all three despite the phenotype being different? Noob questions :) Happy growing fellow farmers! 😎🌱

I was first sad that I had to harvest all three girls at different times if I wanted my trich levels almost equal on all three. But then I realized that if I harvest them on the same day(ish) -- ♥️ RED -- grew the fastest and has the most amber. She will be a "later" harvest and will give me that couch lock high. 💚 GRN -- was a late bloomer due to minor stunting. She will be the "early" one with least amber-developed trichs, giving me more of that head high. 💛 YLW -- will (hopefully) be a balance of both since it will be the "on time" harvest since it's had the most "normal" growth. So, instead of being sad... I am now quite happy on the diversity of smoke I'm going to get. Silver lining all the way! A note on Dutch Passion Autos -- I am thankful that the elongated grow season with these genetics gives more time for the plant to heal from the multiple errors newbies such as myself make. I now realize a grow season of 13-16 weeks for an auto is considered too long, by today's standards. Now that I have some grow experience, I might not be too keen on growing 16 week autos again... In my next grow, I am hoping it doesn't take that long. Fingers crossed! Sending good vibes to all growers and plants out there. Wishing you all a happy growth and an even happier smoke!

FIRST HARVEST BEGINS! WEIGHT REPORT, after 8 days quick dry -- ♥️ RED had 59g - Expected more but she was the fox-tailed one. So, it's not surprising as she is airy AF. 💚 GRN had 72g -- this is more what I expected, about an 2.5 bags per plant. She was stunted and slow growing though. 💛 YLW had a whopping 81 grams. That's more like it! Expected as she was the "normal" growth one! Larf, popcorn, bottom buds were ~20 grams. Did not add this to final weight. Should I? Still not as much as other Think Different harvests I've seen. But not bad for a noob like me! I think these are high yielding genetics as a whole too. I don't know if next grow will yield this much. Smoke report. Additional comments. More pics to come later.

@Vincent_Van_Grogh, No, never heard of it, but I don't rule out that it's possible, you always discover a lot of new things. However, if the area where you grow already has good ventilation, 50-55% humidity is good and you have no problems with mold (this is the average humidity I keep in flowering) 🤘

They’re looking great! Watching something grow into something from nothing is exciting to me. Just knowing what they’re growing into increases the excitement and anticipation for me. Enjoy it, I do! I saw a comment from another grower on someone else’s diary the other day that I believe hit this notion on the head. The grower wrote, “Smoking weed May not be addictive, but growing it is.” I was hit by the truth in that statement as it reflects my own ideas and thoughts. Beware you may get addicted to growing too. 😎 Good luck, and happy growing!
Vincent_Van_Grogh
Vincent_Van_Groghcommented4 years ago
@The_Good_Twin,that's makes sense man! Yeah, so even if it's in this range.. as long as there is air movement I should be good. Will add additional oscillating fan and turn up intake to ensure air is in and out quickly. As long as I see most leaves rustle regularly I should be good then (?)... Whew! *Wipes forehead from relief*

The_Good_Twincommented4 years ago
@Vincent_Van_Grogh, An RH of 52-55% should be alright. The research I’ve done says that a RH of 65 to 62 is best for drying once you’ve harvested, and that a RH of 52-55 should be dry enough to prevent most molds from appearing. I live in a climate where my own RH never gets above 55%, but generally hangs around 38-55% depending on the outside weather. In my own opinion, 52-55% RH should be fine to prevent mold from forming. I’m NO expert, but from what I’ve read, you should be fine.

Hi there! Looking nice. Would it be possible to upload a pic without the grow light on? The veins on the leaves of "RED" look a little bit concerning to me. I'm still a noob, but the disparity in colour between the veins and the leaf itself makes me think you are missing magnesium, but it could also just be the light. In my experience and from reading a bunch of diaries, Mg deficiency doesn't tend to appear so early, more like week 4-5-6, so it's a bit of a strange look. If you could get some snaps with the light off it will give a better idea of the plant's health. Looking great and wishing you the best of luck for the next stage. I can't wait to see these ladies stretch out, if this is your first grow you'll be in for a treat! EDIT: On closer inspection I'm pretty sure it's just the light. I opened full size image and could see clearer, looks perfectly healthy so ignore my comment - except for the good wishes :)

@Vincent_Van_Grogh, I'd probably wait another week or so. You'll notice a bit more of the same growth rate for next 7ish days, and then the plant will begin to stretch, growing as much as 1 inch per day!! Thats a good time to start defol as you'll have a better idea of where the budsites are, and therefore what you need to defol for light penetration! Rule of thumb for me, with autos at least, is not to take more than 4 leaves at a time, and I try to leave 48 hours between clippings. Others go a lot harder than that, but autoflowers are delicate creatures so I tend to err on the side of caution - with everything, defol, nutes, training.

@GreenHillZone, Day 20 w these ladies. Too early to light defoliation?

@Vincent_Van_Grogh, hey, my pleasure! Take all my advice with some salt, I'm still learning too! With regards to deficiencies in general, I don't think there are any you need to worry about for the first 4 weeks or so. There is enough nutrition for the seedling/veg stage in the seed itself, as well as the soil medium. In my experience week 4/5 is when defs begin to show their signs, so if you can be ahead of the curve a bit and apply amendments in the previous weeks you can start to move towards "optimal" growth. I think this instinct will only come with experience, growing different strains in different conditions and working on your "green thumb"! On the red stems/mag def side, that is a sign as far as I'm aware but as above, not in the first few weeks. Late veg/early bloom stage in the case of autoflowers which is all I've grown so far. For instance, my current 7 day old seedling has a red stem but I don't think we can say that's down to a deficiency. Calcium and magnesium are closely linked in their uptake within the plant, as far as I know, and often people have calcium defs which lead to magnesium lockout. Depending on your water source you may have a decent calcium content anyway, so mag defs are less likely to occur in the course of a grow. Soil does tend to be more forgiving on the nutrient side of things as far as I know, but definitely use a light hand with nutes early on. You can always add more, but you can't take it away very easily. Good luck with the grows and thanks for the kind words!

@Vincent_Van_Grogh, Unfortunately, I didn't keep any diary for that grow. In fact, I didn't document a single thing from that grow except the yield. Got 246 grams out of two plants.

@Vincent_Van_Grogh, Luckely it was only last days. But the drying proces is pretty slow 2 for now. And ive got unwanted visitors installing new counters for gas and electricity, so i had to abort the bloom a bit early.🙄 🙏🌿🌿🌿🙏

@Organic_LarF, good point! Hehe! Outside air is definitely a little less humid. So intake is good! Hehe! Yeah, those are pics for master growers and their fat buds of this strain. I'm a noob... I can only hope! Thanks again for the time! Hope the kids are learning a lot a you teach them the green thumb ways!
