Hello fellow growers from around the world! I hope everyone had an outstanding week and made a ton of progress in the garden! It’s is the beginning of week 5- let’s get into a little recap of the action that took place over the last seven days.
As you know, I accidentally had the taproot incident- “the great taproot massacre of 2021” sounds like an exaggeration, but trust me- if you were directly responsible for that kind of unintentional destruction…. It felt like a massacre..
Anyways I swore up and down no training or tinkering as I have already slowed down these autos a great deal and we are working against the clock…
****for anyone new, I would just like to point out- that had this been a photoperiod plant, I would’ve been a bit bummed that I did it, but all in all wouldn’t sweat it too much and would plan on vegging a bit longer and all would be good and fine- the thing with autos, they are going to veg for a predetermined amount of time and automatically (without flipping light schedule) begin to flower- now if you stunt them in the beginning, you are really hurting you end yield and that is unfortunately what I did****
So I certainly intended on leaving these plants alone as far as training is concerned- but there was one SLIGHT problem… I have a lot of fun training the plants and seeing how different methods either by themselves or in combination with others will affect the plant and also lack a bit of self control- sooooo…. Yes. Yes I did get in there a little bit, JUST a little though…
What did I do you ask? Well- I was REALLY trying to be good… so honestly, I went in there and did as little as possible (for me, someone who REALLY likes to get in there..) all I did was lst 5 of the 6 fastbuds plants we have going-
Why not all 6? Well, one of the strawberry pie plants has been growing very odd- it seems to be a bit slower, it MAY have topped itself- that is something I have never come across until possibly now… on more than one occasion I have thought of culling it but then I remember- the whole reason I keep these journals is to take note of what I am seeing and experiencing every step of the way through these grows- and learn. Learn new techniques, learn from past mistakes, learn from observing and learn from actually diving in and doing- learning by growing and how can I learn about how that plant will act if I cull plants at the first site of something I deem as “odd”
Now down the road it might be a different matter where I have experienced it, I know for a fact the outcome of which I can expect and then from there make an educated decision but right now it would just be a guess and I wouldn’t know definitively what would happen next and how it would grow out.
I’m not a betting man, but if I had to hypothesize, I would say this one will of course be a lower yielder but hopefully I will still get to play a bit since it appears to have topped itself- it’s been really interesting- so far the strawberry pie had the tallest and the smallest seedlings- both of the gorilla cookies plants have been neck and neck as far as height and growth with the taller strawberry pie plant and the forbidden runtz have been a happy medium this whole time- they were doing well from the get go and are still doing well- not the tallest but also not showing any signs of anything that I would be at all concerned about- they are keeping up very well and have been the most consistent out of what I have planted of those three strains.
After bending these plants over, I had a couple fan leaves pointing up towards the sky covering a couple potential bud sites (future bud sites at least) so I removed those to help that light get to where it needs to go.
Now I’m kind of playing the waiting game- I suspect that I will have some trouble leaving them alone now that I broke the ice and did my first tie down- I am hoping I still have a bit more time with them… I would like to train them out just a bit more before they start to flower.
One issue that I will run into that considering everything, is really a non issue (for everyone else)….is my ocd- I would say I just get hung up on a few things here and there but one generally wouldn’t notice unless we played pool and I was racking the balls or something. This situation also included- I have been known to get a bit meticulous with the training and it’s difficult to do at the point (taproot massacre 2021 poor one out for the homies 😔) so I think something that might get to me is the shape that they end up- I won’t have enough time to give them that super even nice canopy so it will basically be doing it’s own thing with just a little bit of influence from me.
Hindsight being 20/20- I could’ve just left them but you know…. Could’ve, should’ve, would’ve….. but I didn’t….so now we will go wherever the wind (or whatever) takes us! I am so stoked as these plants get bigger to really see them express themselves in different ways- and separate themselves from the heard that they currently reside.
