Germination
I'm doing all sativa-dominant this time, think I've had enough of indicas for a while, don't want to be sedated! There are a few, but haven't had many that made me feel energised, motivated or creative, so I'm open to suggestions. My preferred method of germination is planting the seed about 3 mm into a jiffy plug with the pointed end facing up and round end facing down, so the root grows upwards out of the pointed end before doing a 180 degree u-turn downwards, then as the seedling grows upwards it naturally pulls itself out of the husk, leaving the husk in the soil with the delicate Cotyledon leaves in tact and free of husk. It's a tried and trusted method with a high success rate. I used to do the paper towel thing, but can't trust myself not to break the tap root when planting, or remind myself of the time when the courier arrived and I forgot I'd left the germinated seeds on the tissue, exposed to air.

Not much to say about these - it's the boring, slow stage, but they look fine. The Blue Dream Haze has wider leaves than the rest, suggesting Indica traits, but hoping that's not the case.

These were topped the previous week after the third node. I was hoping to save some money by keeping them under the same LED as my auto, because energy costs in UK are crazy in 2022, but they started looking deficient, so put them back under the T5s and now they look fine, although maybe had a little too much N.

These were topped a second time after the third node of each branch, except the Blue Dream Haze, which I messed up and cut one of the branches after second node. The Ghost Train Haze was suffering and needed to be transplanted quickly, but the roots are still looking very healthy, so it should perk up soon. Today they were transplanted to the GreenSmart pots in the main tent.

These had liquid aminos in 1L of water three days ago and kelp in 2L of water today, both times foliar and root fed. The base tanks of the self-watering pots have not yet been filled, but as the top two inches were feeling a little dry before today's watering I will quarter-fill tanks tomorrow.

The Ghost Train Haze was looking a bit pale, but after a week in bloom it's now greening up, probably due to DLI.

Forgot to mention I took three cuttings from each of these just over a week ago. Only one AK-47 has rooted so far. One wilted, so put it in a glass of water to revive.

All looking healthy now. Most of the foliage below the canopy was removed and used as mulch. I only need one more cutting to root - the Sour D x Key Lime Pie doesn't seem to want to and has the weakest branches, not much of an aroma to it yet, but a great looking plant. The AK-47 had the thinnest, weakest looking root system, but was the first to root and is the most solid, vigorous and least temperamental plant of the lot. Surprisingly, it doesn't smell of much yet, but I heard it's a real stinker in full bloom. The Ghost Train Haze is the stretchiest and has a lovely faint smell I cannot describe yet, maybe sandalwood and pine. The Blue Dream Haze already smells faintly of blueberries, also a very vigorous, healthy looking plant. All foliar fed with Green Hand Organic Synergist at 2.5ml per Litre a few days ago, but will not be foliar feeding again. The light had to be raised slightly to accommodate the stretch, but that's as high as it will go and is still on its lowest dim setting at 198w. I will start increasing brightness near end of week three.

Green Hand Organic - Seabird Guano 1.6 mll
End of week three in flower. Seabird Guano & Fulvic added to soil last week, then just watered from the base tanks with some BAM. The lights are turned up to almost full power, just dimmed slightly (about 5%) to reduce hot spots. The AK-47 is the only one with buds that are already stacking and is the only one that still doesn't smell yet, but no doubt the stink is coming. Blue Dream Haze has a lovely blueberry smell, Ghost Train Haze is the stretchiest, with classic haze smell and something herbal, and Sour D x Key Lime Pie smells ever so slightly of lime.

Not too impressed with Cali Connections so far - seeing male flowers on top of half the buds. I grew their Alien OG before and that hermied too, while none of the other cultivars growing alongside did, suggesting it's not something I caused, but this is a S1, so I suppose it's to be expected to some degree. The plant doesn't look like a sativa-dominant one, with broad Indica type leaves, but it does look how it's supposed to look in comparison with other diaries. It smells very nicely of blueberry, but not any hint of Haze at all.

End of week six. Quite a few of the upper fan leaves turned crispy around the edges, not sure what caused it, possibly a combination of too much light, too much water due to having to fill the base tanks before going on holiday and kelp added too late, causing K deficiency. It still looks like it will be a fairly decent haul. I'm not growing the Blue Dream Haze again and unlikely I'll grow any Cali Connection strains again (I still have a Chem '91 seed, but probably not worth the risk). Not even sure it is a Haze, most of the pistils have turned brown already, calyxes are looking fully swollen and some trichomes are turning amber, much sooner than expected, maybe due to it being a hermie (like the Alien OG I grew), but haven't seen any pollen released. The Sour D x Key Lime Pie smells best, a bit like ZCube, yields will likely be poor, but quality beats quantity. AK-47 has the biggest, best looking buds so far, but the aroma is hard to describe. Ghost Train Haze upper leaves have faded a lot - light burn perhaps, with it being closer to the LED, smells like classic Haze and fresh lime.

Great grow!! I do suggest you making hole around the pot, so the roots become more oxygenated, it's very important!!! Wish you a great grow! Have a shroom11!!!11 🙌

@Psilocubensis, thanks man. The pots are specially designed self-watering GreenSmart pots and they do have small holes around the sides. 👍

@Sybarite, cool, I'll follow along. Both AK-47 and GTH are amazing. Check my Somali Ghost Train diary, if you like. It's not like anything else I've ever grown before!
Sybarite
Sybaritecommented3 years ago
@Shijo_Kingo, Thank you. No, I'm not too worried. I left them in the small pots for too long (I'm on a tight schedule), so they got excessively root-bound. They are perking up now since the transplant, plus a few yellowing lower leaves in veg rarely causes any issues during bloom. I will probably be removing some of the lower fan leaves eventually anyway to improve air circulation and prevent mildew.
