Starting this one back in late Feb, but ran into a lot of trouble with my anxiety meds over the past few months and the diaries had to go on haitus. Still feeling pretty shitty but well enough to start documenting again at least, so 8 weeks are missing.
I tried a new germ method using a hydrogen peroxide mixture, and wow she popped in 24 hours and was planted on the end of day 2. For the curious:
1 part H2O2 to 5 parts water for 12 hours.
Planted the seed on day 2 and here we are a week later. Nice looking seedling that didn't overstretch.
Ingredients above were mixed at low rates and watered in with lactobacillus and EM1.
Seed Starting Soil
10% Worm Castings
45% Fox Farm Ocean Forest
45% Rice Hulls
Crab and Lobster Meal
Kelp Meal
Basalt Rock Dust
Gypsum
Oyster Shell Flour
As previously mentioned, lots of missing time unfortunately so here is a quick run down:
Solo cup growth was a bit small but I let her live in it for 3 weeks before transplant.
Transplants went off without any issues, added some mycorrhizae to the roots of course. Watered in well with 10ml EM1, LAB
Added 2 gallons to the reservoirs week 4
Did a top dress on week 5 with the following ingredients, essentially a Coot's mix with some extras. (Google Clackamas Coot if you're curious)
1/3 cup kelp meal, lobster meal, malted barley, karanja cake
1/2 cup basalt,
1/3 cup gypsum, Oyster Shell flower, bokashi, All Purpose
4 cups seaweed compost / watered in with 1/3rd gallon water and 10ml EM1, LAB,
All trimming are put back on top of the soil to decompose.
Doing some actual training this time and decided to go with a Nebula manifold for 8 tops.
Over the next few weeks, the large fan leaves were cut off to give light to the new tops and used a scrog to spread out the branching. It has since been removed, but will be re-added in flower.
I have a CO2 meter now and I was thrilled to find it sits around 550 ambient which is more than enough for veg. Light has been set at a height to allow 700PPFD (using Photone app on Android to measure) until the flip, possibly this Sunday.
I'm using the same soil from my previous grow so the soil life has had time to thrive, worms have multiplied and the microscope shows a lot of good activity.
She has strong smelling resin (more so than the Aurora) already and my hands are super sticky/waxy after trimmings and she's still in veg.
Overall much longer branching than the Aurora, with a thinner stalk. I'm pretty sure the purple stems are from the genetics and not a nutrient deficiency. Same ingredients as the other Earthbox, but I suppose she could be more demanding for P or K.....still I'm going with genetics.
Big pre-flower feed last week on Sunday (they had not been fed in 5 weeks). Soil levels had dropped a bit since last grow and the top of the soil was full of worm castings from those hungry little bastards. So I added some more soil with the feed:
2 gallons Fox Farm Happy Frog,
2 cups seaweed compost, rice hulls
1/3 cup kelp meal, lobster meal, malted barley, karanja cake, gypsum, oyster shell flower, Power Bloom
1/2 cup basalt, bokashi
Water in with 1/3rd gallon water / 10ml FFJ, EM1, Lacto, 110ml coconut water, 8ml fish hydro, 8ml liquid seaweed
Lots of stretch already as you can see by the SCROG net that was put in last Sunday. Pistils are starting to show and overall health is looking good. She's drinking 2 gallons of water every 4 days or so, and due to her size, I'm expecting that to increase. Going to do a big leaf strip in a 1.5-2 weeks as I've seen some grows have insane bud growth afterwards.
Lots of worms and soil mites scurrying around when I lift the mulch cover. No microscopy this week due to the new soil on top, maybe the next week or the following.
Major stretching this week for an indica dominant plant(it's completely dwarfing the Aurora), and I had to raise the light several times. I can't raise it anymore so I'm either going to have to raise the scrog, put in another one, or do some super cropping. Good flower development but very long node spacing, this is easily the most vigorous plant I've grown; turgor is crazy good. Most of the tops are keeping up with each other so I should have a nice even canopy when she's done the stretch.
Nothing but water this week. Big defoliation coming next week.
I think she's finally starting to slow down in stretch, and good thing too because after the buds start fattening I'll have just enough light distance. She is starting to turn purple around the bud sites(and there are sooo many), slowly but surely and the trichomes have started to appear. Did a major defoliation and took off most of the large fan leaves, most bud sites that were below the SCROG and some shorter branches. Small feed to help her through the trauma with some microbes, fish barley and bokashi. Also hung up the sugar/yeast/water CO2 generators.
Turgor is crazy just a day after the trim, they're praying hard.
Cannabis genetics are so varied...just look at difference between the Aurora and the GMP in the second last pic. Same food, same soil, same watering, same environment, just different genetics.
She's recovered pretty well from the big trim, only looks a few days behind from my previous grow but that could just be genetics. No feeder roots on top of the medium yet so she's got plenty to eat, the worms pretty much destroyed last weeks feeding. I'm growing some fungal compost tea inoculant that should be ready in a few days, it's already got a nice fuzz going. I'll post microscopic activity in next weeks entry.
Smell is really starting to come in, classic weed fruity so far with some nice resin.
Compost tea turned out well, let it go for 26 hours total and geared it towards fungal. Also took some soil samples several days later around the stalks and found a lot of nematodes and protozoa which is what you want to see. Lots of different types of nematodes so what your looking for are the bacterial feeders (there are charts online that show you how to identify them). Mycorrhizae can be identified by it's dark colour, uniformity and segmented nature. Testate amoebas live in a translucent shell like a snail and are easy to spot but hard to spot moving due to my shitty microscope, but look for the tentacles. Also found some eggs with movement inside, no idea what they are but they have vacuoles and flagella.
She is really getting sticky and smelly now; berries with herb notes. You can see the resin stretching over the trichomes in the last pic.
No signs of senescence yet so I'm not going to feed them, they should have plenty of food anyway as this is a second run of the same soil.
Last feeding with 2/3rds cup Bokashi and malted barely, watered in with water/FFJ. Buds are starting to buff up (needed to start adding some plant yo-yos) and look like their going to foxtail at the base a bit. Loving the fat shroom heads on the trichomes of this cultivar, resin-rails are starting to pronounce themselves.
No signs of senescence yet, she may end up going 10 weeks.
Trying out a new addition to my nutrient regimen, called Mykrobs. It has 4 types of rhyzobacteria, myco, and trichoderma, is OMRI cert; basically like Recharge. Since I reuse my soil I thought I would start watering some in before my next grow. Buds are still fattening and should start the ripening process this week, still no signs of senescence so there's plenty of food in the soil. A few amber trichomes here and there but a lot of semi-clear as well, she's supposed to go 9 weeks but I might stretch it out to 10 to harvest at the same time as the Aurora. Loving the purple, almost burgundy buds.
No food this week, just de-chlorinated water. Seeing a lot less new calyx and finally starting to see some senescence so she gets at least 1 more week, maybe 2 judging by the trichomes. Not much to report besides the extra weight she's putting on; all the lowers look like little purple Xmas trees=) Stems are holding up for the most part outside of the ones where I used plant yo-yos.
Been getting hotter so I hope I don't lose too many turps=/
Done and chopped. Buds are really dense, sticky and smell of herb and fruit. Even the lower buds a pretty reasonable sized chunks, so we'll see how the drying goes. Pretty sure I'm going to break my record for weight on a single plant with this one;)
Well shit, I shattered my record for dried harvest on a single plant at 9.3 ounces. After drying, the buds are just coated in trichomes, smell like sweet candy and fruit with a little chocolate mixed it. Not very resinous though, so I think I'll add a resin generating nutrient next round. I also didn't use as much FFJ as I wanted to test 'less is more' and while the she was super healthy and huge, not as much resin. I will def be changing my trimming habits to remove more of the lower branches that don't make it to at least a foot below the canopy.
