3/9/24 - After losing it on the carpet for about ten minutes, I placed the seed in the moist paper towel and placed it between two glass plates at 9 p.m. Malph named it Pluto.
3/10/24 - 24 hours later and I see a sliver of taproot poking through. Put a little more water on the paper towels, back in the plates and on top of the fridge.
3/11/24 - I finished getting the tent set up, filled the bucket with tap water and got the ph just a shade under 6. Decided against nutrients for this week but will definitely be adding them at 1/4 strength at next week’s reservoir change. Then I vertically sliced open a rapid rooter and carefully placed the seed inside and placed it in the clay. Going to give it a bit of light tonight and begin the 18 hour light cycle tomorrow.
3/16/24 - We are progressing nicely! I had to add a little water the other day, still no nutrients. After reading a bit more into my new light I decided to dim it to 25% and put it 12 inches from the seedling.
3/17/24 - Malph and I just did a reservoir change, filling the 5 gallon buckets with 4 gallons of water to just get to the bottom of the mesh pot. The water is mixed with the General Hydroponics FloraSeries nutrients at 25% strength along with CaliMagic and Hydroguard at full strength. The PH is just slightly under 6. Added a small humidifier to the setup as well as a 20”x20” wooden board to keep everything stable at the bottom of the tent. So far heat in the tent has been great but the humidity is low for this stage of development. Onward!
3/27/24 - Shortly after the last reservoir change, the first set of leaves started yellowing pretty bad. I couldn’t determine if it was nute burn or light burn, so on 3/20 we did another reservoir change with all nutrients set to 1/4 tsp per gallon and moved the lights to 18 inches. The plant quickly rebounded and is now growing fast. I decided to abandon using CaliMagic for the rest of this grow and just stick to the FloraTrio and Hydroguard.
Today we changed the reservoir again and set the nutrients to 1/2 tsp per gallon and the ph is about 5.7. The little humidifier is keeping the tent at about 50% and I have been intermittently using my little space heater (outside of the tent of course) to mitigate the last of the cold weather from winter. I also increased the dimmer from 25% to 75%. Hoping the next few weeks will be nice and steady before the hotter weather presents a new set of challenges.
4/4/24 - Pretty good week of growth after I stopped scorching her with the light. I moved the light up to 24” and decreased the dimmer to 50% strength. Beginning to get a peppery smell but only when the tent is open. Probably going to go full strength on the nutrients for Sunday’s reservoir change. The 6th node is just appearing now and I will top the plant once it is ready. I finally think I have a handle on managing the ppm and EC and now have a meter that will constantly monitor it. The roots have exploded over the past few days. Haven’t had to add any water over the course of the week, that’ll probably change soon.
4/11/24 - There were a few slow days of growth right after topping but she looks to have bounced back strong. Don’t love the yellowing tips of the leaves but I’m not too sure on what could be causing it. PH has been sitting at 5.8 and hasn’t moved in days. Going to start keeping the reservoir at around 3.5 gallons to give the roots some space before reaching into the solution.
4/18/24 - I topped both sides of the plant above the third node and removed everything from the second node. She’s getting bigger each day now. Next reservoir change I will go up to full strength nutrients and will keep the reservoir at about 3.5 gallons from now on.
Finally got my tie mounts and tied down all the branches. I also removed a few of the bigger fan leaves for better light penetration. I broke one of the colas while attempting to LST and just topped where it broke.
5/30/24 - Getting really big and refuses to be tied down at this point. Been using frozen 1L water bottles to lower the substrate temp; seems to top out around 72°F and the ice brings it down to 60°F within 40 minutes. Been smooth sailing otherwise. Probably going to clean up some undergrowth after looking at the last picture 😅
6/6/24 - Big defoliation a few days ago. I’m hoping she doesn’t get much taller because my light is the highest it can go, currently 18 inches above the canopy. Might need to find a different way to tie branches down next time, these adhesive strips are not doing the job.
6/20/24 - Some of the upper fan leaves starting showing signs of light burn so I wound up dimming the lights approximately 5-10%. Buds are starting to fatten up! I cannot seem to get the nighttime humidity to go lower than 55-60%. The current heatwave is keeping the daytime humidity at about 50%. I just got a digital microscope so trichome pics incoming.
6/27/24 - Everything going quite smoothly. Light burn is unsightly and annoying but the buds seem unfazed. Probably altering the nutrient ratios again for the next res change. Probably about 3 weeks from the chop as of now
7/3/24 - Down the home stretch. Fighting the urge to cut the crispy leaves off. Other than that, everything is going well. It’s tough to get a nice shot at the trichomes with this handheld microscope, but it looks like there is a good mix of clear and cloudy right now.
@Hattiwatti, Thanks! I’m glad you said this, because I searched my old grow supplies and found that I actually do have one. I’m going to have to do some research though because I have never used one of these. But now I know my tap water is 174 ppm and EC is 348 haha
hey, looks like you gave her too much fertilizer. It would be better to start with an EC of 0.6-0.8. I made the same mistake with 4/5 of my plants and lost a lot of growth.
