She is showing some preflowers at this point. Everything going smoothly. I think the LST so far has done it’s job keeping a relatively even canopy. No issues at all, look forward to seeing how this one turns out. Growth should really start taking off at this point. Started with a light feeding regimen as well.

Grow Questions

Uh oh, I was just checking my plants today and I noticed one or two little worm lookin things. They look like thrips from all the stuff I’ve seen. There isn’t many maybe 10 that I saw and removed myself. Now that my plant is going into full flower I’m not really sure what to do.

HI @Justnblaze! Sorry to hear this... Regarding pests/worms/bugs, prevention is the key. Pest prevention is an essential topic, you need a pest-prevention-strategy as soon as you plant your seedlings, during the first days. My strategy is pretty simple and consists in 3 methods: 1) I have a mister working 20min every hour to diffuse essential oils mixed with fresh water (a few drops of lemongrass, lavender, peppermint...you can find those oils in nature-stores or online). Those oils are repelling insects/pests, they don't like the smell of my room. 2) I spray neem-oil almost everyday during the veg stage when the light turns off, 10-12 drops of pure neem-oil mixed in a liter of temperated water, this oil is really efficient to kill/disturb/sterilize the invaders. 3) I use a dedicated foliar spray (BioBizz LeafCoat) once every 2 weeks to create a 'transparent layer' onto the leaves and to protect them from spiders/thrips/moths/miners... Since I've applied this approach, I've seen ZERO invader in my room, and believe my it was a big problem in the past. Now that your plants are flowering, you should avoid spraying any chemicals/pesticides, even neem-oil could ruin your final product, so here are 3 things you can do, 1/ spraying pure RO water at night (but be warned this can lead to bud-rot if over-done) and 2/ use a sponge to wash your leaves with neem-oil (mixed in water with a bit of soap), this solution will glue to the leaves and repel the thrips, 3/ Get some ladybugs, they love to eat thrips and other tiny indaders, and aren't offensive for your plants. I hope this will help, keep us up-to-date and happy growing 👊

Any opinions on a dark period before harvest? Worth doing? If so how long—24/48/72 hours? Anyone notice any difference or benefit from having it before the chop?

hey Justnblaze, dark period is important why? well three reasons, first of all after a dark period of 12hrs or less the plant has less photosynthesis chemicals in it which means the "cure will be better", aka a smoother better smoke. Second THC and terpenes actually get degraded by light so what happens when the lights come on the teprs and thc get burnt off so a dark period at the end allows the plant to "catch up" and get that flavour and strength in there. Getting strong weed is 50% growing and 50% curing, THC also comes from the cure actually ! a dark period of 12-24hrs helps, in fact you should chop and dry in the dark too, because once you chop the cure starts and light is the enemy of the cure. So the difference is a better, fuller taste and a stronger more potent smoke. Anything above 24hrs of dark and the trychomes start degrading though. hope this helps ! 🚀

Thanks everyone. Going to try the bio way first!

@HighTV, sweet going to give the been oil a go. Thanks for all the advice hopefully it’s early enough to not be such an issue. For preventative measures in the future do you ever just spray it down while vegging even if there’s no sign of pests?

@Justnblaze, What I said DOES go both ways read up before following any advice! 😎 I think its fair to say that Neem oil is the safest solution. Neem oil doesn't destroy the flavor like you may be thinking. Its very easy to use Neem Oil and not have your flavor effected as long as you give it time before harvest. The most important thing is to kill the Pests and kill them now. Spray the Neem oil over the plant (Trust me its ok) once daily for 3-5 days. This will kill the pests and not hurt your plant! Then you just finish your grow normally pest free! =)

@HighTV, I’ve decided to go with cold press neem oil instead. Hopefully it’s got what I need. My plants relatively small enough so instead of spraying I was thinking perhaps manually applying with a damp paper towel to avoid any budsites being heavily sprayed, any thoughts on that? I don’t want to compromise the flavor if possible but would prefer to get rid of them no matter what.

So day 2 and relatively no sign of the thrips maybe one or two that I simply wiped off the leaf. It’s a bit odd I thought they’d really take over like mites do lightning quick. The oil arrives tomorrow. But for now she still looks healthy and relatively unscathed by the little bastards minus a spot or two where they sucked some sap.

I just want to thank everyone for being so helpful. First I’m going to try topical cold press neem oil. If that doesn’t work I’ll go to bio route and try the nematodes. So far I’ve just been routinely checking in and removing any visible signs of them. Pretty much find one or two every 6 hours then no signs of them. Lol I may be the best pesticide for the plant. I’m pretty bummed I got them in there at all. Everything went so smoothly last run. Eh chalk it up to a learning experience and will definitely be more preventative in future runs. If worse comes to worse I will toss and restart after I sterilize the space (absolute last resort, hope it doesn’t end that way)

hey there are a few things you can do against thrips , some work some don't... folks sometimes spray neem oil on their plants, but you have to do it quite often, and it basically doesnt work and makes your but taste wierd at the end. There's also the non-bio pesticide approach, you buy a "fogger" some sort of smoke grenade that will make the thrips sterile, but since your soil will be contaminated with eggs you need to wait a few days like 5 days and fog again just to be sure. tHere's also the non pesticide way which is to buy loads of sticky strips like LOADS of them and put them all over, like over the soil, around the pots, and at various heights here and there in the grow room. You're trying to catch them before they lay eggs basically. takes a longer time but it does end up working... again you need a lot of strips. Then there's my favorite way, which is to introduce a sort of bacteria that kills off or makes the thrips sterile. look for Steinernema feltiae you just basically spray it on at a higher concentration than you would for preventative measures and in a few days they will die off and further contamination will be prevented - just follow the instructions on the packet. Biological warfare is the most effective way. Hope this helps bro. 🚀

I’ve removed all that are visible. Luckily the other plants in my tent are of no interest...lol super hot peppers probably aren’t what they wanna be eating. So far very little effect on the plants themselves. Matter of fact they could’ve been there for a few weeks now so I’m not sure what they are but they need to go, even if it’s only a few.

looks nice , how much did you get off your first try
Justnblaze
Justnblaze
@DILLIGAF, about the same ~2oz’s but chopped down the first run at 9 weeks. If I had waited another 2-3 like I did this time I’m guessing it could’ve been a lot more. It was a monster plant about 4.5ft tall compared to this runs nearly 3ft more compact plant

@Fast_Buds, thanks looking forward to seeing where this one takes me! Last round was good but got a lot bigger than i would've liked for my tent. Oh ya and you guys need to figure out US shipping, I know where to get them from authorized retailers but they don't pass on the deals you guys do directly!

@Justnblaze Just spray the leaves with all natural neem oil for 3-5 days to kill the thrips. They wont be able to eat the leaves and they will just simply die 😎
