Introduction - Week 09 Summary - Ensign's log, stardate 9877.24, Wow! Pretty busy and epic grow week! A ton got accomplished! But still a lot more to do! Checked the trichomes and have decided to start the 18/6 harvest flip next week! Automation was also added to the grow this week and as usual, things did not go as planned. Everything is okay now, but had a few issues. As for the 3x3 veg tent, cycled out my first mother plant. Also topped the rest of the plants and have been lowering the watering. Next week plan to flip to an 18/6 harvest light cycle! Also plan to cycle out the rest of the mother plants. Also planning out the next grow cycle and will be popping new genetics! The hunt continues for the next keeper! One impossible task at a time. Onwards to next week! Engage! Buds are just stacking! --- Growth is swelling up and trichomes are everywhere! Can see beautiful purples on the sugar leaves as well! - [21:35]: Time to check trichomes! --- This time going to examine the buds straight on the plant! --- Using a universal camera arm mount along with a USB microscope, --- Checked the trichomes on several bud sites from all plants, but mainly focused the #4 pheno. - [22:01]: Overall, trichomes were mainly cloudy with the slightest signs of ambering. --- Since all checks were done on top buds, going to assume that the lower trichomes are cloudy with a bit of clear. --- Regardless, --- Looks great to me! Harvest is officially a go! --- Next week will begin the 18/6 harvest flip for the final week before harvest! Instead of a 14-day flip, this time, going to harvest after about 10 days. --- Since there were slight signs of re-vegging in the last cycle, both starting earlier along with reducing down to a 10-day 18/6 harvest flip should prevent this from happening. I think. --- Anyways, - [22:08]: Checked the Ecowitt soil moisture sensor data: ------ 32% - [CH01 FP5 - Garlic Budder #1] ------ 37% - [CH02 FP5 - Original Garlic Budder #2] ------ 34% - [CH03 GR7 - Garlic Budder #3] ------ 33% - [CH04 FP5 - Garlic Budder #4] ------ 35% - [CH05 GR7 - Original Garlic Budder #2] ------ 36% - [CH06 GR7 - Original Garlic Budder #1] ------ 35% - [CH07 GR7 - Garlic Budder #2] ------ 35% - [CH08 GR5 - Original Garlic Budder #1] - [22:19]: Filled a pump sprayer with 6 cups of RO water. ------ Added 1/32tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] --- Gave the sprayer a good shake before spraying the entire solution onto #1’s straw mulch. - [22:43]: Repeated this process again for the #4 pheno. --- Focused mainly on the straw. - [22:47]: Filled the pump sprayer with 5 cups of RO water. ------ Added 1/32tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] --- Gave the sprayer a good shake before spraying the entire solution onto the original #2’s straw mulch. - [22:57]: Checked on the vegging 3x3 tent, --- Wow veg growth is looking green and perky! --- Mother clones are vegging along and still green! --- The #4 clone is also looking great and happy! --- The top canopy is getting closer to the light. Going to need to top again soon, but not now. - [23:00]: Checked the humidifiers. --- Refilled the humidifiers with distilled water as needed. --- Plan to add a way to refill these units automatically soon. Day 03 - Wednesday - 11/13/24 - Total Days: 059 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages ~[+01:00] - Temps: 77.7 °F [25.4°C] - Humidity: 64.0% - VPD: 1.16 kPa - Soil %: [37, 43, 00, 37, 27, 30, 30, 30] ----------------------------------- - [+03:10]: Late night check on the 4x4 flower tent. --- Wow the garden is just crushing it! --- Bud growth is just insane! Time to top! --- Using a pair of trimmers, --- Removed a decent amount of canopy growth. - [+04:48]: Went really heavy this time and lowered the canopy a good 6-7 inches. --- Mulched the trimmings. - [+04:53]: Checked the humidifiers. --- Refilled the humidifiers with distilled water as needed. --- Wow what a day! Onwards Ensign! Day 04 - Thursday - 11/14/24 - Total Days: 060 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages ~[+01:00] - Temps: 77.7 °F [25.4°C] - Humidity: 64.6% - VPD: 1.14 kPa - Soil %: [40, 42, 00, 38, 40, 42, 37, 41] ----------------------------------- - [13:45]: Okay! Time to add more automation to this grow! --- Going to basically use a float valve to refill the tanks with reverse osmosis water. --- Using a pair of float valves along with RO tubing and fittings, - [13:55]: Constructed a basic fill line for each humidifier by splitting off the main source line and straight into the top of the humidifier. --- Added shut off valves for ease and installed units. - [14:13]: Custom cut each fill line so each float valve is dangling just under the top of the humidifier’s lid. --- Thankfully the float valve is smaller than the humidifier’s top fill-hole. --- Although had to remove the lid and had it offset a bit to cover the hole. Also using some aluminum tape for bit of stability. - [14:21]: The float valves are design to stop the flow when the water reaches the bottom of the unit. Since the water source is straight from an RO filtration system, this will ensure the tanks remain full at all times. --- Finally, --- NO MORE HUMIDIFIER REFILLING! --- If this goes well, might drill out a hole in the top and install these as a more permanent refilling system, but this will do great for now. --- From now on, just need to check for leaks and clogs. --- As far as the main difference in water quality, distilled water is still the best (at less than 10 PPMs). But reverse osmosis water is not bad (at less than 25 PPMs) and should be okay for humidifiers. Considering that my unfiltered tap water source is way too hard (at over 400 PPMs) for humidifier usage. - [19:15]: Night check on the 4x4 flower tent. --- Wow bud growth is absolutely beautiful! --- Ooo yea! The garden is the fullest it’s ever been! --- Getting a bit worried on how I’m going to harvest and dry this cycle. Still plan to do whole plan flips, but #4 is literally taking up the entire front half of the tent. --- Might just chop the base and dry this cycle on the scrog. --- Anyways, - [19:20]: Checked the Ecowitt soil moisture sensor data: ------ 36% - [CH01 FP5 - Garlic Budder #1] ------ 39% - [CH02 FP5 - Original Garlic Budder #2] ------ 33% - [CH03 GR7 - Garlic Budder #3] ------ 34% - [CH04 FP5 - Garlic Budder #4] ------ 37% - [CH05 GR7 - Original Garlic Budder #2] ------ 43% - [CH06 GR7 - Original Garlic Budder #1] ------ 37% - [CH07 GR7 - Garlic Budder #2] ------ 43% - [CH08 GR5 - Original Garlic Budder #1] - [19:26]: Took general PPFD readings. ------ All phenos were around 423 μmol/m²/s which gives a DLI of 18.27 mol/m²/d under a 12/12 light cycle. - [19:33]: Took the weekly height and light distance measurements. ------ #1, #2, and #4 were about 41.25" tall. ------ All phenos were about 16" away from the grow light. --- Going to be watering all 3 phenos, but am also going to try a new BuildASoil product! --- This Bacillus Thuringiensis, subspecies Israelensis (BTI) inoculant is supposed to be a great fungus gnat preventative. --- Currently don’t have a gnat issue, but going to spray as a form of integrated pest management (IPM). - [20:01]: Filled a pitcher with 15 cups of RO water. ------ Added 1/8tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] ------ Added 1tsp of WDG3000 Extra Strength BTI (Bacillus Thuringiensis, subspecies Israelensis) - [20:09]: Mixed the solution and poured 5 cups straight into a pump sprayer. --- Misted #1’s straw mulch, - [21:01]: Repeated this process for both the original #2 and the #4 pheno. --- Focused on wetting the straw as evenly as possible. - [21:03]: Checked on the vegging 3x3 tent, --- Veg growth looks green and great! --- Time for the up-potting! Lots to do! Let’s go! --- Will also be culling an original #1 pheno. Since there is one in a 5-gallon and a 7-gallon, going to be culling the 5-gallon one. --- Ultimately the rest of the plants will be culled soon and swapped out with the clones rooting in the solo cups. --- Anyways, - [21:11]: Placed both the 5-gallon pheno along with the 7-gallon fabric pot from #3 on the floor. --- Using a basic hacksaw, - [21:14]: Culled the original #1 pheno. --- Mulched the trimmings. --- Also removed the soil sensor. --- Placed the 5-gallon pot onto the floor of the 4x4 tent (for temporary storage). Plan to use this soil for the next grow cycle. - [21:33]: Removed the straw mulch cover from the 7-gallon pot. --- Also removed the soil sensor and broke up and loosened up the top soil. --- Going to mix in some dry amendments. - [21:43]: Sprinkled each onto the center area of the pot, ------ 1/2 cup of Craft Blend [Nutrient Pack] ------ 1/2 cup of Gnarly Barley (Freshly Milled) ------ 1 cup of Premium Insect Frass [Black Soldier Fly] ------ 1 cup of BuildASoil Worm Castings --- Using my fingers, gently mixed the amendments into the top soil. - [21:48]: Placed a solo cup into the center of the pot. --- Flattened and gently pressed around the sides of the top soil. --- Gently removed the solo cup from the fabric pot leaving a perfect hole. ------ Sprinkled 1/4tsp of Great White, --- Dusted the sides of the hole. --- Also sprinkled a bit around the top soil. --- Great! Time to transplant! --- It’s been a day since her last watering so hopefully the soil is not too dry. - [21:53]: Gently flipped #1 upside-down which easily dropped straight out of her cup. --- Roots looked nice and healthy! --- Not the most roots I’ve ever seen, but the soil was still solid and held together nicely. --- Did not break the root ball up or anything. --- Gently placed her into the pre-inoculated hole. - [21:56]: Pressed and evened out the top soil. --- Also spread the straw mulch from the solo cup onto the top soil. --- To make a bit more room, defoliated a couple lower leaves. - [21:57]: Placed the straw mulch back onto the top soil, --- Covered the soil as evenly as I could. --- Also made sure to add - [22:07]: Added the original #1’s Ecowitt soil meter. --- Firmly pressed the meter as deep as it would go. --- Will update the soil sensor and change it to #4 later. - [22:12]: Placed #4 into the 3x3 veg tent. --- Going to give 4 cups of wetting solution for the initial transplant watering. --- Also going to be adding in some BTI. - [22:32]: Filled a pitcher with 4 cups of RO water. --- Added 1/64tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] --- Added 1/8tsp of Horticultural Aloe --- Added 1/4tsp of Horticultural Coconut --- Added 1/4tsp of Mycrobe Complete --- Added 1/4tsp of WDG3000 Extra Strength BTI (Bacillus Thuringiensis, subspecies Israelensis) --- Mixed the solution and poured the solution straight into a pump sprayer. - [22:44]: Misted #4’s straw mulch with the wetting solution. --- Took my time and tried to go as evenly as possible. - [22:57]: Checked the humidifiers. --- Tanks are still full and no leaks found. --- Wow what a day! --- Plan to add more automation soon. Going to try to add auto watering to #4 --- What can possibly go wrong!? --- Anyways, Lot’s more to do! --- Onwards Ensign! Engage! Day 05 - Friday - 11/15/24 - Total Days: 061 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages ~[+01:00] - Temps: 78.4 °F [25.8°C] - Humidity: 64.9% - VPD: 1.16 kPa - Soil %: [36, 43, 00, 35, 27, 34, 32, 52] ----------------------------------- - [21:14]: Night check on the 4x4 flower tent. --- Garden growth is looking phenomenal! --- Wow these are the frostiest (and healthiest) plants I’ve grown! --- Fabric pots with living soil is definitely the way to go! --- Watering is a bit of a chore, but plan to hopefully fix this issue soon. --- Going to try with one plant and will go from there. --- Anyways, - [21:17]: Checked the Ecowitt soil moisture sensor data: ------ 30% - [CH01 FP5 - Garlic Budder #1] ------ 37% - [CH02 FP5 - Original Garlic Budder #2] ------ 32% - [CH04 FP5 - Garlic Budder #4] ------ 25% - [CH05 GR7 - Original Garlic Budder #2] ------ 31% - [CH06 GR7 - Original Garlic Budder #1] ------ 29% - [CH07 GR7 - Garlic Budder #2] ------ 53% - [CH08 GR7 - Garlic Budder #4] - [21:56]: Filled a pump sprayer with 6 cups of RO water. ------ Added 1/32tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] --- Gave the sprayer a good shake before spraying the entire solution onto #1’s straw mulch. - [22:10]: Filled the pump sprayer with 5 cups of RO water. ------ Added 1/32tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] --- Gave the sprayer a good shake before spraying the entire solution onto the original #2’s straw mulch. --- Okay! Time to try my luck with auto watering. --- Since I have decided to stray away from sub-irrigated watering (sorry EarthBox), my grows have been better than ever! --- Now I’m fully committed to top watering straight living soil and am planning on eventually working my way up to a bed. --- With this in mind, top watering a larger volume of soil is going to be a whole lot easier with automation. --- Over the past month or so, been working on trying to add an auto top watering system and have decide to use drip rings. --- Since I already have the soil sensors, - [22:27]: Decided to try the Ecowitt WittFlow WFC01 smart water timer! --- Will also be upgrading the Ecowitt GW1100 Wi-Fi hub to the WittBoy GW2000. --- The 10in drip ring, Ecowitt hub, and smart timer units were ordered from BuildASoil. --- Thankfully, this system can be adapted to reverse osmosis tubing! --- For my particular setup, needed a few extra fittings and tubing. --- Pretty much got everything from Amazon: ------ Female 1/2in thread to 1/4in RO adapter ------ Male 1/2in thread to 1/4in RO adapter ------ Blumat 3mm rubber tubing ------ Super-Flex 8mm rubber tubing ------ 1/4in to 1/8in brass barb reducer --- Using a few valve fittings along with pieces of 1/4in RO tubing, - [23:41]: Connected the WittFlow to the RO source. --- The rubber tubing convienintly connects straight to RO tubing. The fitting is quite snug so did not use any glue or clamps. --- Routed the rubber tubing through a vent hole and straight into the tent. --- The tubing was then connected to another set of RO fittings then to a brass reducer before finally connected to the drip ring. --- Currently have the valves off. These valves give the ability to shut off the water flow for general ease and maintenance. --- After everything was connected, also setup the WittBoy GW2000 Wi-Fi hub and connected the hub to my network (the unit is outside the tent but in the lung room). --- Alright! --- Time to test the system for leaks! Let’s go! - [+00:20]: Within the Ecowitt App, --- Connected the WittFlow to the WittBoy and made sure the sensor IDs were correct. ------ Added a basic trigger to start the watering when the soil moisture (from the #4 soil sensor) drops below 33% --- ------ [A few hours later..] --- --- Had to make a not so minor and completely unexpected adjustment to the watering system. --- As usual, something went wrong. --- As soon as the pressurized water flow was turned on, the system began leaking from everywhere. --- Water sprayed out from each of the rubber connections! --- So added a few zip-ties, but the sprays turned into drips. --- Also, while under pressure, the rubber tubing started to expand. --- Something seemed wrong.. --- Shut the system off at the source and began referencing BuildASoil YouTube videos.. --- With a bit of do-it-yourself MacGuyver-ing and a few bowls later, - [+02:30]: Added a gravity feed reservoir to the auto watering system. --- Apparently water pressure was the issue. --- My reverse-osmosis water source was entering the WittFlow at around 25psi. This was way too high for this particular system. --- Now the pressurized RO source feeds straight into a 5-gallon tank via a float valve (thankfully I had a spare). --- Took a 5-gallon distilled water tank and placed it sideways. --- Then modified one of the outlets to fit a piece of 1/4in RO tubing (a hand drill, Teflon tape, and a bit of hot-glue). Also had to cut a hole for the float valve (modified an extra cap to fit the spare valve). --- Since this water in now unpressurized and under gravity, the water pressure is now around 5-8psi. --- To maintain this pressure, in terms of elevation, the tank is positioned above #4’s soil level inside the tent. --- From the this tank, the water flows into the WittFlow smart switch. --- To maintain the gravity fed pressure, moved the WittFlow to the floor. - [+03:14]: Had to also add a second trigger condition. --- Within the Ecowitt App, ------ Added a second trigger to turn the water flow off once the #4 soil sensor reaches above 38% --- Now there are finally no leaks and the system seems to be working nicely! --- Since the system is under a lower psi, the zip-ties are probably unnecessary, but left them on anyways. --- Going to continue to check for leaks and will just hope for the best. --- Gave the veg tent a quick peak, but will do a full check tomorrow. Day 06 - Saturday - 11/16/24 - Total Days: 062 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages ~[+01:00] - Temps: 77.4 °F [25.2°C] - Humidity: 65.4% - VPD: 1.10 kPa - Soil %: [39, 45, 00, 42, 26, 29, 28, 51] ----------------------------------- - [20:12]: Night check on the 4x4 flower tent. --- Looking great! Bud growth is turning purple and frosty! --- Hyped to start the 18/6 flip soon! - [20:33]: Checked the Ecowitt soil moisture sensor data: ------ 32% - [CH01 FP5 - Garlic Budder #1] ------ 40% - [CH02 FP5 - Original Garlic Budder #2] ------ 41% - [CH04 FP5 - Garlic Budder #4] ------ 22% - [CH05 GR7 - Original Garlic Budder #2] ------ 28% - [CH06 GR7 - Original Garlic Budder #1] ------ 25% - [CH07 GR7 - Garlic Budder #2] ------ 49% - [CH08 GR7 - Garlic Budder #4] - [20:50]: Filled a pump sprayer with 6 cups of RO water. ------ Added 1/32tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] --- Gave the sprayer a good shake before spraying the entire solution onto #1’s straw mulch. --- Focused mainly on the straw. - [21:05]: Filled the pump sprayer with 4 cups of RO water. ------ Added 1/64tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] --- Gave the sprayer a good shake before spraying the entire solution onto the original #2’s straw mulch. - [21:19]: Checked on the #4 pheno. --- No leaks and the system seems to be working fine! - [21:26]: Checked on the vegging 3x3 tent, --- Nice! Veg growth is still looking great! --- #4 is green and looking happy! --- The mother clones are also looking perky and green! --- Also the top canopy growth is still low and vegging along nicely! - [21:38]: Filled a pump sprayer with 2 cups of RO water. ------ Added a pinch of Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] --- Gave the sprayer a good shake before spraying the entire solution onto the original #2’s straw mulch. - [21:53]: Repeated this process again for the original #2 pheno. --- Focused mainly on the straw. - [21:54]: Checked the humidifiers. --- Tanks are still full and no leaks found. Day 07 - Sunday - 11/17/24 - Total Days: 063 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages ~[+01:00] - Temps: 76.7 °F [24.8°C] - Humidity: 65.5% - VPD: 1.07 kPa - Soil %: [39, 43, 00, 36, 32, 26, 34, 47] ----------------------------------- - [20:59]: Night check on the 4x4 flower tent. --- Ooo yea! --- Bud colas are continuing to frost up! --- Also terpenes are smelling great! Nothing fruity, getting earth fuel profiles! --- Planning on flipping to 18/6 for the final week of flower and am stoked to see how these buds bulk up! - [21:05]: Checked the Ecowitt soil moisture sensor data: ------ 33% - [CH01 FP5 - Garlic Budder #1] ------ 38% - [CH02 FP5 - Original Garlic Budder #2] ------ 34% - [CH04 FP5 - Garlic Budder #4] ------ 25% - [CH05 GR7 - Original Garlic Budder #2] ------ 25% - [CH06 GR7 - Original Garlic Budder #1] ------ 30% - [CH07 GR7 - Garlic Budder #2] ------ 46% - [CH08 GR7 - Garlic Budder #4] - [21:34]: Filled a pump sprayer with 6 cups of RO water. ------ Added 1/32tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] --- Gave the sprayer a good shake before spraying the entire solution onto #1’s straw mulch. --- Focused mainly on the straw. - [21:44]: Filled the pump sprayer with 4 cups of RO water. ------ Added 1/64tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] --- Gave the sprayer a good shake before spraying the entire solution onto the original #2’s straw mulch. - [+00:32]: Checked on the vegging 3x3 tent, --- Veg growth looks good. --- Both #4 and the clones are still green. --- Plan to cycle out the rest of the mother plants soon. - [+00:43]: Checked the humidifiers. --- Tank is still full and no leaks found. --- Had a bit of an issue with the main tent’s humidifier and now have to replace it. Basically the gravity reservoir tank started to leak and had to be replaced. During this process, accidentally flooded and broke the main tent’s humidifier. --- This also caused the exhaust fan to cut off. Apparently port 2 and 3 are not totally independent and seem affect each other. --- Anyways, --- Already have a replacement humidifier on its way. Thankfully during this stage of flower, humidity is not really needed. --- Regardless, really don’t want to swap out the exhaust fan, but may have to. Going to keep checking back for leaks but everything seems to be fine for now. --- What a week! --- Issues aside, this was a great grow week! Gotta keep on growing! --- Plan to cycle out the mother plants next week and need to start planning out how to harvest this grow. --- Also with the next grow cycle starting soon, planning on popping new genetics! --- Will also probably pop two seeds and take two clone cuttings from the mother tent to make the next cycle a hybrid seed and clone run. --- Still determining the genetics, but need to decide soon. Hyped to get back to seed popping again! The pheno hunt continues! --- Anyways, --- Onwards to next week! Engage! [END OF WEEK 09]
