Of course I asked the question before I got the right terms in to a search. For anyone else that has thought of water cure, I found a couple of good articles that confirm the above answer to my question.

Next time I will try it without hanging to dry first.
I haven't been waiting 24 hours to change the water, just till it stops changing in color or clarity. About every 8 hours the first day (probably try more often next time). First and second days the water would turn the color of water in the bucket she was grown from, day 3 the water only turned cloudy so far. Each time the water drained off smells less and less like weed. I'm going to continue changing the water twice a day till it smells the least. I plan on mixing this into my walking around blunts, so less weed smell the better.
