Updates/Observations:
Rasta Jeff of Irie Genetics and the Grow From Your Heart Podcast sent me some more seeds to document and test out so here we go again! Excellent podcast that I would definitely recommend if you are a Cannabis enthusiast or need some help in the grow.
This is one of the more exciting ones for me because I have such a positive bodily response to Durban Poison. It is definitely one of the more medicinally beneficial strains for me. Recreationally, it is one of my favorites too because of the nice uplifting, energetic, euphoric effects it gives me. Take that and cross it to Arise, which is Irie Genetics flagship strain testing in excess of 30% (as high as 37%) total cannibinoids and it is a recipe for success. I have grown several Arise crosses and have never once been disappointed with the flavor and vigor. I cannot wait to see what this new cross' can do.
Also, you might see 3 other plants in the same container that are my own creation. A few grows ago, I hit a branch of my most orange-soda-smelling Sunkiss from Irie Genetics with some MAC pollen gifted to me by a friend and made a few hundred seeds. I decided to pop 3 of them for fun so they will just be in the background of this journal. Who knows what will happen!
Thanks Jeff!
Cheers!

Sprout: 1/9/19
Age: Day 12 as of 1/20/19
Updates/Observations:
-Everything is pretty even in terms of growth.
-Some of the seedlings show a little yellowing but I have found this to be sort of normal for plants to experience early stress as they form their initial relationships with the microbes in the bed.
-Top dressed in some rice hulls I could't include in the mixing unfortunately. Rice hulls degrade into plant available Silica which is useful for many things, most notably plant cell wall strength.
-I have trimmed the cover crop a few times because it is booming!
-Sunkiss x MAC seeds seem to be keeping up so far!
Cheers!

Age: Day 18 as of 1/27/19
Updates/Observations:
-I see some purpling on the stems and leaves of most of the plants which I believe is from the temperature being pretty low. We had some temps around -30F to -40F and I couldn't get it any warmer but I think they will be alright in the long run.
-I have been continuously fighting the cover crop back which I think is a good sign!
-The drainage holes that I drilled in the pond container don't appear to be functional because the soil is very wet (based on rapidtest meter, unsure of accuracy) and refuses to drain. I am going to hold off on watering heavy until I the plants drink some of that up and show me they are running low.
-One of the Sunkiss x MAC seeds appears to be the fastest growing plant so far!
Cheers!

Age: Day 26 as of 2/4/19
Updates/Observations:
-I still haven't really watered in about 2 weeks because I watered going on too much during the activation period. Whoops! Guess Clover doesn't take that much water!
-Most of the Dragons are about the same height. Sunkiss x MAC #1 was growing up taller than the rest and had good node spacing so I used a foam wire tie to tie it down a bit. Those things are awesome! New best find at the nursery store for sure. Makes training a breeze.
-They have about another several inches to grow upwards before I drop the net on them but they are picking up speed now.
-Starting to look nice and green now. I am really liking their progress but not much to report for now.
-Many different leaf representations here which I like to see in this initial selection.
Cheers!

Age: Day 31 as of 2/9/19
Updates/Observations:
-Used the foam wire on most of the plants to bend them over a bit just before the scrog net so I can have more branches to work with.
-Lots of activity at the soil surface. Anything dead is covered in a white fuzzy cover not long after it falls.
-Still don't really water, just about a half gallon of water into the res last week to keep the worms happy.
-Really liking the health and look of these plants. Just want them to get to the net. We are about 1 inch away!
-Double Dragon #3 appears to be the alpha in the group so far.
-Once the scrog net is mostly full we will head into flower!
Cheers!

Grow Schedule to Date:
Sprout: 1/9/19
Age: Day 37 as of 2/15/19
Updates/Observations:
-All of the plants are doing pretty well. There is some slight nitrogen overabundance on the Sunkiss x MAC side but it looks to still be in check right now.
-I still don't really water, just about a half gallon of water into the res last week to keep the worms happy. The water conservation on this bed is pretty amazing. In total, I think I have watered about 5 gallons into the bed in 10 weeks!
-I removed any growth on the plants that was touching the ground or too old. Some refer to this practice as lollipopping.
-I also mowed the cover crop to give the plants some room to breathe and give the worms some good nutrient rich food as we move into flower. Everything the cover crop took, is given back to the soil. Nothing is wasted here folks. I like to think I respect the plant in that way similar to how I would think of a moose or buffalo hunted for food for my family; honor/respect the sacrifice and the cycle always. 👍
-I removed several tops to open up the canopy a bit. I took those tops and put them in my homemade aero cloner (cost about $15 to make-see picture).
-After the clones root, I will plant them into the second bed seen in the veg tent.
-Once I have identified my keeper pheno(s), I plan to self them to make my own feminized seeds for future runs. Ideally, I am moving towards a rotating cycle with at least half of each run made up of feminized seeds to guarantee some final numbers moving into flower. Silly restrictive plant counts keep my numbers low.
Cheers!

-I dropped the photo period by 2 hours each day this last week from 20/4 down to 11/14 for the remainder of the grow.
-No sign of sex yet but I will keep my eyes peeled.
-These plants have extremely thick stalks for some reason. Definitely the thickest of any I have grown at their age.
-Clones are chugging along but we will see how they do, no roots yet.
Cheers!

Updates/Observations:
-I was able to confirm that Double Dragon #2 and Sunkiss x MAC #3 were males. They were culled, chopping them up and layering them down into the mulch layer.
-I was also able to confirm that Double Dragon #3 and Sunkiss x MAC #2 are females! Yay! 🙌
-Used foam wires and super cropping to train the remaining apical meristems into the holes in the canopy that culling the males opened up.
-Most of the plants continue to show a nitrogen overabundance in slightly clawed leaf tips but it doesn't seem to be adversely effecting them a this time.
-Clones were tough to maintain in the clone set up I had so they had to be given to the worms. I have decided to eventually just reveg this pod and take clones from that for my selfing run.
-Plants started to get stinky so I installed a carbon filter to help keep it down a bit. I have never had veg plants that smelled so much.
-I have actually been able to start watering about a half gallon every 3 days approximately so they are drinking quite a bit now.
-Cleaned out my water reservoir and drip lines with a vinegar solution for maintenance.
-Applied some cable management best practices to clean up the grow rooms a bit and make it a bit more satisfying to look at. 😏
Cheers!

-Lots of open space without the males in the canopy unfortunately. Feminized seeds are next lol.
-The SKM I was left with was my worst plant but luckily the DD I have left is my best plant. I will most likely reveg this bed after this run to recover the DD for a selfing experiment.
-Most of the plants continue to show a nitrogen overabundance in slightly clawed leaf tips but it doesn't seem to be adversely effecting them a this time.
-More and more pistils are visible every day.
-The plant's growth rates are pretty manageable and it looks like the stretch won't be too bad.

-I threw some shots of the Dragon that didn't make it into this pot to run with these plants, #4. She is an absolute branchy monster plant! Growing up close to the light so she isn't super happy but the flower room won't be empty for a while. May need to build a bigger tent. Hmm, decisions.

-Lots of strong odor coming form these plants and I am really excited to get them dried and in the jars.
-Really happy with how they turned out. I learned that under these lights the plants don't stretch much so I changed up my plant size for the next run :)
-I removed and separated the branches that I pollinated in week 5 of flower. The crosses I made were Double Dragon x Durban Poison F3 and (Sunkiss x MAC) x Durban Poison F3.
-Had a lot of fun with this run and she did great for having an autopilot grow going. Couldn't spend much time out there but it is all good.
-Smoke report and harvest weights coming in the next weeks!

This is a real Sativa for me and my favorite thing I have grown by Irie Genetics so far. Get up and get your stuff done herb if you are inclined that way but definitely a heavy forehead punch that can sit me down if that is what is necessary too. Very strong in effect lasting over several hours for me as a daily consumer. She has this sweet, lemony, tone with an undercurrent of Durban Poison flavored cleaning products that makes people (myself included) say WOW anytime I open this jar.
Grew like a champion and the only thing I wish I could change is that I put too much nutrients in the soil so they didn't really flush out as much as I would have like.

This was my first run in this environment and in this 30 gallon system. I learned a ton!
I started this run with 6 regular seeds in this pot and unfortunately, only the two smaller of the plants ended up being females. I didn't know this for sure of course until about week 2 of flower, well after the race has started hence the low numbers on the scale. It may not be a lot now, but I have a big momma midway through flower now and another big clone on the way, and what I do have so far is absolutely dank. I plan to work with a genetic sex testing company to prevent this type of thing from happening in the future. I may also switch to smaller pots for a while to run some seeds.
I just used my fingers and LST with the foam wrapped wire moderately to shape the plants into an even canopy.
Water, Recharge, and Mammoth P for this organic pot's whole life. I gave it nothing for the last 4 weeks of it's life.
@GrimbolTheDruid, you might regret your kind offer in a couple weeks 😅 but for now i warmly accept 🙌your offer for help , will ping you kindly down the line :bow: 🙏
@CRiSPrGrow,
You are most welcome my friend. Always feel free to ask me any questions and I’ll do my best to answer or point you towards someone smarter than me.
ah i see better wtf a foam wire is now, thanks for this high level diary bro, i'm learning shittons, really + i'm 10/10 with @thebudwhisperer defo gonna do me some grimbolLST next run 🙌 🙌 🙌 🙌
@Budcrack,
I will get there sometime my friend, but thank you very much for your support!
As far as a source for no-till stuff, I would recommend starting at buildasoil.com. They have all the reading material you need and very fair prices for top quality amendments. That is where I get most of my stuff.
Good luck!

@CRiSPrGrow,
To be honest I am really just paying attention to the plants and every 4 days seems to keep them praying pretty consistently. Hard to know for sure. 🙏

@CaliGrown,
Thanks man! It is a lot of fun but I won't lie, trying to dial in watering without being able to pick up the pot is roughhhhhhhh. Kind of missing pots tbh lol.
@GrimbolTheDruid, very cool ! hopefully one day Bulbi will grow some experimentals from the Grimbol lol i love home breeding very cool beans ! pun intended !
@CRiSPrGrow,
For the males? Nah they went back to the soil. Chopped them up and dropped them into the pot for the worms.
There will be an experiment coming up though!
Cheers!
@GrimbolTheDruid, You're welcome, and glad you liked the name, haha! I'm an organic grower as well. Still new to the growing game, but I think my next round I will have it dialed in more. Nothing beats the taste of organic.
@CRiSPrGrow,
Thanks man! I will definitely keep you updated on her. One of those beans grown out about a year or so ago was some of my favorite Meph smoke I have ever had.
Might have some crazy new stuff on the way though, get ready!
Grower's love,
Grimbol
