Hey everyone. So i started experimenting with the Sour Stomper about 4-5 weeks ago now, however the first 2 didn't survive and the 3rd plant is much bigger and further along than these last 2 seeds. Since there's such a difference i decided to put the re-do (mulligan) seeds into their own diary to keep things a bit easier.
I germinated the 2 sour stomper seeds by soaking them for about 12 hours and then moved them into the paper towel method. They both sent out a taproot within the 48 hours. They were then planted into small cups with Fox Farms Happy Frog potting soil. They broke the surface within about another 24 hours.
For their early seedling stage they've been under a CFL setup with a clip lamp and 160 watts of "daylight " colored bulbs.
This has been a great week!
The girls were having some mild stretching but that's hopefully been fixed.
They had both developed a decent amount of roots in their small cups so it was time to transplant them. I initially thought about doing a 1 gallon and a 3 gallon for comparison purposes but I eventually decided on putting them both into 3 gallon fabric pots.
They also got moved into their new home, a 2x2x4 tent with a 300 watt led. So far they haven't shown any adverse effects from the new lighting which is great. I think they're much happier in the tent since I'm able to boost their humidity into a more comfortable zone and keep the heat pretty warm as well.
I sprinkled a small amount of mycorrhizal fungi into their transplant holes and maybe that will help with any shock etc.
Happy growing to everyone, thanks for looking at the diaries and all the advice and support. ✌️💚🌱
This has been a great week for these Sour Stompers.
They're looking fairly healthy and strong and seem satisfied by the change in light and room. Ive been able to keep the humidity higher which surely makes them happy...but I've also been having day temps staying pretty steady in the 84 range and i wish it would go a few degrees lower.
Since the temperatures have been sometimes up to like 86 F I decided to give them a small dose of kelp in the hopes it actually does help cope with temperatures etc. They're also getting a good dose of micronutrients and a very minimal dose of grow nutrients. I haven't seen any adverse side effects as of yet.
I've been very tempted to try doing some training on these 2 plants, however given the disastrous attempt and snap of the older sister I think I should let them grow natural first. I'll try some training once I've got a better understanding of these time bomb auto flowering varieties.
Thanks for everyone's advice and encouragement over the recent indoor adventure. Cheers to spring coming to the northern hemisphere here soon. ✌️
It's amazing how changing a few small conditions will make the plants so much more healthy, happy and vigorous. These 2 sour stompers did some amazing growth this week both vertically and width wise. The one is basically as wide as it is tall now which is great. They both have great color and just look very happy overall.
Both plants are receiving the low dose feedings still and i haven't seen any unhealthy leaves or any other bad side effects.
I had thought trying to train them with some lst was a good idea but as i saw the 1 sour stomper i grew suffer i decided to let them grow naturally and just tuck the larger leaves that are blocking the new growth sites.
I believe this will be the last vegetative week as ive started seeing very small signs of pistils beginning to try creeping out. With the incredible amount of growth they did in just the last 7 days i expect by next week they'll be entirely different. So my main goal is keeping them happy and disaster free.
* I have noticed a small scent of fresh growing cannabis around, not overwhelming, but definitely present. I saw an interesting video of a home made carbon filter and have looked at other options too and will decide on what to try here soon.
Happy growing everyone.
What an incredible week!
This week marks the beginning of the flowering period. She's got pistils poking out of all of her nodes and its it's only going to get better as we go.
This week was incredible because of growth. The amount these 2 plants grew in a 7 day period was astonishing! I once had someone tell me that auto flowering plants don't have a flowering stretch and after this weeks progress, I'm not sure i can agree with that. In one night alone they grew about 4 inches and it all began with the sight of the 1st pistils.
On the 14th the measured at about 10/11 inches. 2 days later they were at 14 inches. On the 19th they were 17/19 inches. On the 21st they measured 22 inches. So if that's not a flowering stretch it's definitely a rapid explosion of growth in a 1 week period.
I've been trying to feed the plants moderately and they're needing watering about every 2 days.
I did defoliate slightly, I had seen some very large fan leaves that were really blocking up the light flow and I got tired of trying to tuck them. I'm hopeful it wasn't too much removed and given their still rigorous growth I think they'll be completely alright.
Happy growing to everyone. ✌️
Hey everyone, so for only just the couple weeks into flowering the plants doing pretty good. All her little buds sites are getting more and more full of pistils.
The only massive problem that's happening is that she had grown so much since her initial flowering, that now the top of my tent is running out of room. I have my light set as high as it can possibly go and that's still really only leaving maybe 6-10 inches of available space. Because of this the plants have slowly gotten more burnt looking tips and most leaves are usually pointing straight up, not like a pleasant praying leaf but more like a pissed off leaf would do.
I picked up 2 small stakes to place in each pot in an attempt to pull the plants tops a little further from the light. It worked well enough but I'm being as gentle as possible so I don't snap them like my previous plant. I'm learning how critical it is to do at least minimal tie downs when theyre still pliable..even if that's just pulling the main stem over at a 90° angle so as to prevent that being the topmost part of the plant.
I'm going to examine available options and try changing something before the buds and every other part get burnt to a crisp.
I'm continuing to keep nutrients at about 1/2 strength and have added some Kelp me Kelp You as a little plant tonic. Ive also slowly reduced the lighting by a half hour each day or so to get near an 18/6 schedule. Perhaps less hours will reduce the amount of burning happening.
Now, All I can do now is watch and wait and make small adjustments where possible. Happy growing everyone ✌️
A good week for changes.
The grow had started in a 2x2x4 tent with 1 300 led and the plants had done very well with that environment. But once flowering began they had such a dramatic increase in height the light started being a bit too close, leaves getting burned and just generally unhappy looking top of plant. So I was able to change things slightly to a 4x5x2 tent and add in an additional 300 led. The height wasn't a great increase, but enough to keep the lights being directly on top of them and enough width to give them all a bit of breathing room. The only flaw with the tent is i began to notice a variety of small pinholes of light shining through and the zipper as well, so before i flower any photo periods in there I'll need to fix that.
I did notice that with the extra space and the extra light a few changes to the environment happened. My temperature went up a few degrees and my humidity went down significantly from being in the 55-70% range down to my areas more normal zone of 30%. I'm a bit unhappy by the humidity decrease, but i also don't want to remove the 4 inch intake fan or my clip fan or the temps raise even more.
Overall I think things are going as well as they can be, buds are developing nicely and there's much more room to maneuver things around and water etc. I expect the plants maybe have another 4 weeks to go, so I'll try staying up on watching the trichromes and hairs better this time.
Happy growing everyone ✌️
This has been an interesting week for recognizing unusual differences but also a great week for bud development.
My current setup of a 4x5x2 tent with two "300" watt LEDs for light. The 2 LEDs however are not the same brand or appearance of chips(bulbs) etc. So naturally I am seeing 1 of the plants under the more purple light developing faster and a much higher trichrome density than the 2nd plant under the weaker, more white light, unusual led, which has far more plain green leaves with minimal trichromes and also less developed buds. I think we all know that the led market is unpredictable...but to see two identical sized plants developing and maturing so differently is fascinating and frustrating.
The heat in the room has risen slightly to the 81 range and the humidity has stayed relatively low since the into of the duct fan and the additional light. The plants are also having to battle with the lights being slightly too close. However I've been checking the leaf surface temps and they're not usually going higher than 75 degrees. I recently positioned 1 light at a side angle to try to give the plants more space and only time will tell whether it helps or not.
The nutrients have stayed fairly consistent with the exception of adding in a small dose of beastie bloomz once a week for additional P K boost.
Pistils are starting to change color and the plants are extremely sticky, oily, and smelly. Hopefully these are all good signs.
*Learning lesson: must add pumice or other heavier material to soil mixture next time, perilite is too light and floats around the pot rather than staying put throughout the mixture.
Happy growing and harvesting everyone.✌️
It's been a long confusing week. These sour stompers are far different than the one test plant, they're bigger, stronger and much faster at growing vegetative. However the size and speed brought other problems like how to manage the gear and plants within my confined space. Even expanding the tent to the 4x5x2 wasn't enough and I've battled with light intensity the whole time but at a manageable level, only burning just the tips of leaves slowly over time.
I expect the end is only a week or two off going by the trichromes getting ever more bulbous everyday and by how many orange hairs have come. The only hard thing is going by the pistils discoloring some of the plant is ready and the bottom buds aren't. The low buds still have many white swollen pistils, but also the very top most buds have white pistils poking out which makes me think the light is actually irritating the top buds after all not just the leaves. I suppose only time will tell but I'm planning to chop the plant as long as the majority is matured even if the tops are behaving badly.
The only other odd thing I've seen happen is several leaves have slowly discolored and then fully changed and became crisp, possibly a reaction to the high PK values in the Beastie Bloomz that i gave the last couple weeks, once a week; or it could be Nitrogen deficiency. Because of this and the maturity of the plants I'm removing the nutrients and sticking with plain water from now until the end. I may add small amounts of molasses just to keep the soil from being completely starved and to see if they can bulk up a bit more.
Happy growing everyone and remember to LST your plants at an early age to prevent space dilemmas. ✌️
It's always a good week when you realize the end is here.
I let the plant continue another several days, feeding it only water. It's amazing to watch how much a plant drinks when it has fully developed roots and is so far into flowering. They needed watering basically everyday and I'm hopefull this got any lingering nutrients or salt buildup out. I also went through and cleaned out the majority of any fan leaves to open up the low budsites in the hopes they'll mature a bit more before the chop.
Mostly this has been a fun week for taking photographs and planning out the harvest. Being in the desert my humidity is usually below 35% so previous plants have dried to quickly and had bad results because of it, I'm determined to try to avoid that and get them jarred before they get crispy beyond fixing.
This has been an amazing second attempt at the Sour Stomper and it's definitely improved over first indoor plant. Just a few changes and the difference was mind blowing.
Happy Spring Everyone ✌️
Sour Stomper was an amazing plant, not only is it one of the absolute stickiest plants I've laid hands on but a very pleasant smelling one also. This strain is perfect for smoking but even more successful as a rosin pressing product. The descriptions about it weren't off, the strong fruity grape smell and the crazy resinous buds. I didn't notice any unusual genetic type defects, no hermies or other instabilities, just solid consistency seed after seed. This grow was seeds 3 and 4 out of 5 I had germinated and the buds were very similar to the previous grow, but unbelievably more successful once I created a better grow environment. This is a great strain that anyone can grow regardless of skill level and still get results. Plant A harvested at 75 days. Plant B harvested 77 days.
I won't say it was a perfect growing experience, because i kept running into problems with keeping the lights a good distance away, but that was the most difficult problem I faced.
It was definitely a very successful do-over. Both of these plants easily were 2 times the size (width/height) of my 1st sour stomper attempt, they yielded at least double and in Plant A's case...triple. And all by the few simple changes of using LEDs earlier in the grow, larger pots, being in a tent and having one tiny duct fan.
My nutrient regimen stayed pretty low and for the most part the same as previous grow. However in my opinion one of the most crucial differences was having them in the 3 gallon pots. They didn't dry out as quickly and they were able to be soaked more effectively than the 1 gallon smart pot had been.
For me this was a very important grow on grow diaries as this was basically Part 2 of my first indoor, man made grow. Learning these minimal differences in how to have plants turn out enormously better was essential to any future indoor grows I might do, even though I'm sure i just skimmed the surface on potential problems that could occur and how to fix them.
The buds from this grow were not only dense enough to be worth smoking, but every piece of the plant including its leaves will be useful for pressing. The couple presses i did on this plant so far had a beautiful golden color, an amazing smell, and had zero plant byproducts inside it from using the 90 micron bags. The only downfall with the micron bags and the pucks are they retain a fair amount of the pressed rosin, the only solutions I can think of would be to add them to an edibles mixture or to stack them all up and continue repressing.
All in all this was a fantastic grow, and I'm very grateful for all the support and for mephisto for making such a solid strain.
Are there any opinions on what sort of lighting is best for seedlings? Should they get a lower light intensity than bigger veg plants, or does a 300 watt not sound too strong?
I've usually started babies under cfl lights...just curious if its safe to expose them to others in their 1st week or so.
@starphish, I can definitely see that...i think i start thinking the plants need much more than they really do and i regret it later. The more i leave them alone the better they do most the time.
@Experimentgreen,
From my 10+ experience you can get by with a lot less for seedlings. (single cfl) However when applied to autoflowers. I like to give them all I can the entire photoperiod. I've done seed to flower with a 300watt (127 true watts) Roleadro and it did great albeit smaller yields with less light but speed and vigor was there :)
My pumice floats a little. It is much better than pearlite regarding to float. After a month in my pot, pumice no longer float. And I tend to blend fine size with small size.
@Med_in_Tropic, ill try that thanks for the tip. There is a diamataceous earth product that fine like the pumice but it's expensive but it lets out silica into the grow slowly which is awesome and then keeps some bugs at bay.
Beautiful! Amazing job. Love mephisto genetics. Have a few mystery mix seeds going and really hoping one turns out to be these. Keep doing what your doing and best of luck with the rest of your grow
@Denzul, thanks it's been an exciting indoor season. My 1st sour stomper was a bit of a mess but with a few changes these 2 turned out much bigger, wider, fuller canopy and just over all better. How will you know what the mysteries are? Educated guessing?✌️
Pretty much. Meph only carries about 30 strains at a time so sometimes you can compare it to other diaries to determine. Sometimes it's just to hard to determine. Mephheads on reddit are also extremely helpful thread to help figure it out.
@ChefDan420, Thanks, its amazing how much better these 2 sour stompers are doing versus the 1st one. Just a few small adjustments and they're way healthier, more full foliage. It's great
