Super excited this week! I've really been wanting to try growing outdoors, so I built a cheap hoop house! Got most of this stuff for the frame from Lowes under 300$. All the soil products I got from GrowGreenMI. Some really cool people out there.
One thing I'm super worried about is drainage. Right now those holes are about 4 feet deep and they've got about 4 inches of water in them already. What's been cautioned is that, eventually, about 2 months in these plants roots will grow and reach the bottom and cause root rot to form. One of the biggest things I was trying to be wary of was causing root rot. This was also the biggest precautionary measure I took when mixing the soil. Adding the extra perlite, coco, and clay pebbles. Best advice right now is to build the soil up on the holes another 16 to 18 inches and possible stick a PVC pipe down to the lowest drainage point of the hole to allow some of that natural occurring water to evaporate.
Any advice anyone has on it is welcomed!
Making a compost tea for the soil outdoors, will probably put 2 cups in each RDWC bucket as well and let that do it's magic for a day or so before nutrient change. Raised the bed about 14 inches as well!
All the seeds sank! Off to a good start! Lol
If you check in the video above with the soil I have a lot of natural water occurring in the holes. What's the best way to prevent root rot from occurring given the circumstances?
ive grown a ton of tomatoes and peppers in containers and from my experience that won't really happen man. the plants are gonna be hella happy in that thing no matter what there is area for the roots to dig into and grow in the ground, it doesnt mean that those roots need to necessarily have a job, and some roots may rot, but it doesn't mean that that root was useful anyway. it may have grown for a specific part of the plant and then rotted and the plant then signals the rest of the plant to uptake from other roots. the amount of roots in the ground doesn't mean much because a plant can only grow so fast and so optimally, beyond that it will fix every problem given the right environment. the environment your giving it is like plant-steroids habitat. the plant will not have needed the potentially rotted root if it ''rots'' in this great environment you are giving it. it would simply just discard it while fungus bacteria trichodermia and other bioturbulent insects would clear the way for more roots to grow anyway. I saw your vid of watering the soil I think your 300 dollar tent is awesome and I wish when I built mine I could have beena bit more simpler, Now im downsizing and im going to use that little pvc tube thing to encase my little grow area because a squared wooden roof was just a stupid idea. yours looks so simple dang. wish I didn't put so much thought into mine.
Pretty routine week with the seedlings. Unfortunately the ILGM Super Lemon Haze didn't root. Tap root popped and got in the ground, but didn't grow an inch for 4 days. Root stayed the same size and stem and leaves never sprouted up. I'm pretty sure I screwed up and had the fan blowing directly on this one, probably got too cold. So I replaced her with a GSC that's germinating now. Autoflowers popped so that made me happy! I was worried that there might be too much in the soil to let them do their thing. I've always heard autoflowers need about 1.2 recommended dosage for nutes and didn't think about it when putting my soil together. Anyway hope next week we'll have first true leaves!
Have just been watering these girls with RO Water to 6.5 and Liquid Seaweed.
Sorry for the blurple pics, it's night here and didn't even think about putting white light's in this tent yet. Figured soon enough they'll be out in the sunshine anyway!
Another week of Veg, girls are still indoors. Today is the last day of sub 40 over night. With the greenhouse, night time temps should be able to stay above 50. Hopefully thats not too harsh. The 3 Photos are doing well, however the GSE seems to be taking her time getting her first leaves. Right now the coytl's are barely through the soil. Hopefully in the next few days that'll pick up dramatically. I will be transfering the photo's tomorrow with the exception of the GSE, I'll wait for her first true leaves and spend a week trying to harden her before putting her in the ground.
The companion plants for this grow are doing well, Lavender and dill have sprouted, along with the alfalfa in the beds are growing well. Green beans are taking a minute to produce, but the chamomile is coming quicker than i anticipated. I noticed a few soil nats, so i picked up some venus fly traps and neem oil.
Finally got these girls outside! The weather here has been so inconsistent it was long over due. They all seem to be very healthy, and i've started LST on the 2 Autos.
Unfortunately my dog ate the GSE seedling when I was transplanting, so starting that one over again, she'll be about 3 weeks behind the others.
I've maintained watering them with GH feed schedule, staying in vegetative growth week. My plan is to feed them weekly and water with PH"d RO'd water with some seaweed and molasses in between. Every other week I'll make a compost tea and throw that in the cycle.
Going to give them a few more days to get rooted and will probably top the photo's.
So far so good, other than the dog eating one haha.
Should I top plants outdoors? I'd imagine the sun would be powerful enough to penetrate an uneven canopy, however I don't have unlimited growspace, Depending on how tall these girls get they could very easily grow through the literal ceiling. Any thoughts?
I’m not sure how high your ceiling is and the average height of each of your strains but If you think that height will be an issue then I’d say top them. From what I’ve seen there may not be much difference in yield cause the sun can penetrate deeply, but if you don’t mind losing a few days growth, then save yourself a hassle down the track and just top them once.
Well kind of a shitty week. The weather has been garbage, it snowed twice... yeah snowed. There is not a whole lot of growth to report on due to the weather. The Grand Daddy Purple has a lot of space between it's nodes this week, to what I can only attribute to the poor lighting with it being over casted, cold and snowing all week.
The other 2 photo's are doing just as well as you can see, again not a whole lot of growth after the topping, but I'm assuming the environment for them has not been as favorable as needed, so they are just focusing all their energy on not dying. Which I'm totally cool with lol.
The mephisto's are growing well, I'm still training them around the pot trying to get more tops out of them. The ChemDawg is doing significantly better than the Sweet N Sour,
I haven't had to do hardly any watering this week as the soil is still damp, temps are cold and humidity is high. I did water and feed them today though as we are expecting temps and weather to reach mid 70
s this week.
The Girl Scout Cookies is still in her seedling phase, not sure why this strain is giving me so much trouble, but she's not dead, and first true leaves are just starting to poke out, I've got her in the indoor tent with my Auto grow soaking up some light and hoping that gets her hardy enough to bring her outdoors.
