Grow Questions

BarrieGrowerstarted grow question 5 years ago
The question is do I defoliate the outdoor plants? I figure outdoor should be the same as indoor and it should work. I also know the sun is extremely hot and maybe keeping the fan leaves is better. I have a plant starting budding and wonder if I should Any help is appreciated

I can speak from living in Ontario and some defoliation is usually necessary to avoid powdery mildew. It is really warm and humid here and things like PM and Bud Rot are a real thing for everyone growing in Ontario. I've been growing outdoor for a few years now and good air circulation is the best tool in avoiding this.

Planning my outdoor grow, have my location picked. Given life and responsibly's sometimes get in the way, watering is a big concern. Has anyone used water crystals to suplement frequent watering? If you could let me know how it worked for you that would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

TheBudWhisperercommented6 years ago
@BarrieGrower, nice dude and lookn good. IMHO - anything you can do in the way of additional watering and nutes when it comes to outdoor, in ground is just a bonus. If u canโ€™t due to time or travel however, they should be just fine when left alone to Mother Nature - thatโ€™s what she always intended anyway๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Ž
TheBudWhisperer
TheBudWhisperercommentedweek 26 years ago
And a helpful tip for ya - starting indoors is great where weโ€™re at because you want the girls strong before they go in the ground in late May (eliminates frost concerns for those freak temp. Swings). Only thing to be mindful of when starting indoors is the light cycle - right now weโ€™re getting like 14 hours of sunlight in Ontario so your grow light timer should try to mimick that as best as possible. Otherwise, it is possible that the girls start flowering prematurely after you move em outside.๐Ÿ‘ not a major issue but if you want to grow some monster trees with extra veg. Time then this is a definite concern. I take my outdoors through the whole season and still really havenโ€™t had an issue with the early/mid fall come the last potential harvest time before the snow flies. These already have a great start dude, very nice๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘Œ

@TheBudWhisperer, that's what I did. I started my seed indoors in March and topped them before putting them out in May. :)

you're making this exciting man, you saw a bear on your way in? could be a bear that did that, those killing machines were probably just trying to help you top/LST ... but their fingers are too thick lol
BarrieGrower
BarrieGrowercommented5 years ago
@CRiSPrGrow, this is Northern Ontario, lots of wildlife. Last year it was a big bull moose and close. Most of the time they never bother and go away. Bears you don't trust. During hunting season they are never around, when you want to find them you can't. Haha. I've seen deer here before and most of the time you see sign they are arround. Tracks and sign of feeding. When they feed they naturally top bushes, specificallythe branches. The branches end up being bushier. Just like we do to our plants, same results.
CRiSPrGrow
CRiSPrGrowcommentedweek 125 years ago
some phenos just do that outdoors i think? or maybe they lost an early leaf that didnt turn into a branch? thing is sometimes what you see outside is what's happening inside the soil, so it could be those plants in the heat are digging deeper to find water... it's a grow mystery ! ๐Ÿš€
BarrieGrower
BarrieGrowercommented5 years ago
@TheBudWhisperer, I'm sure that was a factor, I dis not expect the quality of the soil to be so poor.
TheBudWhisperer
TheBudWhisperercommented5 years ago
@BarrieGrower, another thought there - you also said the soil was real tough and not ideal when you planted em right? Root migration/impediment might be an issue too. If the roots canโ€™t spread neither can the plants branches possibly??? Idk. Itโ€™s a thought
BarrieGrower
BarrieGrowercommented5 years ago
@Njanne, yes, I see yours are older. I don't think sunlight was the issue, more so the zone 4 early season weather has not cooperated. Thanks

And so it begins!๐Ÿ‘ runnโ€™n out to my buddies property this weekend for my outdoor run too. Itโ€™ll be nice to see em under the sun thatโ€™s for sure. Good luck dude - may the bugs back off and the critters be kind๐Ÿคž

@TheBudWhisperer, I tell you I hope they do ok. Can't check in on them for at least a couple of weeks. Got my fingers crossed ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž๐Ÿ‘
TheBudWhisperer
TheBudWhisperercommented6 years ago
@BarrieGrower, lol! And yeah any time Iโ€™m in ground outdoors a couple bags o promix and some compost guarantee a quality start๐Ÿ˜‰. All good regardless - theres a reason Itโ€™s Called weed. It grows like one too๐Ÿ‘
BarrieGrower
BarrieGrowercommented6 years ago
@TheBudWhisperer, Thanks, good luck on your grow. No bugs however, I did had a partridge follow me around, Funniest thing, I figure it must have had a nest close by. I will tell you I should have brought some top soil to plant them in. The native soil is not the best. Newbie mistake.

@Cannibalgardens, I'm sure it was a deer, they eat everybody's gradens too. Some people put high fences around their gardens to protect them. I will look around today to see if I can find some tracks.

@GrowBeforeHoe, Thank you. I figure if they will have around eighteen weeks of veg before the days get shorter. I'm hoping they grow into trees ๐Ÿš€ haha.
ghostface00132
ghostface00132commentedweek 125 years ago
Yah if you top now it will be fine. You will get more yield and more developed canopy on the plants. You have about 15 more days of growung before they hit flower. Some plants will hit flowering earlier depending on strain but wont hurt to top themgo 2 ro 3 nodes down from the top on those
BarrieGrower
BarrieGrowercommented5 years ago
@ghostface00132, thanks for the advise. I saw someone else make a comment simmilar to that. Have you grown mang plants outdoors?
TheBudWhisperer
TheBudWhisperercommentedweek 125 years ago
They look good dude๐Ÿ‘. And yeah, no advice for ya on the topping question. Never bothered/needed too my outdoors so no experience with it. Only thoughts are that it wouldโ€™ve been preferable to top earlier and get the full effect from it right? You do still have time though.... tough one! Lol

Looks like this year we will have a cold and rainy season unfortunately but it will be really interesting to see how they perform under these conditions until the very end. I will truly recommend you to top up the soil with some form of fertilizer to give it strength so It continue growing big and strong and because it's going to slowly leach into the ground you don't need to worry about over fertilizing blood meal , bone meal ,ocean mix are perfect for what you are doing end good luck with your grow
BarrieGrower
BarrieGrowercommented6 years ago
@Canadian, thank you, sounds lime a good idea. Next time I go I will do that, top up with a soil compost mix. Hopefully they are still fine.

Lookn good dude - still waitn in the weather for sure. Nothing goes in the ground for me before may 24.๐Ÿ‘
BarrieGrower
BarrieGrowercommented6 years ago
@TheBudWhisperer, That's the truth for sure. the way the weather has been it may be a toss up if it is warm enough. The forecast is still 6 degrees at night for that weekend, May have to wait another week, just going to wait and see.

Hi , I do no big defoilation on my outdoors, but trying to give them structure by topping, fimming etc. And for me most important , i give them a "cage" to be protectet from heavy winds and storms. its great too, to give them a transparent Roof for the Raining itime in Autum( northern europe) Here its very cold and humid in the middle of september, and if the raining weeks start there is a high risk of moldering buds I dont know your conditions , and hope you dont need cages and roofs to protect them If you want take a peep into my actual outdoors like Shaman, she got a cage and will get a roof to

Top that thing and watch your plant explode and watch your yields go up 30%!
BarrieGrower
BarrieGrowercommented5 years ago
@BigNate89, I really appreciate the tips and they make sense. Someone else mentioned topoing ti me too. Made it oit to see the plants and topped all of them before the mosquitoes got to be too much. I will go back tomorrow for nutrients. Cheers!
BigNate89
BigNate89commented5 years ago
I speak from experience my man! Works wonders for me. And if you really want to increase your yields. Drive a post in the ground about a foot away from your plants. You have to drive a post for each top, and then stretch it out and tie the tops to the posts. Thank me later! It'll increase your yields and save you hella time trimming it because all you'll have is tops!
BarrieGrower
BarrieGrowercommented5 years ago
@BigNate89, you say that with confidence. When I go this weekend to see them, if they look like they are doing good I will do that. Thanks! ๐Ÿ‘

BarrieGrowercommented5 years ago
@TheBudWhisperer, good to know. Was not really sure how much time is left for veg. I am here for a week so will give them one more shot of nutrients before I leave. Definitely will be out to show them some love more often.
TheBudWhisperer
TheBudWhisperercommented5 years ago
@BarrieGrower, oh for sure bud. Still at least another month+ of veg. Before transition so lots of time still to branch and spread๐Ÿ‘. Plants will do what they do๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ˜Ž
BarrieGrower
BarrieGrowercommented5 years ago
@TheBudWhisperer, interesting sorry to hear you are experiencing the same issue. I figure it had to be all the cold weather that caused it for my plants. I guess it is still early, so who knows we will see how it turns out. I am surprised how nice and thick the stalk is. To me that is a positive.
