I'm trying a new technique, soaking overnight in water then straight into eazy plug. Seems to work well. currently she's getting the spill light from my other plants which is about 180W of blue/red and 90W of QBelite96 quite a dose for a seedling while copping 700 ppm.
She started very strong and has continued, only Think Big has been stronger, but not my much. I have decided to let this one grow normally and see what she does.
Running at 700ppm
Not a lot to say here, true to form this is a powerful plant, I have no idea what she is going to do. The leaves are very wide but not causing too much shade. Towards the end of the week I decided to remove the lowest branches, sometimes these grow strong but I had a feeling they were going to be abandoned. by the plant. She looks like I've topped her but that's just a leaf tuck. I'm hoping for a normal classic Christmas tree shape. It's a bit chilly at night so I have a heater keeper the solution at 22C.
OK lots of excitement this week. I could stand by and watch no longer something had to be done, but what? Let's turn to the strange leaf problem first. Copper necrotic spots. WTF could this be, it's nothing to do with nutrients or pH that I'm pretty confident. Maybe it's just normal leaf dying. Whatever. I've supplied some photos where you can see a pattern of concentric rings. This tends to make it look more like some sort of mosaic virus, however if that were the case it would be everywhere.
It looks like something was spilled on the plant but that did not happen. I don't deem this a problem at all but it's very very puzzling. Anyway after mulling the situation it seemed like it was about time this giant leaves were gone. So all the giagantic huge chunky leaves were removed. I figured whatever they are making there's plenty more healthy leaves to carry on the work. Plus I think it induces some shock to the plant. It will definitely shift hormones around but what effect that has I don't know.
It looks like I've done a lot of work on this plant but I haven't really, just trying to see what she wants to do. So all that's happened is the first two branches that come out with the first baby leaves have been removed all other branches have developed normally.
Then the four branches from the first two growing nodes have been pinned down to give the plant a bit of space.
Edit: I've just pinned the lowest branches back a bit more and removed any fan leaves around the top as there seems to be plenty around.
I think that the strange coppery stuff on the large leaves is in fact normal leaf dying, but it's confusing due to the otherwise healthy appearance. I've left a lot of the big leaves because they are not covering anything but I did remove the biggest ones. Pulled the first two pairs of branches a bit lower, and I've began to pull the third set out a bit to give the main cola more space. I've cut off some spindly undergrowth so it doesn't get out of control, trying to leave branches that look heavier. Very curious to see where this one goes.
I think by next week I'm going to have a better idea about this plant.
She seems to be filling out quite well with a nice rounded shape, everything seems to be going smoothly, she's being fairly well behaved not too branchy although I have thinned her out a little bit.
She's looking very well rounded, a bit branchy but in control. Looks to be entering the flower flip over. I've been doing regular light defoliation as well as a bit of branch thinning. I'll let her go for another week and then probably do a major trim and defoliation.
Flowering is coming along slowly, not really any sign of action yet and it's 8 weeks, hard to believe that the three in a pot grow is only 3 weeks in front. She is developing into a well rounded nice shape, I've been in to trim a lot of undergrowth as she is very branchy. I'm still not sure how much to thin out. No rush yet though. It is getting a bit hectic now in the grow room and I'm entering the danger period for bud rot. I just have to be vigilant. Really looking forward to seeing what this girl does.
Going back filling in some missing weeks. The reason there were so many weeks missing was not much was happening other than a monstrous jungle, which was becoming extremely annoying.
I just harvested this less than two weeks ago and I'm coming back to fill in. Here we are at week 13, amazingly another 5 weeks further along and she still looks the same. I've been going in regularly and taking out lots of stuff but she just keeps on putting more weedy looking stuff out. I was getting to the point at this stage of just wanting to pull this plant and cut my losses. The pine aroma is also overwhelming. It's nice, but it reminds me too much of disinfectant.
It took quite some time to get here but finally they are looking sort of like normal heads. During the past few weeks I've gone in and removed armloads of branches numerous times with heavy defoliating to finally get some form. This would be a nightmare for a newbie. It was a nightmare for me. Now that I can see that it's going to produce a lot of resin I don't mind the fluffy form because I'd already earmarked this entire plant for squishing. However I was going to be in for a surprise... stay tuned.
OK, all the missing weeks except for #14 are done. I don't have any shots for that which accurately reflects my ambivalence to the plant while it was taking forever, but we got there in the end.
Welp, I can't believe I finally made it this was the situation around 18th Sept, and I chopped her down the next day. I left her sitting around for a day so I could admire her. She was incredibly annoying to grow but she looks quite attractive in the end. This is the first plant I have never topped, and ironically it just kept bushing out, it wouldn't mature, but instead kept growing little spindly stems off the main cola. The main cola in the end was completely subsumed by other side colas. The smell of pine is still extremely powerful and I was not expecting this to be the type of smoke I'd like, however I got a big surprise.
Harvest report coming up, then I'll be up to date except for my current Jedi Kush and Blackberry Kush... the madness never ends....
Not surprisingly she produced 12 zips of highly resinous delicious bud. The flowers are very loose bud completely covered in trichomes. I much prefer buds like this as they are less prone to bud problems plus they are easy to vape. I was not looking too forward to the strong pine taste, however I was in for a big surprise. The strong pine smell gives way to a much more subtle flavour with apricot and caramel overtones, and it's not even cured yet. She's similar in a way to the Short Stuff Pink Grapefruit but this one Is very clearly pine. The stone is clear and cerebral, and the branches are very thin and sativa like.
To get the most out of this she required lots and lots of pruning as well as defoliating. As I did not top her I had to spend even more time just pulling the side branches away from the main stem to give her a bit of air. Fortunately just when she was ready, the weather became unseasonably dry with RH at 40% otherwise I could not have let her go so long. In the end it was only 18 weeks but it felt longer.
She has immediately shot up the list to my favourite smoke yet. I'll be looking forward to the challenge of growing her, but this time I'll top her and keep the size down to a more manageable 8 zips hopefully. She is a wonderful smoke to blend with a Kush as well. I really like this smoke. Although growing her was a royal pain in the ass. I can see why not many people have much success with her. She seemed very prone to leave problems which I do not have, but I just ignored them because I defoliate anyway, whereas a lot of people would get worried and think it's a nute problem and fuck around, but really I know everything is fine as long as the roots are good.
I've already done a quick test run on the rosin and it's very smooth and light. This would be an excellent strain to press.
