Just harvested her today. Will update this shortly with some pictures and information! Super happy with my first grow and owe a lot to the people stopping in weekly to help! Just a mid dry update. Added some pictures. Seems to be drying at a reasonably slow rate. She still has a lot of smell which I am happy about. I thought for sure I'd end up with grassy/hay smelling bud but instead she is gassy, piney and earthy smelling as she dries. Another update on the dry period. Yesterday she lost her dank smell and the dreaded grassy smell appeared. She still has the dank smell when pressed between two fingers but currently I think the decomposing sugar leaves are causing the grass smell. I'm not too worried yet as it's only day 4/5 of the dry. Temps have been between 18-24c and RH has been 40-60%. Hoping to keep a slow steady dry going before jarring. Just finished trimming and jarring the buds. Definitely have a new respect for people that trim bud. My wife helped me but the trimming was not perfect. I honestly don't mind having some extra sugar leaves as they were relatively trichomey. The total weight was almost 22gs so I am very happy with that. The buds themselves are a big small and I think I will definitely improve on my next grow. They are already smelling great in the jar. I will post an update again after some curing and sampling. I haven't been tempted to smoke any yet even though it smells and feels great.

@Penguin, actually, you should not worry about anything. Really. This is your first grow. And for the first grow it looks better than my first experience. Do not give up and get upset. I will get yout first harvest.

Will nute burn have a big affect on my final yield? Are my buds likely to increase much in size? Leaves discolouring normal at this stage? Does she look likely to produce just popcorn bud at this point? Can I do anything about it? Also not many leaves on the plant?

A little nute burn won't affect your yield, but you are starting to lose leaves. Those leaves are what process nutrients to feed your flowers so losing a lot of leaves will lower your yield and quality. Your buds do have the ability to get much larger if the issues you have are corrected. The leaf coloring is not normal at this stage. And yes fortunately you can correct this and get her turned around. I saw that you just gave her a flush. This is definitely what she needed because I think your issues are from excess salts built up in your soil from all of the nutrients. After letting her dry out a lot then you want to feed only every third watering. So feed, water, water, repeat. This will help prevent nutrient and salts from building up around your roots. It also looks like your flowering stretch is about over so you want to back off the nitrogen as much as possible. The plant doesn't have much need for the grow big from here on. I would check out the fox farm feeding schedule and feed half the recommended dose on their chart every third watering. Also make sure you adjust the pH to around 6.5 to avoid other lockout problems. This should clear up your issues. Good luck finishing up your grow!

My Blurple apparently uses 230W actual draw but is advertised as 600W. If that 230W value is correct, does that suggest my new, much more expensive QB is not as good? Will it make a difference to the plants health? What are the benefits from the QB? Thanks!

I have a 150w quantum board from a chiness seller , it's a 3500k with UV and IR , it was supposed to replace my 2 50w ufo "burple" light that was just fine for flowering. But I decided to plug both my quantum and my ufo's and the result is amazing because the "burple" light are bringing more blue to the spectrum that is giving me short internodes (except when I choose a high distance between the lights ans the plants , then it is stretching ) and the plant are shorter but bushier and like I said if you put the light higher then you will work on the height. Stop talking bout me : What is the nenefits of a QB ? Better spectrum and basiclu the real full spectrum compared to the purple light ( mostly blue and red ) , they are producing less heat than the other light without using fans for heat disssipation which leans they are noiseless and the fact that they are emitting less heat can allow them to be placed lower in height. The QB are made of a lot of little leds that covers a bigger "area" than the others boards and so a better light repartition than a COB or a HPS that are more efficient in the middle than in the corners ( the light will reach the corners of the box easily ). The QB wattage is also ALWAYS the real draw compared to the purple light so what you ordering is what you get. It will make a difference to the plants health ( to me ) as the spectrum is a higher quality one with the QB and the light repartition is more efficient

Hi @Penguin it seems to me over-fertilization, phosphorus or potassium. there are certainly 2-3 weeks to go before it is ready, the buds will still get quite fat, wait about 5/6 days to feed it only with water, you can give a fattening booster and after a few days start making flush. good luck mate 👍

Runoff was at 2200PPM. I flushed her with 5L of pH 5.8 water. I got the runoff to 1000PPM where I left it. The pH was at 7 though and was higher than before the flush. Why is that? I always pH before watering. Also, is the flush going to cause trouble for her? I kind of panicked.

Hi there. First of all, according to your posts, you are growing in soil, so the pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0, not 5.8. Secondly, soil will buffer your pH, which is why our run off is higher. Third, soil runoff of 2200 PPM is quite low, rich soil mixes can have a run off as high as 10.000 PPM (I'm talking from experience); as the plant consumes the soil nutrients, the run off will drop weekly. If you flush the soil, you could end up with soil devoid of any nutrient for the plant to take in.

Optimal time to harvest? I can see a few amber trichomes but find it hard to tell the clear and cloudy apart in my best effort pictures. I'd love a stronger head high with couchlock being a secondary trait I'm looking for. Can I achieve this by harvesting at a certain time?

Well you want fewer amber trics at the expense of having some clear still around. Looks like another week, still more clear than one would like on board. If you are already in flush you timed it well. If not now would be good

@Afterglow, Yeah I was trying to look for other options for a lamp but in Brazil I am a bit limited to what's already in the country and the very high prices due to import costs sadly. At least I seem to have some things right, I have drilled holes into the bottom of my bucket for some drainage and air circulation at least haha.

Afterglowcommented5 years ago
@Penguin, growing is always a continuous learning process. You can’t even imagine how many lamps I tried. And even for the next grow I will have another lamp. Each time you will learn more and more. Until you try everything yourself, you will never understand what is happening, even if you read a large amount of literature. Regarding bucket. Better 3.8-4.2 liters for autoflowering strains. But it should have good drenage and some drilled holes on the sides at the bottom of the pot for better air exchange

Penguincommented5 years ago
@Afterglow, Thanks man, I'm trying to treat this as a learning experience to do better next time and if I can get a harvest from it too that is a massive bonus! As for the light I'm using, it states it's 600W but it definitely isn't. It's this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RWQ4B50/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) UFO and I'm fairly sure going from the reviews that it is probably not even pulling 200W from the wall. Unfortunately I don't have a lux or wattage meter to test anything for myself. I am considering going out to buy another spacer for my bucket to try and raise the light from her though if you think that could help?

@Afterglow, ah damn man, I'm not going to be back home until early morning. You think it would be too late now then? To be honest, I'll let her grow out naturally for my first grow then. I really should use it as an opportunity to learn the plant and what to look for to keep her healthy. I'm not bothered too much about yield right now, I would rather get a healthy plant to the end of the cycle and then use this knowledge on the next one. I definitely want to try topping after reading up on it though. Yeah I looked at that diary, it looks amazing! I think I will try to increase my grow space after this grow so I have easier access to the plant and more space for her.

@Penguin, and always use formula: PPM up / PH down: decrease the dose of nutritions PPM down / PH up: increase the dose of nutritions PPM stay / PH up: keep it going, everything is right
Afterglow
Afterglowcommented5 years ago
@Penguin, 1. You will never change PH of soil by flushing with pure water, even with corrected PH. It is always bad idea to give pure water in coco-soil. Always add nutritions but with low concentration. 2. PPM on your stage should be not over 1000 US PPM (there is also EC PPM) in drainage. 3. To decrease PPM in drainage - just give half of nutritions you gave previously. 4. To encrease of decrease PH - use coefficient 1.2, but not lower 5.5 and higher 7.0 for the final result. For example your drainage shows 7.1 PH. 7.1/1.2 = 5.9. Or shows 5.7 and you want higher: 5.7 * 1.2 = 6.9. After two days PH in drainage will correct.

@Penguin,you can water again if you’re sure you wanna keep her another week but not to much because at the end they don’t use to drink like in full flower..
Penguin
Penguincommented5 years ago
@Afterglow, Yeah I was thinking of a staggered harvest actually. I think I'll let her fade out a little longer before deciding what to do with her. It's tempting to let her go a little longer to see if she swells up any more in the next few days but its equally tempting to harvest her now because it's smelling amazing. I keep telling myself that it's been 11 weeks, how hard is it to wait 1 more haha. I'll have to sleep on a decision like this because I am so indecisive! I'll also have to water her again if I do decide to let her run a bit longer as it's been 4 days without.

@Penguin,if you are not sure, you can take harvest partly just cutting top buds.

The explanation for your high ph level is simple:it’s because ppm is to high due to salt buildup.when you put water in at ph 6,5 and there are salt buildups in your pot,the salt binds with the acid you add to your water and becomes useless thus the ph level rises in your runoff but this is not an indicator for ph level of your soil.just keep watering at the right ph level and no nutrients until your runoffs ppm is back in range and you will see your ph of the runoff will be oke to Happy growing and will follow this one ✌️🌱🔥

@Penguin,photoperiodes are always a better choice when you grow indoors to my opinion.they use a lot less energy in flower because of the 12/12 light schedule..and yield more and are bit more potent then the auto gens. But I have to say my auto’s are in my tent at the moment because of the low night temps(6c)and I can give a few extra hours of light this way.as soon as they can stay outside I’m gonna start a diary with Zamnesia’s runtz indoors looking forward to that strain 😬😬😬🌱

Looks like she got a bit heat or light stress with the leaves toccoing, what your temp and rh in you grow space at plant hight, could also be your fan is it directly blowing on the plant if so point it to blow off the side of your grow area, or move it above the plant not directly against it
Shaunmc57
Shaunmc57commented5 years ago
@Penguin, yeah keep a check on the humidifier as if the pot fabric it will transfer water and the plant wind be getting the nutrients it needs as you wind be feeding enough, just remember to feed till you get a bit run off to stop salt build, and always pH and EC your feeds
Penguin
Penguincommented5 years ago
@Shaunmc57, She is definitely looking better to me the day after the LST! I did some more this morning because she already spread out like you mentioned. Yeah the watering is my next thing to get to grasps with. It feels like forever since I actually watered her but she doesn't seem to be thirsty from those pictures? I'm convinced the humidifier is providing the sides of the fabric pot with enough moisture that it won't dry out... Does that seem like something I need to be careful of? And so far the RH barely gets to 50% so hopefully with that and the strong airflow the mold shouldn't be an issue (I hope)
Shaunmc57
Shaunmc57commented5 years ago
@Penguin,when starting LST it doesn't look pretty but just keep going with it after a few days of tieing down branches she will just continue to grow wider and open up for more light to penatrate down , and for watering water when you soil is starting to dry but to water less than tomuch or you will cause root rot from not getting oxygen, when using the humidifier just keep a eye on you rh as when the plant start to get bigger and flowering it will cause mold as long as the rh is around 50 or below during flowering you will be fine

Your new QB light is hands down much better. This late into the grow is doubtful that it will have any significant impact in your yield and it could stress your plants. Now what are the benefits of the QB compared to low quality LEDs? Low quality LEDs, almost always over drive the leds, giving you more watts, but less efficiency, putting out more heat and lowering the life expectancy of your unit. For example, I have a DIY light currently driven to 100 watts, but I could set it to consume 150 watts, but for a gain of only 20% more light.

Hey how goes the battle😎 Plants look good👍 I harvested a northern lights auto, took 81 days from sprout to harvest, turned into some descent smoke👌 I found this strain to be very fussy, needed lots of time to recover from LST, topping and defoliation. Luck and Grow Big!!

@Penguin,Hey good morning Most autos will finish between 60-90 days, there are some that take longer. Depends on how much stress the plant goes through early on in veg. My northern lights auto, also my first one took 81 days form sprout. Rule of thumb for autos is less is more, check out my diaries, I did a lot better in my second grow, but had a lot of help from the people on GROW DIARIES👍👍👍 everything is an experiment Later!!

@northernMike, Hey! Thanks for the comment man. This is my first grow so I am doing lots wrong and learning from it (hopefully). I think my girl has been really patient with me so far but as of a few days ago I am starting to get some fading on the leaves and I am unsure if its a natural fade which is expected late in a grow or if its too early as she definitely looks like she has a ways to go before getting close to harvest. What do you think? How much did you manage to yield from yours? Mine is looking very light on the bud front sadly but its all for experience. My next grow was supposed to be a couple more autos but just found out the seller of the seeds ran out so I am going with some foto periods instead. Hopefully the learning curve won't be too steep coming from an auto!

Not sure if its the same or not but i was mixing nutes like 1/4 recommended strength so when it started budding the lower leaves all yellowed. I started mixing nutes to half strength and it helped. Now to wait and see how it affects the end result.
Athos
Athoscommentedweek 35 years ago
Burnt? No. Overfed? Yes, see that dark green color? that's nitrogen excess. With that much soil, you should not need feeding in quite a few weeks. It is much safer to wait until you see some deficiencies before feeding and autos sometimes get enough from the soil without needing aditional nutes. also, those wavy leaves indicate too much water.
