Got busy the last few weeks and wasn't able to update, so will be updating 3 consecutive weeks. This week I saw some significant stretch in Lucy. She shot up from about 15" to over 20." I did release all her LST bonds so she could grow wild. Still not showing much bud development tho. Mary also gained a few inches and her buds are starting to come in.

Grow Questions

When I checked the run off from this weeks watering - PH was 7.6 and TDS was reading 1975ppm. I had added Dolomite Lime to the soil as some had recommended. Could this cause the high PH levels? Any suggestions on how to bring it down? Worried about nutrient lockout. Thanks!

Lime will raise the ph. Are you ph’ing your water down when watering? I’d ph the water down to 5.5-6.0. That should help bring down the ph in your soil. Good luck!

Can anyone help sort out the issue I'm seeing on the lower leaves? I think I'm either between nutrient burn or potassium deficiency? I did up the nutrients a bit this week when I saw yellowing, but also have had high runoff pH the whole grow. Though haven't seen any other issues.

First of all, without clear pictures of the affected leaves I can't be sure of what exactly it is. A deficiency at the end of the stretch, beginning stages of bud production is normal, if it shows on the lower leaves with dark / metallic blue spots and withering it is phosphorous deficiency, sometimes it also comes with red / purple petioles (stems attached to leaves); chlorosis (yellowing) starting at the tip and edges of the lower leaves with rust spots close to the edge of the leaves if it is potassium deficiency. If it looks like homogeneous yellowing with no spots, it's nitrogen deficiency. During stretch, some nitrogen deficiency is quite normal, since the plant explode with growth; P and or K deficiency after stretch is normal too, it just means that the feeding needs to be stronger or done more often). Your bloom nute is 2-4-4, I would up the dose or frequency, what is the EC / PPM of your feedings? At this stage I usually feed 1.3 EC / 650 PPM. As for soil run off PPM's, don't pay that much attention to it, it's just a way to see how exhausted your soil is and how much nutes your plant is taking related to your feeding. Mine starts at 10.000 PPM (yes 10 thousand PPM) and when it's at 5.500 PPM my plants show definitive signs of deficiencies and it is when I have to start feeding; at the end of the flowering stage, even with feedings, my run off PPM is between 1.000 PPM and 3.000 PPM, as long as you run off PPM is not increasing you are good to go.

Amazing what small fan will do to the over all strength of the plants stalk and leaves. That's great that worked for you.

Glad to see Lucy doing well. I would imagine part of her uniqueness comes from being trifoliate. A couple things I've learned over my few weeks growing and monitoring is that if a leaf has noticable/significant damage, it won't recover. Wilting or lite discoloration yeah, they come back. Maybe even wrinkles or puffiness, but not spoting or browning. If leaves look, to me, like they can't come back, I will pinch them. I can't see a need to keep them around to suck extra nutes, energy, and life from the rest of the plant. That being said, I don't like the idea of hurting my plant. We could sit and argue about the fact that it's "just a plant", but the truth is, I care about it. I only defoliated when necessary and I feel that the plants best interest is at stake. Hope all goes well. Mary is looking good! Lush and full of life. I battled with FIMing or topping and went with topping. I'm interested to see how your FIMing goes. Cheers!

@Skill_Murray, lol same! My wife got irritated the other night because I won't take care of her plants the way I do mine. She seems to think I love Agnes more than I love her.

@Horantu, totally agree. I want to do as little harm as possible and just let them do their thing with a little guidance. Nature knows the way. And I'm right there with ya, I feel for them for sure. My lady gets annoyed that I sometimes give them more attention. I say I have two kids now! Three if you count the dog haha

Hello. Normaly as I know we should not worry about ph when the water is good and we grow on soil. Your watering volume is very high, if you are giving them so much water maybe this is the only problem and you should take care of not to over water them. Why you let the water run off? You do that every time? Are you sure that is needed? I never do that. Water run off to me means over watering and is no good for the plants. Anyway to me seems they grow fine. Welldone! :)

@Skill_Murray, I also try to learn, so I also enjoy it. I never give them a lot of water because I want them to dry often so I can make three or more waterings per week, that means two or more feeds per week and i also see that plants react better on this timeplan than to heavy water them and then wait four or more days to dry. They look they grow well but don't waste their time , I think that your nutrients are so low and you should go higher the sooner possible. Do not be afraid, to my experience is better if i burn a little the plant early than i won't harvest more. :)

@flyingfish, very true. When I first started, everything I read said to water to 15-20% runoff. So I've been giving them about a gallon each which would last 5 or 6 days before needing another drink. Always checking the soil to be sure it was dry/slightly damp. They haven't seemed to show signs of overwatering yet, but I'm actually thinking about dialing it back now so I can feed smaller amounts more frequently going into flower and manage things better. Thanks for the advice!

They're looking amazing! I see what you mean bout the height differential! When I was beginning I did (high effort, LST etc) sog for this. Even now, I try to pop extra seeds so that I can keep the largest for a mother and cull the smallest. I hear that people who can make enough clones or have enough seeds pull the largest ones because they cause more problems than the yield is worth. Evening out the canopy across the tent will be a worthwhile endeavour in your future =)

@Jaindoh, for sure! I think I'm going to try a scrog on the next run. Lucy has been growing strange from the start. She's more of a science experiment at this point. haha

First grows are scary, but exciting -- liked and followed! I'm going to guess the lower leaves wilting like that is windburn. Either way, the big lowers are sucking energy and water they're not giving a good return on. However, the real threat is fans that actually shade other nodes, particularly any fan shading multiple nodes. As per always, for new growers, Nebula Haze's articles at Grow Weed Easy cover all the basics the best. http://www.growweedeasy.com/cannabis-plant-training http://www.growweedeasy.com/defoliation If you have any other questions, feel free to ask =)

@Jaindoh, right on. I've been reading Grow Weed Easy from the jump. Def a ton of great info there. Yeah thats why I tied down some of the bigger fans to consolidate and get them out of the way from the lower nodes that were starting to form branches and reach up. I'll ride it out and see how it works for now. Thanks for the advice!

@Jaindoh wrote “However, the real threat is fans that actually shade other nodes...” This is such a.fun controversial topic! I believe flowers need space to grow, and that is the point of the stretch. Pistils share a function similar to a bug’s antenna, and they can sense if there is space for more growth. A dense canopy can inhibit flower growth, but I believe it has more to do with room and air flow than light to the nodes, which are not photosensitive. Not that the reason matters too much if the result of defoliation is effective. Just fun talking and learning. Best wishes for a great harvest.
Stick
Stickcommentedweek 136 years ago
Hi @Skill_Murray! On the first sight this looks like a Potassium deficiency. But looking at the amount of nutrients you gave her for the last weeks I think giving more nutrients now will not help. My guess is that you created a nutrients lockout / salt build-up, her roots can't absorb nutrients anymore (especially Potassium). As an emergency move I would flush the soil with plain pH'd water for a few days and test the runoff pH level. If she looks better, give her a good meal with appropriate pH/EC levels and see how it goes. I'll be around, keep us up-to-date and happy growing! 👊

@@Athos, right on man. Thank you! I'll gas up the nutes and see how it goes. I've also only been feeding twice a week, I might try start getting 3 in and hopefully help them finish strong.
Athos
Athoscommented6 years ago
@Skill_Murray, for soil that run off PPM is quite low, for me it's a sign that your soil is exhausted of nutrients, yes I would up the nutes to 900 PPM. Whatever is buffering the pH to the high 7, there's very little you can do without risking the plant. Peat is known to be acidic, but you can't mix it in the soil without disturbing the roots, keep it in mind for future reference.
