In my previous grows, I was submerging the seeds in a cup of water for a day or two and then placed them in a damp/wet paper towel and allowed the tap root to grow an inch or so before placing them into my substrate mix. Now I just placed the seeds in just-watered substrate and effectively skipped doing the paper towel germination method in favor of something less complicated and involved with the same results. I decided to start my two ladies along with another nine Carolina Reaper seeds and hopefully those pop soon (I've read peppers take longer, we'll see). I have not watered since initially making the substrate damp and placing the seeds in.
These two ladies will be my first photoperiod grow. I am planning on main-lining these two. Excited to see where I can take them!
Setup is currently only under the SF1000 (100W) that I've used for all my previous grows. Decided to increase grow space a bit and purchase a TS1000 (150W) that I can't wait to use alongside my older light. I'll start using it when I transplant the WWs into larger pots.
Of the two seeds I started off with, one lady was struggling to remove the seed shell and open up. Decided to try and spray some water on the shell and check back after a few hours, but I wasn't seeing any results. Then I carefully removed the shell and noticed one of the cotyledons has turned completely brown and looks dead, while the other seems mostly healthy. Will keep an eye on her in hope of new growth. Figured I should start another WW seed in case she doesn't make it.
Wanda is looking happy and healthy with continual growth of her first set of new leaves.
Wilma just started showing new growth and will hopefully not die on me now, just need the growth to continue.
The remaining cells in the tray are for Carolina Reaper seeds to be germinated. I started germination of some self-harvested seeds from a Carolina Reaper that were, at the time of germination, a couple months old, but after not seeing any new growth from the seeds (no taproots) I thought maybe I fucked up harvesting and drying the seeds. Ordered some new seeds online from Puckerbutt, and read some information they provide on growing these seeds. Turns out germination time for these seeds is a few weeks, which seems very long considering cannabis seeds are ready to go in a few days. Decided to start germination over with the new seeds from Puckerbutt and leave them be for a few weeks - hopefully will get some Carolina Reaper seedlings soon.
Wanda is growing healthy and strong, she just started showing her new growth tips and her first set of leaves are starting to stretch past the size of her container.
Wilma is just starting to show her first set of leaves with only one cotyledon surviving after she struggled to remove the seed shell.
The last seed I began germination on (in case of Wilma) is yet to break soil. On day 9 of the seed being placed in substrate. Don't think the seed will break soil, the shell has been cracked and the taproot has been showing (but not protruding) from the seed for about 7 days now. We'll see if she somehow makes it through.
Starting giving the seedlings a reduced amount of FloraMicro and FloraGro for their feeding.
Wanda has been showing steady growth since day 1, while Wilma is looking like she will bounce back from her initial struggle of removing her seed shell and with only one cotyledon. With the recently added nutrients, I expect them to grow much more this week.
Wanda has started to get in the way of Wilma in the seedling trays, so I decided to transplant her into a 5 gallon fabric pot. I placed her under the TS1000 (24 inches away) and we'll let her bounce back from my shitty transplant job (really struggled to get her out of the tray cell). First time using mycorrhizae powder during a transplant, hoping to see minimal shock.
The seed I began germination on (in case of Wilma didn't recover) never broke soil and won't be tracked anymore.
The rest of the cells in the starter tray are Carolina Reaper seeds that I'm trying to germinate. So far very unsuccessful, I'll keep watering them when the top soil is dry. I might have to try germinating more seeds when it's a bit warmer and more humid in my area. Ridiculous how I can't seem to get these seeds started.
Wanda is experiencing some shock. I didn't do a good job of transplanting her without damaging some of her roots. She was wilting dramatically the morning after transplant, but in the afternoon started to bounce back up. She's lost her first set of leaves after the cotyledons. Not sure what to do but wait it out and hope she doesn't die on me. I should have waited until the two seedlings were very much in each other's way and hope Wanda's roots were much more established by then.
Wilma has been filling out and is growing great for her rough start.
Wanda has not been showing strong signs of quickly rebounding after transplanting (more than a week now). Her newer growth is continuing to grow slowly, but her older growth looks like it might die off (1st of leaves after cotyledon did completely dry up).
Wilma has at this point surpassed Wanda in growth.
After about 3 weeks, the Carolina Reaper seeds have begun to break soil and I can't wait to see how these will grow for me.
Decided to transplant Wilma into her final home. Her root ball was well established and she was much easier to transplant versus Wanda (I should have waited for her to better establish her roots). Wanda is starting to bounce back and is looking much better.
I need to wait for them to grow more before I chose which nodes will be the mains during mainlining. As they have been growing great this week, I finally topped them for their first time.
Have about 5 Carolina Reapers finally breaking soil, decided to began germination on more of these seeds. I also started a freebie seed from Seedsman called Auto Lemon (I think its a Lemon Skunk auto) and one of the two seeds I found in my first Amnesia auto plant (she gave me two seeds due to "hermie-ing" at the end of grow).
The ladies are responding well to their first topping. I am noticing that their leaves are praying much higher than they were previously.
Recently got a new 2 ft by 4 ft tent to place everything in.
Excited to see how the ladies respond to mainlining. I decided to clone only Wilma and will see if my first attempt is successful. Placed her cutting in a cup as soon as I cut. A few hours later I noticed I put way too much water and had to remove a lot of it.
Wilma is stretching a lot everyday and will need to get topped again in a week at most for her to have a total of 4 tops.
I have noticed Wanda's main stem is noticeably thinner and weaker in a certain area, so I attempted to add a support. A few days later the area seemed to stiffen up and I removed the support. I am hoping she naturally just grows and thickens her main stem up. Not sure why it happened.
Wilma was topped a second time (she has 4 tops now) on day 51 and full defoliated on day 56. I am trying to get the cuttings to produce roots and get some clones of this girl.
Wanda is growing at a much slower pace than her sister. Not sure what to do with her. Decided to top her a second time and hope she stretches.
Wilma is doing great. Her first cutting was placed in soil after 10 days in water with small roots starting to form. Still no signs of roots on the second cuttings.
Wanda is falling behind in growth. She is just not growing as vigorously as her sister. I'm not sure what's wrong, might have to let her veg outside in a bigger container and see how big she can get.
I'm hoping I can successfully clone Wilma a few times and fill the tent.
Wilma has been topped 3 times so far for a total of 8 tops. She will be topped once more in order to achieve 16 tops soon. I've left some nodes to try and clone her. So far I've tried to take clones twice now. The first cutting seems to be surviving in soil now. The second cuttings were too short to begin with and decided to call it quits on them after I forgot about them for a day and they dried up entirely.
Wanda is now showing much more vigorous growth. She has been topped 2 times so far for a total of 4 tops. Hope she can catch up to Wilma.
I transplanted all of the Carolina Reaper seedlings into larger containers as they were outgrowing the starter tray cell. I have one tray of cherry tomatoes, one tray of serrano/mixed peppers (mixed seeds from last years harvest), and one tray with Carolina Reapers. All vegetables will be placed outside once temperatures are steadily over 55F at night.
Photoperiods seem to be the way to go for me from now on. My two (and only) previous grows were with autoflowers and I could have significantly benefited from choosing when the plant was ready to flower. I mainly wanted to try main-lining to achieve large thick colas with minimal (or no) larfy buds. I did stunt Wanda during transplant and Wilma only had one cotyledon as a seedling due to the shell being stuck.
Wilma is doing great. Decided not to top her another time and will leave her with 8 main colas. I am eager to see how her buds will form. I took off 8 nodes to try and clone. My first cutting from her has developed roots now after a few weeks. This time I immediately placed the cuttings in soil after a water dip followed by a rooting hormone powder dip. On day 75 I did some light super-cropping on the 4 outermost colas as they were much larger than the 4 inner colas. I then also bent 2 of the 4 inner colas (on opposite sides) to the outside. The smallest 2 smallest colas remained unbent and should catch up in growth.
Wanda has been growing strong. She was struggling but seems to be on track now. She was topped another time for a total of 8 mains.
The other vegetables (peppers and tomatoes) in the tent are growing great. They'll be placed outside when the weather gets better.
Wilma's shape is being formed with the addition of a modified tomato cage ring. I pulled six of her colas towards the bottom ring and left two colas alone. I have been lollipopping the six colas being pulled towards the bottom ring. I plan on continuing vegetative growth until her colas reach the top ring.
Wanda is finally thickening up her stems and looks to be stretching into the shape I want to achieve. She appears to be only a week or two behind Wilma now. Accidentally snapped one of her eight colas while training her on Day 80, leaving her with only seven colas now 😪. I also slightly tore one of her colas at the knuckle area while training. I don't even think she needed tape at that joint to heal, but I put some electrical tape on her anyways. I will try and train her colas in the same way as Wilma, except she will only have one cola growing in the middle. Welp Day 84 brought another snapped cola, I just don't learn. I placed another modified tomato cage on her and started training her with that instead.
Wilma's first clone (first cutting) has developed many more roots but is yet to really show more vegetative growth. I assume it's because her roots need to develop more. Wilma's third cuttings, a total of eight cuttings, have been in soil for nine days now. There are still no signs of roots reaching the edges of their containers. All cuttings still look healthy and green. I have been misting the cuttings daily.
Wilma is filling out her tomato cage beautifully. The eight colas have been trained to there mostly final spot and will be allowed to shoot up now. Her first clone is doing great and looks happy and should continue to grow at this point. Her other cuttings are starting to show roots along the sides of the containers I placed them in. I've lost two of those eight cuttings so far.
Wanda's colas still need to be trained to their final spots before I allow them to shoot up. I accidentally snapped one of her colas completely clean off and couldn't tape it back up. I then accidentally snapped another, but this one didn't come off entirely so I taped her up and she has shown to persevere through the trauma I caused.
I decided to move Wanda and Wilma (and her clones) to my older grow tent (36" X 20" X 62") to allow the vegetables I am growing to be placed in larger containers. My ladies are only under 100W and the vegetables are under 150W. I plan on keeping it this way until I can place all the vegetables outside. I am thinking my ladies need another week or two of veg before I flip them to flower. This will be the longest veg I've ever done, but it was mostly due to my mistakes causing some stunted growth and pulling clones from Wilma to allow Wanda time to catch up.
My ladies are growing and bushing out amazingly right now. I will let Wilma reach the edges of her tomato cage before I flip them to flower. Wanda is only about 2 inches shorter but is filling out great. I am happy with the shape they're taking and can't wait to see how their flowers form. They are only under the 100W light for now as my other light is currently tied to vegetables I am growing in a separate tent.
The latest clones I have taken from Wilma are rooting and it won't be long until I transplant them into larger containers for them to veg in. The first larger clone has been topped and should show more node growth soon. These clones won't be flowered with the mother as I want to allow them time to properly veg.
Finally decided to switch these ladies into flower and changed their light schedule to 12/12. The ladies first day with this schedule was on day 100. I started to lollipop more of their small node growth that is almost completely underneath other foliage.
I moved Wilma's clones into another tent with an 18/6 schedule to allow them to veg properly. The cuttings were taken on day 71 and seem to be rooting healthily and vigorously. My plan is to mainline these as well, but I'll need to empty out most of the tent to transplant them into bigger pots.
On day 104, I switched the lights and placed the ladies on the flower schedule under the Mars Hydro 150W light and the vegetables/clones under the SpiderFarmer 100W light. I'm thinking this will be how I'll keep them for the rest of the grow (vegetables will go outside soon).
Wanda and Wilma are stretching a lot now as they reach the top of their tomato cages. I am seeing a lot of pistils starting to pop on the tops of both ladies. They seem to be doing great.
I just transplanted the remaining Wilma clones into larger pots and they should begin to develop stronger root systems. I plan on topping these clones soon and hope to manifold them as well. The Wilma clones are on an 18/6 schedule. I took the cuttings from Wilma on day 71, so they are at the moment 36 days into their growth. The very first cutting (now clone) was taking earlier in Wilma's growth, but doesn't seem to be much ahead of the younger cuttings (see clones picture, top left clone).
Decided to move the oldest Wilma clone outside and we'll see how she develops. I topped all the remaining Wilma clones that are under the 100W light.
The ladies are filling out their tent beautifully now. None of my previous grows was I able to almost entirely fill out the tent like it is now. White pistil hairs are popping everywhere on both ladies now. They are just starting to produce a slight smell. Excited to see her flowers grow and what aroma she'll give off soon.
On day 115 I decided to lollipop the ladies further up as my hygrometer was reading a max of 78% RH. I'm also thinking the offshoots were stealing some nutrients from the "main" colas.
I only have 4 Wilma clones to look after now as I gifted 2 away. I think 4 plants will be the max I'll be able to maintain under the 100W light. I cleaned up their lower node growth and left them with what will be the base of their manifold.
The ladies are starting to get frosty and smelly now. Can't wait to see how their colas grow.
The Wilma clones were getting to be too big for those small pots, so I decided to transplant them into 3 gallon plastic pots. Their roots will enjoy more room. I'm happy with the growth these have been having under the 100W light.
The ladies are filling up with trichomes now and starting to fatten up buds. Fingers are getting sticky now when touching around their flowers. I hope I am able to fatten all the colas sticking up and out, should be able to beat my best harvest to date.
The clones are growing at much faster rate now. All clones are topped for 4 colas, although none of the tops are growing symmetrically anymore. I might add some netting instead of using tomato cages to train these.
I am happy with the growth both ladies in flower have been having. Their flowers are producing good amounts of trichomes and they're all mostly clear right now. I think I'll have another month at most for these ladies to finish, but I'm going to gauge when to start flushing and harvest the flowers by having almost all cloudy and some amber trichomes on the top buds. I am expecting the buds to fatten some more and frost out more too.
These clones are off! They are starting to form the manifold base I've been training them towards. I have some symmetrical growth nodes and other asymmetrical growth nodes, kinda annoying but should be manageable. Excited for all these plants I have growing at the same time!!
The buds on the ladies 52 days into flower look and smell great. I would say Wilma's is smelling heavy earthy and slightly citrus-piney and Wanda smells more citrus-piney than earthy if at all. Some of the cola tips on Wilma are showing a slight fade/nutrient burn, I'm not sure really what it is but I'll confirm no spreading occurs. Their trichomes still appear mostly clear, I'd say around 90% clear and 10% cloudy with almost no amber ones.
These Wilma clones have been really gaining mass and responding well to mainline training. On day 79 for them, I defoliated and stretched the growth nodes closer to their final positions using scrap electrical wires and thin rope to tie/hold the growth down. On day 81 for them, I defoliated more and was able to position the colas into their final positions. I am noticing one clone is growing much slower. All clones are trained for 8 colas now. I haven't decided if I should use netting to support their colas or if I'm going to try the tomato cage again. I am feeding the clones 5 mL of CalMag, 4 mL of FloraMicro, 4 mL of FloraGro, and 1 mL of FloraBloom about every watering. Around once a week only 5 mL of CalMag.
The clone that's outside is 106 days old. I placed her outside when she was 64 days old. She seems to have adjusted well to the outside elements. I have been mainlining her and she is currently at 16 main colas. This clone has almost no symmetrical growth nodes. She is getting less babied than the plants that are inside, but this one has all summer to grow before she flowers. I'm expecting her to become a huge bush with such an extended vegetative growth period.
I finally have an update on the Carolina Reapers I started with Wanda and Wilma. The reapers aren't all the same age, so I will just say they are all about as old as the oldest one at 123 days. I took a picture of the largest pepper I could find on the plants, but there are a lot of small ones starting to appear everywhere. Super excited to make some sauce with these lol
I believe the brown spots appearing my ladies top colas is some sort of nutrient burn symptoms along with the brown tips that they start to pronounce more as of recently. There appears to be about the same amount of cloudy trichomes as there are clear trichomes with a lot more amber trichomes depending on where you look on the colas. I only fed Wilma and Wanda twice with the FloraNectar I just bought to try out. Because of the trichomes appearing about 50/50, I think I'm about a week or so away from harvesting these.
To address the nutrient burn I think I'm having and in preparation for harvest, I went ahead and flushed Wilma and Wilma with 4 gallons of water each. At 2 gallons, the runoff of was at about 2000 PPM (for reference my tap water is at about 200 PPM and my nutrient water is at about 1200 PPM). At 4 gallons, the runoff was at about 1400 PPM. I took a picture of the runoff water and its very dark. I think I'll flush a few more times and try to bring the runoff down to around 500 PPM.
The Wilma clones look great. They might benefit from also having the 150W Mars Hydro light currently being used by Wilma and Wanda. Their training is pretty much done until they start stretching up and I get a netting.
Wanda and Wilma are a few days away from harvest at this point. So to prepare for harvest and because I was noticing signs of nutrient burn, I have now done 3 flushes to each lady. The first flush was last week. The second flush was 4 gallons of water each and measured around 1000 PPM. The third flush was 2 gallons each and still measured around 1000 PPM. I want to get the runoff closer to 500 PPM before I begin 48 hours of darkness and then chop them down. I will do another final flush with as much tap water as needed to bring the runoff down to 500 PPM.
Still seeing pistil hairs popping on Wilma on almost all colas, while Wanda has very little if any new pistils popping. Trichomes look more cloudy now, with more amber than before.
I have always noticed a leaf on Wilma was curled strangely and yellowed, but never gave it much of a second thought and never documented it. I knew mosaic virus was a thing, but thought it was too rare to appear. Well I was glancing around the Wilma clones and realized 1 of the clones has a much more pronounced curl and yellowing. It's definitely mosaic virus and I definitely have no idea how it got into my garden... oh well. I am not going to separate it or remove it since it never seemed to spread or effect the growth of the mother plant. Neat to see it and identify it I guess.
On day 169 I did the final flush on both ladies. I went through about 6 gallons per lady. The final runoff measured at around 400 PPM. Right around where I wanted to be. In my previous grows I did not flush as thoroughly, I'll see if I can even tell any difference and if it's worth it.
I started the 48 hour period of darkness of day 171 (flower for 72 days).
I chopped and hung the buds on day 173. I expect it to take about 7 days for the stems to start snapping when bent.
Wanda weighed in at 659 grams on harvest day with stems and leaves. Wilma weighed in at 731 grams on harvest day with stems and leaves. I am estimating I'll end up harvesting and jarring over 15% of the bud wet weight. So around 200 grams. I ended up trimming all the large fan leaves before I hung the flowers to dry. My hands got very sticky while just handling the stems and cutting leaves.
Will update once the buds are dry and I've tried some of the bud. Can't wait!
So far the flower has been smoking and burning very cleanly immediately after drying.
I like the structure of the buds and how even I was able to keep my garden's canopy with mainline training. I had much less shake and the larfy buds I did get are denser than before. I got lazy and didn't trim these and they're so far great with joints and blunts. In the future (on these Wilma clones) I plan on lollipopping further up the main colas to try and increase the overall density of the mains.
These 2 plants that I started from seed were under 1 or 2 lights throughout the grow. For the last 10 or more weeks of flower, I put them under only the 150W light. I needed to separate my clones.
I still have 4 Wilma clones in veg under both 100W and 150W lights. I also have 1 Wilma clone outside a few weeks into flower now.
