I started noticing some dark area's on my roots in a few spots so I went into a research deep dive looking for solutions. One of the big ones was the water temperature. I've had two pretty successful DWC grows back 7+ years ago and I never came across the importance of solution temperature back then. I spent a rediculous amount of time looking into the most affordable method of cooling my solution temperature, and the best I could come up with on short notice is the ice bottle method.
I have put my bucket in a water bath in a container. I can drop the ice bottles in the water bath so I am not having to place them directly inside my solution bucket. The water bath itself has brought my temperatures down within acceptable ranges (68* or below). I also bought a cheap digital aquarium probe to more easily monitor the solution temp. (using the ph pen to monitor temp. was way to much of a hassle). So far I've had to use very little ice.
Also, I originally used clear aquarium air hoses to my air stones. I was afraid this was causing too much of a light leak so I had some spare black hoses (I used to use them for an old C02 tank setup) that I'm now using for my air stones.
Lastly, there is a slim chance that the brownish color I'm seeing on the roots in certain area's is where they are rubbing up on the air hoses. Because I'm using both Roots Excelurator and Liquid Karma, I got a brown film buildup on the air hoses. Maybe that is rubbing off on the roots and causing the discoloration. I think this is the least likely scenario but I do believe could be possible. Better safe than sorry though.
These pictures were taken this morning during my weekly water change. I did not up the nuts this week because I'm not really seeing the plant taking in any nuts yet. My ppm has steadily climbed over the last week (not too bad though). I'm leaving the nuts at the same level I did last week.
So far, the leaf discoloration is only on the first three sets of leaves: onesies, 3-leaf, and first 5-leaf. All the new growth past the first 2 sets of true leaves is looking healthy. Also, this plant is way stocky/bushy compared to what I'm used to. I think this may be due to the light I'm using. I'm used to using a 8-light T5 ballast. I think I'm getting more lumens and my plant isn't stretching as much as what I've experienced in the past.
Is this root rot? I have fixed my temps in the last 4 days. I am already using H&G Roots Excelurator. Is Hydroguard better or should I use both? I also tried fixing light leaks. Any other suggestions?
You should be using both. As the last person said root accelerate nutrient helping grow roots faster, while hydrogaurd is a beneficial bacteria that will keep your roots healthy during harsher environment. Things like slightly higher res temps.
@PigBearMan, I'm sorry to hear that man. Most of my family is from the southern states so I understand exactly what your saying. Luckily I'm in a fairly temperate area, although the winters can be harsh. However, I'm growing indoors so it's much easier to deal with than high humidity and temps.
@Bertoxxulous, where i live the temperatures and the RH are pretty shitty. Summer, 28°C and 65% RH. Good for veg but not for flowering and smoking. It's like a fucking sponge. Like wet camp fire. I putting my 7 weeks old weed still in the microwave for 15 sec. Ridicolous. Will not grow next summer for sure.
@Bertoxxulous, yeah I am the same I couldn’t take to vaping and I bought the mighty vaporiser (just not the same) so I smoke blunts much nicer! Well the terpene most at this stage I thought limonene and that’s where the real lime/citrus taste. But also a spicy background which could be the caryophyllene. I am curing for a few weeks and I just know this will get better!
@TheGreenQueen420, Thank you so much! I cannot freaking wait! I saw your harvest pics, and you did an excellent job!!! All I have right now is shitty vape pen cartridges and I'm almost out of those too. I will never buy a vape pen cartridge ever again after this. I thought it would be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but boy was I wrong. Maybe others feel differently, but I do not like them. Are there any distinct terpene you are picking up?
