When defoliating, the best thing you can do is identify future bud sites, locate densely packed areas of foliage, and see which leaves aren't getting enough light to be useful. If leaves aren't getting enough light, they will take from the plant more than they give. We call them "sinks" and the best thing to do is cut them away. Too densely packed foliage will limit airflow and open you up for molds and also block light penetration. You obviously want future bud sites to be getting enough light to grow big and strong, so cut away fan leaves that are blocking the light. Never remove more than 1/3 of the fan leaves at once. When deciding to trim off a leaf, *stop*, ask yourself, "why do I want to cut this leaf?" If you don't have a good reason, leave it alone. Find that happy balance and keep up the good work!
