Without an air cooled hood the light to canopy distance should be between 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm)

Heya! a 600W I would say should be no further than 20" away during flower. That would be around 700par according to most 600W HPS manufacturers. Lowest I would go is 12" with gooood ventilation. Cheers,
