I know the plants need a wet/dry cycle in order to keep the chances of mold to a minimum. My question is, how dry? If I stick my finger in an inch and it's just slightly damp, but still a bit heavy, do I water? Do I wait till the top soil looks dry?

early on, i'd wait... later on when it can actually drink a quarter of the weight in day, i'll consider convenience, maybe water in evening. Or, will i wake up in time in morning before it wilts? lol... rather it not wilt, personally.
Learn the weight of a dry pot. Start learning how much the plant drinks relative to size... being consistent with size of plant, pot used etc can make it second nature.

When to start with nutes? This is what I gathered.From what I read, autoflowering should be given very little amounts of nutes; and - as a rule of thumb - I understood that:
- these should be approx. 1/4 the dosage suggested on the nutes bottles
- nutes feeding should start when the 4th layer of leaves pops up
