HID/HPS VS LED Pros and Cons of each

I've noticed a lot of grows on here using LED as opposed to HID/HPS. What are some of the advantages other than possibly a reduction in heat? I've always used HPS/MH lights ever since I first started taking it more seriously than just tossing a seed in some dirt and letting it go

I actually just read a study that showed an increase THC , CBD , and CBG with LED light compared to HPS. its posted to r/budscience on reddit

As you are seeing... everyone has differing experiences and differing results. We do not know your grow room so only you can choose the best light for you. For the past 7 years I have been 100% LED. I think many people doing LED don't have enough power. I consider 250 real watts per square meter (35 watts per square foot) to be the minimum for white LED grow lights. You might only need 200 watts/meter but it never hurts to have the extra power if you can use it and it never hurts to run lights at less than 100%. Too many newbies get trapped by false advertising when manufacturers call their 100w light a 600 or say it's equivalent to a 250 or 500 w HID/HPS. LED's are more efficient without a doubt, but they are not magic. Don't expect a 100w LED to do the same thing as a 250 HPS. It can be a good replacement for a 150 and has the benefit of using 1/3 less power and it produces a lot less heat making temperature control MUCH easier.

If you go to led you will definitely see a reduction in harvest size, unless you go with an led that needs c02 along with it. I have many friends that grow with led and one has the Fluence lighting. That is the closest any of my bros have come to putting out a harvest the size of mine with much more affordable to buy, HID lighting. Their final dry harvest is much lighter airier buds. Total weight is nowhere near my harvests. I run 1 630 watt cmd for my veg room and two 1000watt for my flower room. My bill every month is 140 bucks for power, so I stick with old proven school lighting. That's my 2 cents. Cheers

Yup to the other responses here. LED is cheaper to buy, more lumens per watt, run considerably cooler and average around 50000 hours life spans vs a few thousand for HPS. Personally I prefer COB led over quantum boards. Just make sure they output 380-840nm as that will be full spectrum with UV and IR.

Like Roberts says. LED has come on quite a lot over last few years. Even the budget lights have a decent light spectrum.

LEDs have gotten to the point they are stronger then hid/hps. Less heat more light, longer lifespan less energy use. Sums it up. Just getting the right spectrum is important.
