the humidity has been controllable with my a/c… but we just had a few days of rain and humidity. my plant has a mildewy smell. i see no signs of mold at this time… is it time to play it safe and get a dehumidifer?, or will a couple days of 55% humidity be enough to stave off mold

I do not think a few days with humidity "higher" carries much risk for giving you a mold problem. You should be good.
