Possible rookie defoliating issue

Mid flower, defoliate, bad idea? Brought in more light and air circulation, but I’m thinking I might have stressed her out. Hopefully she will respond positively, what are your thoughts friends? If I messed up I hope it helps someone not make the same mistake by defoliating late

I am an advocate of defoliation if the plant is so bushy, light & air cannot get in to the lower reaches! I've seen SOME defoliation that scares the living daylights out of me - but you have to know what you're doing. I do my defoliation very slowly - on a plant such as yours, I'd trim off maybe 5-10 fan leaves that are blocking light from bud sites... and then let her rest for a day or two before defoliating more. My belief is that doing so, particularly in flower, not only helps with light/air circulation which is important, but also it re-directs the nutes you're giving to the buds, not the leaves. Contrary to what was mentioned, defoliation in flower stage does NOT force the plant to produce more leaves... I think that's a bit of nonsense as I've never EVER seen a plant grow more leaves as a result of defoliation! If I've got a particularly bushy plant, I'll even start defoliation in the vegetative stage along with some LST to encourage lower buds to develop more fully. With my Tangerine Dream grow, I defoliated pretty much every single week and she's producing very well indeed. You may have stressed her out - but I wouldn't worry about it. She'll recover! Next time you defoliate (and I would do it again on her!), maybe don't do as much and she won't be so stressed... Good luck! She looks beautiful!

You could of trimmed out some lower grow points. I am more of a light selective defoliation. Basically thinning out some for more air. Them couple yellow ones around middle would go. And I would give just a little more nitrogen in feed. Not much. Base feed around potassium, and phosphorus for your bud development at this point. Trimming out the bottom to make plant focus her growing energy to top half is a good idea. Plus opens lower canopy to more air flow.

Yes, bad idea. I can not advocate for defoliation at any time and mid flower would be the worst time, as this is exactly when your plants needs maximum energy to grow her flowers. Quite simply - Less leaves = less energy being made = less growth. Removing healthy, green, energy producing leaves and forcing your plant to grow new healthy green leaves is absolutely pointless and the energy required to grow new leaves is energy that WON'T be going into bud growth! Defoliation is not required unless there is a severe humidity problem and the only leaves that should ever be removed are yellow ones, for by the time they are yellow, they have served their purpose. The only logical exception is if/when doing a bit of lollipopping. Asking questions after the fact is also pointless as you can't stick the leaves back on or reverse any other sort of radical procedure and I wish people would ask first then act, rather than act first then ask! At least with asking first you can make a more informed decision. The older leaves also serve as a reserve of ready made nutrition that your plant will draw upon during flowering (this is the reason for the so called "fade"), as it is more efficient to do so and that way all the energy being made (by the leaves) can go into bud production and not have to share the energy with making new nutrition. So, not only does defoliation reduce your plants capacity to make energy, which limits growth, it also robs her of this vital resource of pre-made nutrition she was relying on to use during flowering, which also limits growth! No wonder I see defoliation as pointless! And just because "everyone else does it", does not make it right! Besides, if your plant would not NEED those leaves, it would not grow them in the first place! As you can no doubt tell, I have made my views on pointless defoliation perfectly clear and backed up with botanical reasons which most growers fail to understand or even contemplate..... Every leaf is like a solar panel. You can't remove a whole bunch of solar panels and expect that things will be the same or better - it is like removing 3 cylinders from your Vee Eight racing car and then expecting it to do the same lap times or quarter mile ETs! In future, just remember - Maximum amount of healthy green leaves = maximum energy production = maximum growth. It really is that simple! Hope this helps you or anybody else who might read this. Cheers, Organoman.

Week four of flower is a good time to do the last defoliation. Best of luck the rest of the way.
