I've had this happen before, I think its because the seed was not planted deep enough and the soil aorund it was to loose for its tail to get a good grip and push its self up the right way. Plants detect gravy and that's where they know to push. Or so that's what I was taught.
Your solution was what I also did. was extremely gentle with it and it turned out just fine. Hope fully yours will too.

I had it not once, you have two ways
1. Dig her up and plant properly, success 3 out of 3
2. Cover roots with light ( small in particals ) soil , spray her up to moist well. Success 1 out of 2
