I recently started taking pictures with DSLR, and this is what works well for me:
1. using a dark/black background creates really nice pictures!
2. don't take pictures in your grow tent/cab, it's hard to get nice angles
3. no grow light, duh
4. a macro lens will take amazing close-ups of pistils/trichomes!
5. take a bunch of pictures! See what works and what doesn't! try different angles, different compositions and distances from the plant
6. edit your photos. playing with lighting, vignette, and colour can drastically change the picture. even basic software like the default stuff in Windows Photos goes a long way!
