Are roots disturbed by light?

Are roots disturbed by light? Is it safe to grow in a clear solo cup? I want to be able to see the roots (so I'm using clear cups), but I'm wondering if I should cover them with another cup or insulation of some type.

Hey bigolebuds! On the specific pic you shared the root ball is quite nice already. Probably time to transplant to bigger pot. Truly it is not good for the roots to get exposed to light, although you are not the first to use transparent cups. They will be just fine if it is temporary phase, and you move them to final pot after noticing the root development. If you want to help it a bit, you may cover them with aluminium foil and only expose to light when inspecting the roots. My very first grow was an auto all the way till the end in transparent 8l water bottle. It survived and provided me with some nice results. But for sure it did not help her to thrive. Enjoy the grow!

Without another cup or some form of covering, mildew will grow in there. You got farther than I did, so you may be OK. But those I have talked to just put the clear cup inside of a red solo cup and they were fine.

Direkter "Bestrahlung" mit Licht könnte Algen bilden. Glaube ich. Ich würde das lassen. Viel Glück noch

Roots are sensible to UV, like many thing on earth. But I've already use transparent yogurt pots with holes at the bottom, to roots cuttings without issues: most plastics are UV resistant, especially those who are food grade.

Yes, roots ARE damaged by light exposure. NO, it is not the best idea to grow in clear plastic cups.........black plastic pots are best..........cover them if you must watch the roots. Think of what happens in nature, roots grow underground in complete darkness.

On closer inspection it looks like a clear plastic solo cup. If so get a normal solo cup and slide that clear one into it, then light won't hit the roots but when you want to look at the roots you can seperate the cups and have a look.

Roots don't like light mate. Cover up the cup to prevent the plant having a hissy fit.

Usually, you get algae from the clear cups that can rob the plants of the minerals and such in the soil. Also is not a good thing for the roots to be exposed to prolonged light exposure, they will darken up and shrivel to some extent, unlike a white, healthy rootstock, where mini root hairs extrude out from the main root.

Prolonged light exposure will damage roots. They'll eventually gain pigment and attempt to photosynthesize the light. When that happens they can't absorb nutrients anymore. Think of what happens to a tree root when it breaks through the surface of the soil. It barks over and looks like the trunk. Double cup with something opaque.

The main reasons why you should NOT do it is because the roots show negative phototropism, this means that they grow in the opposite direction to light. Light can also promote the growth of fungi or other conditions on the roots.
