Dehumidifier water for watering?

MrLahey
MrLaheystarted grow question 5 months ago
Am I being dumb by wanting to use the water put out from my dehumidifier for watering my plants? From tap my ppm is 440 and has chloramine. The ppm from the water in my dehumidifier is 110 ppm and no chloramine. Not worth the risk (if so, what are the risks)?

This is called grey water. It is not advisable to use it on potted plants.. letting it sink into the earth outside is probably okay, if oyu don't want to throw it down the drain. Any bacteria, mold, or dust that was in the air or sitting on the fan will be in the water. Possible heavy metal contamination from the coils inside, too Do you want to potentially contaminate your weed? Is it worth it for a maybe? i don't think so... I find it hilarious that people that profess "natural" this or that as some infallable strategy, then dump potentially contaminated water on something they will smoke. Ignorance is not bliss. It is dangerous AF. That is not in reference to the person asking a question and only a generalization. just as you shouldn't use "natural rain water" if you live downwind from ANY urban center, lol.. and 100x so in 3rd world countries. Just dumping acid rain water on your plants, lol... and all the pollution from sorrounding areas.... "natural" can be dangerous, stupid and useless just as often as it is beneficial.. more actually.. it's a much lower bar to be irrelevant or have a negative effect than coincidentally be useful to a specific context.

This is exactly why I posted this question - for the discussion, pointers, info and opinions! Maybe my initial google search wasn't adequate but I found lots of conflicting info that way. Thank you all and definitely Polyphemus. I've decided to (for now) not use my dehumidifier gray water for my next grow (this current grow has been watered with purchased RO/DI water since day one). I do wonder how the plant itself would filter any contaminants out of the grey water. Would they really have issues with it or would the plant biology nullify or "disarm/deactivate" the contaminants? And if they do "nullify" the contaminants what other parts of the plants would suffer (bud production? terpene production?, etc?) due to vital energy being redirected to remediating the grey water? The fact that I don't have a truly scientific answer will of course cause me to NOT user the dehumidifier grey water on my grows. The last thing I want is to kill my plants deep into veg or flower, haha or even limit the plants full genetic potential. I would like to eventually find some scientific data however. I wonder if any plant scientists have tested this with Cannabis? I know Dr Bugbee deals with lighting and not water or water treatment but I wonder if he or other grow scientists have done a control study on this or know of any. With legalization being so new, my guess is that no studies exist.

@Polyphemus <---This gentleman is correct and has taught me something. I don't believe there would be any ppm in dehumidifier water, which is why i compared it to RO, but that is where the similarities end. RO water has been filtered and stripped of everything, which includes mold, fungus, bacteria. Any mold fungus or bacteria in the air of your space WILL be in that water. So, you can use it on house plants, but it's not recommended to use in veggies or other plant products you will be consuming, and that includes smoking. I made the assumption based on the lack of ppm in that water, but it's not filtered so it can harbour naughty things you don't want. My apologies for assuming it was ok. And thank you to @Polyhemus for the clarification. I haven't needed to use a dehumidifier since 1994.

Grey water is not "ro" water nor is it distilled or filtered in any way.. it is simply condense water from the atmosphere and will contain all the trash that is in that local atmosphere too. bwahah, along with all the bacteria and shit in a reservoir that probably isn't cleaned often enough. And if it is... my not rinse out all the cleaning chems used, lol... just a bad idea on top of several bad ideas...

Add a weeee dose of micro nutrients to the water. Then pH away and use it to your hearts content. Or if you use a humidifier elsewhere, thats basically RO water which you can use, minus the dash of micro nutrients.

Don’t… there’s no buffer in this water to stabilize correctly the pH. I have tried already, as I have 2 dehumidifiers sucking out around 15L per days. The pH of the solution will become hazardous and will be extremely hard to fix it correctly… Mary Popins likes to help the medecin to go down but unfortunately seams to grow memes only 😜

Thanks supercali. That’s kind of what I’m thinking too. Good call on the tap mixture. Saint Louis’s water supply uses chloramine but from what I understand, the amount used is nowhere near high enough to cause issues with plants. I’ll mix some tap water with my dehumidifier water to disinfect and try this on my next grow. My current one has had Calmag issues due to me using rodi water and not supplementing enough calcium and magnesium. I will see how my next grow reacts to the dehumidifier water. 😀

No, it's not stupid - it would be a shame to throw away such soft water. Depending on the water you use - rainwater, water from a dehumidifier, water from a tumble dryer, etc. - it's a good idea to mix it with tap water, as the chlorine will disinfect it. Leave it to stand and then stabilise the PH if necessary (unless your fertiliser does it for you).
