Self watering wick for 1 week away, what's your method?

I'm off on holiday soon 🌴 Has anyone got any experience using self watering wick rope? Just need to know how far to put in the soil and where? And if I put a weeks worth of water in the reservoir, it definitely won't drown my plants right?

Yes, i use bottom feed pots for my mother's, and i use the AC Infinity self watering bases. Here's the advice i can give you based on my experience. Bottom water wick rope systems work really really well, when the connection is made with the moisture in the soil, and the moisture in the rope. If the ropes are going directly into the soil and will be in contact directly, you'll be ok. I don't know how big your plants are but if you have a bushy 2 foot plant in a 3 gallon pot with an established root zone. If you filled a reservoir with 2 gallons of water and put the wicks in, i think you''d be ok. But 3 gal res would be way safer. When you wick water you have to make the connection between the soil moisture and the ropes. If not, it won't work and your plants are dead. I have 8 of the AC bases. The ropes lay across the plastic base, and the fabric pot sits on top. The ropes don't go in the soil but just lay under the pot. I have seen the connection not work enough with the AC bases that i no longer use them as wicking bases. I just top feed and water. So unless you are familiar with a wick water pot already, then i'd say you better be sure that capillary action takes place or you'll come home to dead plants. To make the connection you have to get the entire body of soil wet. Top to bottom, then fill your reservoir and the water will travel up the ropes and make contact with the soil and the connection is made.

wicks are a bad idea. Any sort of bottom feed has a risk of buildup where the ebb and flow of water occurs near top. So many better options. Don't go down this rabbit hole, even if it "can" work well. Why add risk to the process for no reason? Anything that can happen will if given the opportunity, and that's all a wick does.. gives opportunity for problems. One more thing to maintain, too. one more thing to buy repeatedly... short term is less of a problem than say 4 months of irrigating this way. with a small garden you can irrigate plants on a timer very cheaply. callibrate to get a proper runoff and no concern of fertilizer buildup in zones that repeatedly get wet, not much drunk from that area, then dries with a high level of minerals remainign behind that go into solution the next time you water in addition to the fertilzier in any said water... i.e. risk of buildup. same reason you don't irrigate in a way that leaves dry pockets in substrates... just a bad idea that may not always lead to problems, but if you consistently do it will most definiteley cause hiccups at some point.
