I know that dry-downs or dry backs and a few other stressors during the first 3 weeks of flower help with vigor. Additionally, I have seen multiple references to small multiple feedings throughout the day instead of normal? ( I don't do hydro so it was hard to completely understand). I know that commercial sites do this. Want to try something fun that has decades of tangential evidence to say it helps increase plant yield? Play classical music to your plants during lights on, I heard they like Bach.
The answer to your second question is: yes, cold temperatures assist with the purple color in the leaves (anthocyanin replacing chlorophyll). Check out my Nutter Butter diary, the last week's photos show the purple really coming through. It is most purple near the edges of the tent, where the coldest temps are at night 15°C or 59°F. Some of the leaves are near black now.
Genetics are going to play a big role as well. Most strains are hybridized by now and have some sort of purple traits in their lineage. So with cold enough temps during lights off, I believe you can get most strains to show a little purple now.
