No, you do not have to defoliate. Doing so routinely without any reason is objectively wrong.
Read "to defoliate or not..." article on cocoforcannabis.com. they do a good just summing it up.

No, defoliation is NOT a required "technique" when growing cannabis and should be avoided at all costs imo.
If you are not having issues with humidity, I would strongly urge you to just let them be.
Remember...........
more leaves = more energy being made = more (bud) growth!
Next time, to avoid over crowding, consider only growing one decent plant in that sized area.

Leave them alone. Nothing should be taken off ! Too thin canopy, plants cope with 2 meter bushes and still stack up somehow.
