Eternity Grow Cup 2025 Harvest Celebration: Has science finally caught up to homegrowers' noses/taste buds? Can we put the terpene wheel to rest?

Flavorants are non-terpene (non isoprene based) molecules which contribute to smell or taste. This includes esters amongst other alcohols, canna-sulfur compounds, and other hydrocarbon molecules including at times lipids. This supposedly solves the skunk question too. Thoughts?

Yeah growmie, flavorants are real, and they explain a lot. Some of the loudest strains barely show terps on paper, but they reek because of these extra compounds like esters and sulfur volatiles. Skunk’s probably one of them. So no, the terp wheel ain’t dead, but it’s definitely not the full story anymore.

from end-user standpoint, the chemical group one molecule or another belongs to isn't too relevant. It is "cause and effect," but they only care about effect. So, if it's 1 group of molecules or several that add up to flavor, so be it. Even with THC they have to say "believe" to be the predominant psychoactive molecule, because there is/was so little reputable research on the plant due to legal reasons. Any individual research or study needs to be taken as a grain of salt. Someone trying to breed certain smells and flavors should definitely take note. Save a lot of time and effort mapping out the related alleles. No more guessing or maybes... just known probabilities. Life isn't magical. Science is the only path forward. Anecdote failed for 50,000 years of human existence. It had its opportunity and by this point has shown how useless it is. End up with the "cornell formula" from pure anecdote and it doesn't fucking work, lol. They just used a university's name to ride their caottails and give integrity to some figment of a person's imagination. Anecdote is why people spray their plants with milk, burn it, ice it, deprive it of light, or deprive it of nutrients, Bwahahah. Or, how about we cut off all the leaves so it can't take in as much co2?

Hey there yeah ever sense I have heard about terps I have always wandered why there wasn’t a term that lined up with skunk or gas or og or old school hash smells In my opinion it’s really hard to find strains of weed that have the old school dank smells like yeah they are out there but most of the main stream market for home growers seed banks they are all mostly pushing some old school strains but like there own modern spin off that they made and honestly most of the seed banks version of old school strains are not exactly what we used to smoke back in the day. Also most the seed banks half of there selection is some type of cookies x gelato x zkittlz. The real big problem is everyone is breeding what people are buying and for the past 10 years everyone wants pretty plants with cool purple colors with a high thc content. When they are deciding what strains to bring to market and breed they are not focusing on what smokes good they want those purple plants with %30plus thc. They have machines to test how much thc is in final buds so they are just going off that and colors now when breeding in most cases…. Now along time ago when people were doing it underground and selling it on the black market the only thing they were going off was the smell and how it smoked and what there customers said and when you buy weed offf the street the 1st thing you do is smell the bag to see if it’s some gas like if it smells thru the bag then it’s some gas but those days are gone and in the world with things like grow diaries and social media everyone is chasing clout wanting good pictures But it totallly agree that the skunk smell from weed definitely come from some pungent sulfur type of something in the plant and not terps I’m sure when the USA gets around to legalizing in arose the board some big drug companies will start to dump millions into research and we will finally have some solid information on weed. It is crazy that it’s such a high part of sosiety that we don’t even know what causes the different smells in a plant when we have technology to dna sequence things on Avery short amount of time I hope in the future we identify what causes the different smell that people seek in marrijana and I hope they start breeding with that attribute in mind Have a great day
