Welcome back my friends! Here I'll be attempting to grow White Cherry Gelato, sort of. This is a bagseed diary. I was lucky enough to score a White Cherry Gelato seed out of some dispensary sample recently. As such, it should be noted that this is a second generation, and could be unstable, crossed with something unknown, or whatever. It might not even be a photoperiodic plant. Nothing is a given except the cultivar from which this seed was produced. Let's have some fun, shall we?

Began germination using the paper towel method.
I checked on the seed about 18 hours later and it is cracked open. We will wait a few more hours and then sow directly into her first pot with a light seedling mix consisting solely of coco coir and perlite in a small pot. Later, she will transition to her final home, a 4-gallon pot of my custom organic soil blend.
Sowed seed into starter pot.

I transplanted her today into a 4-gallon planter. Let's hope she's not an autoflower.

She's still short and doing well. She has a couple holes in her leaves that were my fault. I dropped gnat trap paper on her. Live and learn.

Day 41 - September 05, 2023
It's been a couple weeks since I updated this diary. It's also been a couple weeks since I took care of this plant. I applied DE I have just been letting them go with a little bottom water to drink in my tent, with a few others that were infested with fungus gnats.
The good news is the bugs are gone. The other good news is the plants are still alive, this one included. And there is no bad news :)
And look at this. Her leaves are turning red. It's pretty attractive, and I can't say I've seen a plant look quite like this in the vegetative stage before :)
Day 42 - September 06, 2023
She doesn't have much of the red mutation on the other side. Maybe it wasn't getting as much light. The side that was red looks much more colorful now though. Cool plant 😎

You ever see a plant that is more purple than green...in veg? Well, now you have (and now I have).

Day 50 - September 14, 2023
Alright, so the original strain where I found this seed, White Cherry Gelato, is supposed to have some reddish purple coloration in flower, but I haven't seen anything like this, especially in veg. Also, one of the larger dark red fans had some necrosis in the middle and was completely desiccated. I am beginning to think this is just a severe red mutant phenotype, since this is week 8 and it is still happy-looking with new growth, even if slow. I believe she is supposed to stay very short, so she could be just like another photo I have veging right now that has been showing preflowers and has been ready for me to flip the light for about 4 weeks now, but it is still the same size. Sometimes they don't want to grow any larger. There is also guaranteed a lot to do with this soil mix. It is from an old soil mix, and it is no good at all. There is no aeration, so this plant could even have root rot. But until it starts really letting me know something is wrong, I'm going to let it be red or whatever it wants to be until it is time for me to give it the flip it needs!
To clarify, I do not believe this seed came from a hermie mother. I believe that it got pollinated, which is completely possible, because the vendor is a commercial outdoor grower for the state of New York. A hermaphroditic seed would be nearly identical to its mother

Day 58 - September 22, 2023
I flipped her 5 days ago. I'm still not seeing any pre-flowers. Her growth has been stunted for a couple weeks. I may have root rot so I don't know how well this one will go yet. I've seen some plants go dormant at the flip for 2-3 weeks though, so we'll give it time to see.
Day 70 - October 4, 2023
It's a girl! After more than 2 weeks trying, it finally showed sex. The plant is not growing fast because of the bad soil mix. I am probably going to transplant it tomorrow to help it finish flowering.
Day 77 - October 11, 2023
I never transplanted her. I didn't want to risk it because she was well into flower. It's really not a big deal right yet. Her top looks very healthy. Infact, it's green, unlike the layer below that which is a dark purple. And below that is green and then purple again. I guess they're painting stripes in the genes now. This plant is pretty bonkers. Small, but bonkers. Let's see what she bonks next.
Day 86 - October 20, 2023
Hey there, welcome to week 4 of flower. We're starting to see a small glimpse of the reason I was excited to find a seed in this fire.
Day 89 - October 23, 2023
I decided I am ending this diary here. Let me explain.
This plant is the only plant that is left from a round of plants I was growing that used an extremely bad soil mix due to a mistake on my part: the soil had no aeration (no perlite, etc). All other plants got root rot. This is the only plant I had in a larger 4-gallon pot, so it wasn't moved, just let it dry out and not watered often since. That was a mistake, and I should have just started over sooner.
This plant definitely has root rot. I am also seeing patches of mildew on lower leaves, in an environment that is lower than 50% RH. This is because the stem itself is now rotten on the inside. See what happened to my Matanuska Thunder plant yesterday when I broke a stem in training the day before: https://growdiaries.com/diaries/180565-grow-journal-by-resimax
As you can see, this plant got a severe fungal infection literally overnight, due to the spores inside the broken stem being released. I don't even want to chance using this end product, even if it looks fine.
So, that is the reason I'm ending this diary here. Sorry folks. I will try not to make such stupid mistakes in the future.
This is a fascinating specimen! I would take some cuttings before moving on to flower-phase if I were you. By preserving this one, you can keep experimenting and get the grow dialed in. Even if the first run doesn't finish flawlessly you can keep it running as a side-project 👊😊
