Can I trim/cut some of the bigger leaves close to the main stem (obviously, the leaves closer to the top that are not forming any buds and just casting shadows) to allow the lower buds to get more light? I am trying to maximize light exposure to hopefully increase my yield.

Hey there so I feel like defoliation is almost always a good thing. Any way that you can open up the Bud sites to light is good. But there's a fine line between taking too much leaves and them not being able to do their photosynthetic processes. I didnt defoliate and im seriously regretting it. So defoliate some, evaluate your work, then defoliate a touch more if needed. But always leave enough leaves for the plant to perform its duties. Also the hardest thing is to be patient and for me I don't feel like my buds really began to fat in and really bulk up until they had been flowering for at least like 4 -6 weeks. Keep up the great work. Happy flowering. ✌️

This week, started using Advanced Nutrients: micro, grow, bloom. A few days after I first used, leaves are starting to yellow at the bottom of all plants. This is a concern for me, each day there are more and more and they are starting to fall off. Will monitor and also test the pH. Wishing I would have used bigger pots...next grow

Still in the stretch, had to move the lights higher in the tent. Starting to give off a distinctive smell. I am having a hard time controlling my humidity, get really high when the lights and fan are not on. Considering switch fan to 24/7.

So I made a basic noob mistake and used Miracle-Gro as a medium for my first grow. The nutrients in the soil is cause my plants to get too much nitrogen which as a result has several plants experiencing nitrogen toxicity. It was recommended that I continue my grow with adding too many more nutes in the plants that are experiencing severe clawing. I flushed the plants really well and hopeful that will correct some of the issues. I do still have 4 plants that are doing very well even in the same soil type. Those will continue to be feed during each watering.

The stretch is complete, finally starting to see the blooms fatten up some. Still struggling with nute because of miracle gro soil. Making the best of it. Four of the seven plants are getting full nutes with very little signs of trouble. The remaining three I am supplying with half the nutes every other watering, the soil has affected those the most. I am looking forward to how much the plants flowers mature this week.

I was having an issue with extremely high humidity until recently, the average % as of late has been around 52-58%. What is the optimum humidity level for my buds and if its is lower should I purchase a dehumidifier?

Hey Gro so if you can stay at the 50s range that can work, especially with good ventilation. Keep the air moving around the buds the best you can. I think having a dehumidifier around is always good...i think around this time i see em on sale/clearance at the local target for like 10-25 bucks, not bad price for a back up solution. I feel like i hear lower H levels can help with either terpene or trichrome productions...so one way or another less H during flowering is better than too much. Dont give up and keep the air flowing, ive learned cannabis is one tough ass plant and can battle a lot of problems. ✌️💚

Entering week 6, buds are starting to fatten up and the smell is getting stronger. All week I have been working on an infestation of white flies, aphids and spider mites, caught me by surprise. Had no choice but to spray with a store bought insecticide. Always used defoliation to remove what I will say seemed like hundreds and hundreds of bugs and eggs. I will have to keep an eye out this week for any remaining critters. Also, the three plants that was on limited feeding because of the curled leaves, the became very discolored so I am not feeding the same as the others, will have to watch for any progress there too. All in all, they look pretty good.

This was a heck of a week for me. I am now down to 4 plants and a possible, lol. A majority of my plants grew bananas and I kept removing the bananas to prevent pollinating the grow tent, unfortunately, I believe 2 plants were pollinated. One plant I left to finish out, the other I removed but the buds were pretty big so I haven't did anything with it yet, it's in my dining room (gets no traffic) getting natural sunlight. It currently has 20+ bananas on it so I will not put it back into the tent. The other plant that I removed also had bananas but really small buds so I cut it up to dry to see what happens to it. I do still have on plant remaining from the three that I did not feed just gave water (the discolored ones), I had to cut off most of the leaves because they were infested with aphids and white flies. The buds were and ok size and didn't want to discard so I put it back into the tent, that's the one I considered the possible and actually, counting the one in the dining room, there are 2 possibles. I just started the flush process for the grow and hopefully will harvest in less than 2 weeks. I will check the trichomes on Wednesday to see where I am in regards to harvesting. All of the pistols are orange/brown on two plants. Stay tuned for the next update...

Finally feel like the aphid infestation is all clear, took a lot of work but learned some pretty interesting things in the process just because I had to thoroughly inspect the plants several times. The 4 remaining plants are looking really good. I have two plants that have 100% orange/brown pistils with clear trichomes and two plants that are at about 70% orange/brown pistils and clear trichomes. I am waiting for the last big swell from the buds and then harvest time.

Finally able to harvest, definitely did not get the yield I wanted but overall, it was great for my first grow. I learned a lot on this journey and that knowledge will make the next grow so much easier and get more yield.

So after doing some research I believe my yellowing problem is due to nutrient burn. I gave my plants too much nutrients in the early stages of flowering. Lesson learned...😳

Gromaticcommentedweek 16 years ago
I appreciate all the feedback. I know I am early in the flowering stage, I just wanted to know because it seemed like it would help get more light to the lower buds. Thanks for letting me know it can be done. I will cut back some of the huge leaves later on in the flowering process. I have my plants in 1 gallon felt pots, should I consider bigger for my next grow? Should I consider transitioning now?

@OutForReal, Yea, I am well into the stretch now. I am having an issue with the lower leaves yellowing on each of my 7 plants. Each day there are more leaves ever since I started using different nutes. (Advanced nutrients: micro, grow, bloom)

Hey cross...i saw you trying to do a good flush to help push those time released outta there, i think this was a great idea. Ive heard of people doing that as well as adding saw dust to soil so the nitrogen goes after that instead of your plants. I hope it all works out. I listened to a soil guy on the cannabis cultivation and science podcast and he mentions certain elements that counteracts various nutrients. Maybe worth a listen depending on how much longer you have to go? ✌️

Experimentgreencommented6 years ago
@Gromatic, hey thats good the c.s was able to give some advice. The sawdust tip i came across while searching methods of naturally counteracting an abundance of various nutrients...how to somehow direct them else where or onto something besides your plant or roots. The podcast ive been listening to is called The Kis Organics cannabis cultivation and science podcast. It has everything from soil experts/bug experts/and just general master growers or the dispensary guys talking business. I found out a variety of things i never knew. Kis organics is on Instagram or you can google the podcast and itll give a few ways to listen. Ive always been a reader...but its cool listening to grow situations and talks while you're trimming or whenever you got free time. ✌️

@Experimentgreen, thanks, I did my best with the flush, I ended up flushing all the pants just to try to reset. Spoke to customer service at Advanced Nutrients and they stated that the nutrients are locked in pretty good but flush couldn't hurt. What site were you listening to?

@CRiSPrGrow,thanks for stopping by. I thought I did select an answer but obviously I did not. I have no idea what strain it is, I just know its in the purple family. I knew that when I planted them. I am looking forward to the fattening as well.😃

For Sure you can do it with every Plant. Be kind and let enough leaves so the plant can do Photosynthesis. I pick away only the Leaves who block the LIght to the Flowers. Budforming will take Time she is in the very beginning. Budbuilding goes Hand in Hand together.. Its a collaberation between POtsize (ROOTS) LIGHT and TIME... and NUtrients.. al things are important. At first POtsize...only healthy ad good and enough roots give you the Chance to get Good Flowers. The Biger your Pot is the more ROOTS, the more Flowers. TIME... budbuilding takes 6-8 weeks... here is Patience the Key. LIGHT.. only enough and a good light ( as near as Possible to the Sunlight) In a fullspectrum gives you a good Flowering. And in the End Nutrients.......Zhe plants need in the transition to flower one more time A nutoent mix. with Nitrogen for the stretching she does. And after stretching she needs less nitrogen but alot of Phosphorus ( in every Blooming-Fertiliser). Ok that was just a shortcut, for further questions feel free to ask per PM

Hi @Gromatic! You got it, go ahead! But do it slightly and only remove 3-4 leaves at a time. Also remember that after the stretch has ended, your plant won't produce new leaves anymore. Happy growing 👊

Yes, I will do so tonight during my light cycle. Thx...I also think I am going to take a chance a transition one of my plants to a bigger pot. Trying not to panic but the discoloration is climbing higher and higher. 🤬🤬
