Introduction - Week 02 Summary - Well another uneventful week. Now there are 3 cubes. Cube 1 sprouted (sort of) but I think she's stunted and weak. I think I removed the humidity dome a bit too early. So towards the end of the week I placed it back. Also, throughout the week, I think temps were a bit too low. So to keep temps higher, towards the end of the week, I removed all buffers and lowered the tray all the way (now the tray is sitting straight on top of the heating mat). As for cube 2, no signs of growth all week. Not sure why. So started a third cube. This time I wrapped the entire cube in foil to keep the light out. When presoaking cube 3, I also added a low dosage of week 1 grow nutes (~200 PPMs). Most likely I'll try a 4th seed next week using the same foil method but without grow nutes to see if there's a difference. Next week I'll also try to increase the overall temp and RH. Not looking good for this run. At the moment, I can't even get a viable seedling started. Day 02 - Tuesday - 12/22/20 - Total Days: 009 ----------------------------------- - [1130]: Checking on the cubes again. --- Dome temps were at 77°F at 99% RH --- Temps look perfect! But still no germination. --- Sprayed the dome with distilled water PH'd to 5.6 --- Until a cube sprouts, not much I can do except wait. - [2220]: Checked on the cubes again. --- Dome temps were at 80°F at 99% RH --- Sprayed the dome with distilled water PH'd to 5.6 --- Added distilled water PH'd to 5.6 to the tray. Made sure not to overfill it. --- Temps and RH look great! Not sure why nothing is germinating. --- If nothing sprouts by Thursday night, probably will plant a third seed. Also sprayed the dome. - [0825]: Ah yea! I see a sprout! --- Upon closer inspection, I can see cube 1 finally starting to sprout! Cube 2 still shows no signs of germination. --- Being in the cube for 10 days, she'll be the longest seed I've germinated. Not sure if she'll be healthy. --- Will check on her later tonight! - [1900]: Checked the cubes again. --- Dome temps were at 78°F at 99% RH --- Conditions seem perfect. --- Filled a measuring cup with a cup of distilled water. --- Added 6 drops of Voodoo Juice --- PH'd the solution to 5.6 --- Poured some into the tray and sprayed the top of the cubes with the Voodoo solution. Also sprayed the dome. Day 05 - Friday - 12/25/20 - Total Days: 012 ----------------------------------- - [1015]: Checked up on the cubes. --- Cube 2 still looks the same, but cube 1 has started to uncurl her cotyledons! --- She's a late bloomer so not sure how yellow she'll be. --- Dome temps were at 75°F at 99% RH --- Filled a measuring cup with a cup of distilled water. --- Added 6 drops of Voodoo Juice --- PH'd the solution to 5.9 --- Sprayed the top of the cubes with the Voodoo solution. --- Removed the dome. --- Plan to switch to 18/6 light cycle at 1600 --- Poured more Voodoo water into the tray. --- Without the dome, the tray's humidity will hopefully drop closer to 70%. Temps will also be lower. So I lowered the tray even closer to the heating mat. Basically only the box separates the tray and heat mat. Hoping to keep temps closer to 75°F --- I'll check again later to what temps stabilize at. - [1100]: Checked on the temps. --- Tray temps were at 70°F at 60% RH --- Lowered the tray even closer to the heat mat. Now only a piece of cardboard separates the tray and heat mat. - [1200]: Checked on the temps again. --- Tray temps were at 72°F at 71% RH --- Placed the tray straight onto the heat mat to see if temps can get even higher. --- Also turned the humidifier on. --- Set the humidifier to the lowest setting. --- Decided to run the humidifier only when the lights are on. To do this, I simply rerouted the cord outside the tent and connected it to the same power strip as my light (the entire strip is on the same timer). --- Adjusted the tent temp controller maximums to 77°F at 55% RH - [1600]: Checked on the temps again. --- Tray temps were at 78°F at 57% RH --- Adjusted the Voodoo water to 5.6 and poured some into the tray. --- Also set the light to 18/6. So lights off from 1000-1600 (10am-4pm). - [1715]: Screw it! Going to plant a 3rd cube! --- Going to soak this one in a low nutrient solution (less than 300 PPMs). --- Also going to try to germinate this one in complete dark. To do this, I'm going to use a sheet of aluminum foil. --- Filled a measuring cup with 2 cups of distilled water. --- PH was at 6.6 --- PPMs were at 9 --- Added 10 drops of Rhino Skin (13 PPMs) --- Added 5 drops of Sensi Grow A --- Added 5 drops of Sensi Grow B (123 PPMs) --- Added 10 drops of B-52 (193 PPMs) --- Added 10 drops of Voodoo Juice (193 PPMs) --- Added 5 drops of Hydroguard (193 PPMs) --- Added a fresh rockwool cube --- PH was at 6.6 --- PH'd it down to 4.7 --- PPMs went up to 221 --- Going to let the cube to soak in the nutrient solution for a bit. --- Selected the largest of the remaining 4 seeds. --- Also drained the tray. Plan to feed cubes 1 and 2 some of the same solution. - [1845]: Checked on the rockwool nutrient water. --- PH was at 5.1 --- Added PH up --- PH went up to 5.6 --- PPMs were at 222 --- Going to let the cube soak a bit in the newly buffered nutrient solution. - [1920]: Okay time to plant the seed! --- Checked the rockwool water. --- PH was at 5.8 --- PPMs were at 207 --- Perfect! --- Removed cube 3 from the rockwool solution. I tried not to shake any water out. --- Flipped it upside down onto a sheet of foil. --- I made a shallow hole and dropped the seed in. Then pinched closed. --- Did not add any extra water. --- To create a makeshift dome, I covered the top of the cube with a tiny plastic measuring cup. --- Then I wrapped the entire thing with foil. --- Then I placed her into the tray behind cubes 1 and 2. --- Poured the nutrient mix into the tray. Also poured a bit onto the top of the cubes 1 and 2. --- Tray temps were at 78°F at 54% RH --- Now there are 3! --- I'll check cube 3 on Sunday morning to see if any growth occurs. --- I'll remove the foil as soon as she begins to sprout. Otherwise, I'll check on her daily. --- The foil should allow for a completely pitch black germination and the extra air gap at the top will allow room for sprouting. At least that's the idea. --- As for the nutrient soak, I decided to do this because the last two germinations have resulted in deficient seedlings. I hope the extra nutrients will help to aid in germination. --- I don't plan on feeding anymore nutes for a while anyways. Just going to top off the tray with straight distilled water. Then adjust the PH to an appropriate level (5.7-6.0). I'll check PPMs and hope they stay within 100-600 PPMs. --- Since all I have is one late-sprouted seeding, I plan to tray feed her for a bit before transplanting. --- This time I want more than a single tap root before transplanting into DWC. --- This will also give the other 2 cubes a chance for the bucket. - [2345]: Checked on the tray and things were looking a bit dry. --- PH was at 6.2 --- PPMs were at 330 --- Added distilled water and adjusted the tray's PH --- PH was at 5.8 --- PPMs were at 175 Day 06 - Saturday - 12/26/20 - Total Days: 013 ----------------------------------- - [0800]: Checked up on the cubes. --- Dome temps were at 71°F at 60% RH --- Added distilled water to the tray. Just enough to wet the tray without wetting the cubes. Did not bother to adjust the PH. - [1915]: Checked up on the cubes. --- Dome temps were at 79°F at 51% RH --- RH is a bit of a challenge. --- May have to use the dome. - [2000]: Decided to use the dome again. --- I think I may have removed the dome too early. --- Sprayed the dome and placed it on an angle which should allow for more airflow. Day 07 - Sunday - 12/27/20 - Total Days: 014 ----------------------------------- - [0845]: Checked up on the cubes. --- Dome temps were at 83°F at 49% RH --- Everything was pretty dry so sprayed the dome with distilled water. --- Added more distilled water to the tray. Just enough to wet the bottom of the tray but not high enough so the cubes will wick the water. --- Humidifier was low so refilled it. - [1700]: Checked up on the cubes. --- Dome temps were at 79°F at 75% RH --- Checked on cube 3 and no signs of growth. --- Not sure why nothing is growing. --- I'll check again tomorrow. --- Sprayed the dome with distilled water. --- Added more distilled water to the trays. Again just enough to wet the bottom of the tray without having the cubes wick the water up. - [2315]: Everything was looking pretty dry. --- Sprayed the dome again. --- Refilled the tray with distilled water. --- Decided to place the dome completely on. Also close both vents halfway. --- I hope to increase the RH again to 99% --- Well another week and not much progress. --- Growing in this colder weather is more challenging than I thought. --- Going to try to keep the temps higher next week. Also if cube 3 doesn't sprout in a few days, going to plant a 4th seed. Going to use the same method, but without nutrients. [END OF WEEK 02]

Introduction - Week 03 Summary - This week was a bit more eventful! Planted a 4th cube and she's pretty much already sprouted! I really like these warmer temps for germination. At least under the conditions I'm growing in, 80-85°F seems to be ideal. Hotter seems to be better than colder for germination. To keep temps up, I have the tray sitting straight on top of the heat mat. Even during these colder winter days, the mat seems to be keep things pretty stable and warm. Midway through the week I planted Cube 4 which was germinated using Hydrogen Peroxide. I soaked the rockwool cube in the peroxide solution (no nutes but PH'd balanced), then dropped the seed in and wrapped everything in foil (see full log below for details). Hydrogen Peroxide is suppose to sterilize and infuse the grow medium with oxygen. As for the foil, that's used to make it completely dark while in the tray. Well not sure if it was the peroxide or the darkness, but I started seeing signs of sprouting after 3 days! This was my first attempt and will take a few more germinations to fully dial in the process. But if I can get better germination rates, I'll be using this method for rockwool cubes from now on. Cube 1 also surprised me this week! She has basically fully sprouted and her 2nd set of true leaves have just about developed. Being a late bloomer, I'm not sure how she'll grow but I'm quite pleased (and completely surprised) that her leaves look nice and healthy. At the end of the week, I gave her a tray feeding of grow nutes so we'll see how next week goes. So ended the week with a fully sprouted seedling and a 2nd one on its way. Hope next week will be better! [START OF WEEK 03] Day 01 - Monday - 12/28/20 - Total Days: 015 ----------------------------------- - [0915]: Did a quick check. --- Dome was still completely wet. Had to remove it to see anything. --- Dome temps were at 85°F at 99% RH --- Temps look warmer which is perfect! --- Did not need to spray the dome but added a little more distilled water to the tray. - [2200]: Checked up on the cubes. --- Dome temps were at 87°F at 99% RH --- A bit warm, but still okay. --- Filled a measuring cup with a cup of distilled water. --- Added 5 drops of Voodoo Juice --- PH'd the solution down to 5.5 --- Did not check PPMs --- Added a bit of the solution to the tray and sprayed the tops of cube 1 and 2. --- Cube 1 is actually starting to look healthier! Her first set of leaves actually look nice and green. She's a bit wonky, but the new growth is looking pretty good. --- Checked on cube 3 and nothing has changed. I sprayed a little of the Voodoo water on top of the cube, resealed the foil and placed her back in the tray. Thinking of removing the foil in a day or two. --- Sprayed the dome with some of the Voodoo water and covered the tray. Both vents are still halfway opened. --- I'm liking these warmer temperatures. The cubes actually feel warm, so I think that's a good thing. I'm thinking of starting a 4th cube under these warmer conditions either tomorrow or Wednesday. Thinking of using the foil again, but without nutrients. Day 02 - Tuesday - 12/29/20 - Total Days: 016 ----------------------------------- - [0930]: Checked on the temps. --- Dome temps were at 83°F at 99% RH --- Sprayed the dome with the Voodoo water. --- Added a bit of Voodoo water to the tray. --- Cube 1 is actually looking pretty good! --- I am really (really) surprised! But we'll see how she develops. --- Going to start tray feeding as soon. - [2115]: Checked up on the cubes. --- Dome temps were at 86°F at 99% RH --- Cube 1 is looking better! --- No change in both cubes 2 and 3. --- Sprayed the tops of cube 1 and 2 with Voodoo water (PH'd to 5.7). --- Sprayed the dome with the rest of the Voodoo water. --- Cube 1 is amazing me and has renewed my hope for this run! I think she's already starting to sprout her second set of leaves. --- As for cubes 2 and 3, I think the nutes may have been the issue? If neither show any signs of growth by tomorrow night, I'll plant cube 4. Day 03 - Wednesday - 12/30/20 - Total Days: 017 ----------------------------------- - [0945]: Checked on the temps. --- Dome temps were at 82°F at 99% RH --- Did not need to spray the dome, but added distilled water to the tray. --- Wow! Cube 1 is looking pretty damn good! --- Will still plant a 4th seed tonight. --- Going to use a bit of Hydrogen Peroxide to both sterilize and provide more oxygen for germination. - [2100]: Checked on the temps. --- Dome temps were at 87°F at 99% RH --- Cube 1 may actually have a chance at the bucket. --- She is already starting to stretch a bit towards the light. --- Checked on cube 3 and still no change. So decided to remove the foil. --- As for cube placement, since cube 1 is the only sprouted seedling, I decided to center her in the tray. Then placed cube 2 to the left and cube 3 to the right (from left to right, it's cube 2, 1, then 3). --- Did not need to spray the dome and just placed it back on. - [2245]: Prepping to plant a 4th seed! --- Filled a measuring cup with a cup of distilled water. --- Added 10mL of Hydrogen Peroxide (3% strength) --- PH'd the solution down to 5.1 --- Dropped a fresh rockwool cube in. --- Going to let the cube soak for a bit. Plan to dilute the solution with a cup of straight distilled water before planting. --- Selected one of the 3 remaining seeds. - [2310]: Okay checked on the cube. --- PH was at 5.9 --- Added 1 cup of distilled water to the solution --- PH'd the solution down to 5.5 --- Going to let the cube soak a bit more. - [2330]: Time to plant! --- Checked the rockwool water. --- PH was at 5.7 --- Removed the cube from the solution and shook a bit out. I flipped it upside down and placed it on top of a sheet of aluminum foil. --- Made a shallow hole in the center then dropped the seed in and pinched the hole closed. --- Covered the cube with a tiny plastic measuring cup. --- Then wrapped everything in foil and placed cube 4 in the tray. --- Going check on her daily. After about 2-3 days of warm darkness, I'll remove the foil. --- Poured a bit of the peroxide water into the tray. Not enough for the cubes to wick, but enough to wet the bottom of the tray. --- Then placed the dome back on. Both vents halfway open. --- Since temps are all controlled in the dome, I unplugged the humidifier. Day 04 - Thursday - 12/31/20 - Total Days: 018 ----------------------------------- - [1100]: Opps! Kind of slept in. Could not check on the tent before lights out at 1000. I'll check later tonight. - [1645]: Okay checked on the cubes. --- Dome temps were at 86°F at 99% RH --- Cube 1 is getting bigger! --- Cubes 2 and 3 are unchanged. --- Checked on cube 4 but she was also unchanged. --- Did not need to spray dome. --- Added water to the tray and placed the dome back on. Day 05 - Friday - 01/01/21 - Total Days: 019 ----------------------------------- - [0920]: Did a quick check. --- Dome temps were at 85°F at 99% RH --- Did not need to spray the dome but added a little more distilled water to the tray. --- Cube 1 is already starting to grow her second set of leaves! Although her left side is looking a bit wonky. --- No changes on both cubes 2 and 3. --- I'll check on cube 4 tonight. --- Added water to the tray and placed the dome back on (did not need to spray dome). - [1615]: Did another check. --- Dome temps were at 86°F at 99% RH --- Cube 1 looks happy! Oh dang! Going to tray feed her some grow nutes soon. --- Checked on cube 4. --- Woah! I can already start to see a sprout! --- Removed the foil and placed cube 4 next to cube 1. Then placed cube 2 behind cube 1. Then cube 3 behind cube 4. --- Glad to see some sort of positive results from the Hydrogen Peroxide germination! Hope that she sprouts soon! --- Did not need to spray the dome but added a little more distilled water to the tray. --- Going to prep Cube 1's feeding. She's looking a bit yellow so going to feed a diluted down version of week 1 nutrients (200-300 PPMs). - [1945]: Filled a measuring cup with 2 cups of distilled water. --- PH was at 6.1 --- PPMs were at 11 --- Added 10 drops of Rhino Skin (14 PPMs) --- Added 5 drops of Sensi Grow A --- Added 5 drops of Sensi Grow B (130 PPMs) --- Added 10 drops of B-52 (205 PPMs) --- Added 10 drops of Voodoo Juice (205 PPMs) --- Added 5 drops of Hydroguard (205 PPMs) --- PH was at 6.5 --- PH'd down to 5.7 --- PPM's were at 211 - [2015]: Going to let the nutrient solution sit for a bit. --- I plan to just give the cube a quick dunk in the solution for a few seconds, then shake a bit out. --- Then I'll continue to top spray them with distilled water and Voodoo Juice. - [2220]: Okay time to check the nutrient solution! --- PH was at 5.8 --- PPMs were at 212 --- Took cube 1 out of the dome. Shook a bit of the water out without squeezing. --- Completely submerged the cube in the nutrient solution for about 3 seconds. --- Shook out a bit of the solution and returned her to the tray. --- Did the same with cube 4, but only submerged halfway for a few seconds. Shook out as much as I could. Then returned her to the tray. --- Poured a bit of the solution on cubes 2 and 3. --- Sprayed the dome with distilled water and poured a bit into the tray. Introduction - Week 04 Summary - Not too bad of a week. To my pleasant surprise, Cube 1 is growing like a champ! She seems to be the one! At this rate, I may be transplanting her in a week or two. Midway through the week, Cube 1 was looking a bit yellow, so doubled the grow dosage. Even though still kinda yellow, she seems to be happier with the higher PPMs. Her leaves are nice and perky! Tossed out Cubes 2 and 3 (RIP) and renamed Cube 4 to 2. Not too sure on the new Cube 2. She looks stunted (maybe the peroxide?), but started looking a lot better towards the end of the week. Also planted a new Cube 3. She hasn't sprouted yet, but I hope to see something in the next few days. I used the same germination method as Cube 2 (Hydrogen Peroxide). Don't think I'll be using Hydrogen Peroxide to germinate anymore. Especially if Cube 3 doesn't sprout or ends up growing the same as Cube 2. Now there are 3 cubes! This week I also used Great White to inoculate the rockwool cubes with beneficial fungi and mycorrhizae. So far it seems to be doing great! Great White doesn't really affect PPMs yet is suppose to causes explosive root growth (I'll see in the next week or so). If I do plant the last seed (maybe next week), I'll inoculate the cube with Great White instead of Hydrogen Peroxide. Based on Cubes 2 and 3's growth, I'm not too sure about using Hydrogen Peroxide to germinate seeds in rockwool. Maybe the concentration was too high? Or maybe because I'm not using food grade Hydrogen Peroxide and the extra stabilizers are messing with germination? I dunno. Anyways, next time I germinate, I plan on using Great White. At the end of the week, I did a foliar feeding of CaliMagic and Great White. Hopefully this will help with the yellowing. Wow! Against the odds, Cube 1 is continuing to grow! Good to see that her roots are starting to explode. Perhaps almost time for DWC transplant? If Cube 3 does not sprout by the end of next week (and if I don't plant the last seed), I just may do so. I turned her around so I can see her leaves better. Going to leave her alone for now. --- It's been 17 days for cube 2 since planted (11 days for cube 3). --- So going to plant another seed tomorrow. Introduction - Week 05 Summary - This week was even better than the last! Finally starting to see some growth. Also did a transplant at the end of the week! Growth in the tray this week went quite smoothly! At the beginning of the week, did a tray cleaning and gave the cubes a fresh batch of nutes. Then the rest of the week was a lot of topping off with distilled water and PH balancing. Also, Great White seems to be doing wonders for root growth! Throughout the whole week, Cube 1 was perky and healthy looking. Surprisingly, she almost doubled in size and height too. Not sure if the growth spurt was entirely due to Great White, but it has definitely helped. By the end of the week, Cube 1's roots were just busting out from under the cube. So I made the call and decided to transplant her into the DWC bucket. Out of all of the transplants I've done so far, she's definitely had the most roots. Kinda funny that out of all of the 5 seeds that were planted from this strain, the first seed was the one to make it to the bucket. She was also a late bloomer too. Took her about 10 days to sprout and about a week or two to actually start growing. But now she's looking a lot better and I am stoked to see how well she does in the bucket! As for the remaining two cubes, one is still growing while the other is looking like a dud. I'm planning on vegging the one in the tray for as long as I can just to see what's possible. Also I figure it's good to have an extra seedling in case something happens to the one in the bucket. Hopefully next week will be even better! I'll also be giving both the bottom of the cube and the first layer of hydroton a slight dusting. --- It's not necessary, however I'm going to continue to check both the PH and PPMs. I will not adjust PH unless it strays out of a 4.0-8.0 range. I also tried to dust her roots a bit too. --- Placed her in the middle of the net basket. --- Then carefully filled in around her with more hydroton. --- Once everything looked flushed and even, I added another layer of hydroton to cover the top of the cube. - [1800]: Transplant done! --- Covered her with a glass bowl to keep the RH a bit higher as she transitions into her new home. --- Not going to adjust the PH at all (Going to be a challenge). --- Since the bucket is on the floor, the light is now 53" away from her top leaves. --- Tent temps were at 75°F at 45% RH --- Dome temps were at 77°F at 72% RH --- Refilled the humidifier and turned it on the lowest setting. Introduction - Week 06 Summary - Overall this week was okay, but took the entire week for me to find out I messed up. Ultimately I think I measured out my nutes incorrectly. Also really messed up at the very end of the week (Damnit). Everything at first was going pretty smoothly! No apparent transplant shock and a decent amount of root growth! But midway through the week, I started to notice yellowing on the new growth. At the time, I wasn't sure what the cause was and the PH kept rising (eventually got as high as 7.4). Did a bit of research online and thought it was an iron deficiency. One of the most common causes is a PH above 7. So I decided to step in and started to PH balance the nutes again. This help a bit and I just continued on. At the end of the week on res change day (Sunday), I brewed up a fresh batch of nutes (483 PPMs) using the exact same ratios and found the PPMs to be 133 lower than last week (which was at 616 PPMs). I was confused and checked the logs closer and I believe that last week I accidentally added too much Grow B (based on the PPM increase, I think I measured incorrectly and added 22mL instead of 11). This also explains the yellowing on the top growth. Now that the nutes are correct, I hope she'll recover and start growing again. Midway through the week I did a bit of defoliation and cleaned up the lowest set of leaves. But at the very end of the week, I accidentally broke off a leaf from both the middle and very top (Damnit Ensign). She seems to be okay for now and I really hope she recovers. All I have to say is that if I were sober right now, I'd be very depressed (*smokes a bowl). Towards the end of the week I noticed that my exhaust fan was getting clogged (a noticeable drop in the tent's static pressure). Ended up being a clogged carbon filter. Apparently using tap water in a humidifier can create white dust that will clog exhaust filters. So I had to disconnect and remove the carbon filter. I have a pre filter over the fan for now. I already blew the dust out of the carbon filter using a leaf blower and cleaned the pre filter cover. I'll connect it back later to see if it's unclogged (probably next week). Since things don't smell at all, I may just hang it disconnected until needed. On a positive note, I added a humidity and temperature controller to the tent! This has been really useful and have already noticed a big difference. RH has been way more stable and I don't have to refill the humidifier as often. I've also noticed less dust build up too which is great! Currently the controller is only connected to a humidifier, but I plan to add a heater soon. So I hope that next week will be better as she recovers from my miss feeding and accidental defoliation (Sorry girl). I thought it may have been the beginnings of powdery mildew, but I guess it's the minerals from the tap water. --- So had to disconnect the carbon filter. --- After removing the filter, the static pressure returned to normal. --- Going to run the fan with a simple pre-filter for now. --- Plan to use a leaf blower (outside) to push air through the carbon filter to hopefully push out as much dust build up. Introduction - Week 07 Summary - Another okay week of growing. As expected, this week was a recovery week. I'm just happy that throughout the entire week, she wasn't droopy. For the most part everything went quite smoothly. Just daily PH down adjustments. Towards the end of the week her roots started to grow again! As for top growth, the top leaf has gotten larger, but she still has not grown any new nodes. If new nodes don't start to form by end of next week, I'm thinking about topping her, but I'm not entirely sure on this one. If I do, it would be just under the node with the yellowing leaves. For nutrient strength, I kept it at week 1 strength (11mL for 3gal of water), but increased it a bit during the end-of-week res change (15mL for 3gal of water). For the most part, I'm going to leave it at this strength until she recovers a bit more. As for the tray girl, had to end her. Throughout the week she just kept getting weaker.. I added a tray cover to help shade her root zone but that didn't seem to help at all. By the end of the week, she just looked too weak to recover (RIP). Growing conditions have become more stable! The new smart controller works beautifully! For the most part, this controller has been able maintain the RH at a stable and consistent level of humidity within the tent. I can also now run distilled water in the humidifier! Before the controller, I could not justify refilling the humidifier every two days with distilled water. But the controller has cut the water consumption by quite a bit. Instead of refills every two days, I only need to refill the humidifier once or twice a week. So distilled water is okay. Using distilled water will also help to eliminate (or significantly reduce) the mineral dust as well. Plan to connect the controller to a heater to eventually make the grow conditions at a stable 75°F at 60% RH. Introduction - Week 08 Summary - Another recovery week. Adjusted room temps down to prevent root rot. The beginning of the week was a bit hectic. Because of warm water temps (got as high as 75°F), she was showing signs of root rot (brownish sludge). I immediately cleaned her roots and re-inoculated the nutrient solution with more beneficial bacteria and fungi. Also lowered the overall tent temperature from ~75°F to ~70°F (72°F average). So far, this has fixed the issue. Water temps are usually a few degrees lower than the tent temps so going to keep everything at a lower VPD range (70-72°F at 52-54% RH) and the water should stay below 70°F. Midway through the week received my mini heater! Using the smart controller, I now have better control of both relative humidity and temperature. Been able to maintain way more steady temperatures and RH during the day and night. Great! Since tent temperature and RH are way more consistent, I also stopped using the humidity dome (pyrex bowl) on the bucket. Also raised the fan up a bit. Growth has been stunted and she looks pretty badly burnt. But her roots are still growing and she doesn't look droopy. PPMs went up most of the week but started to drop towards the end. Going to continue to use the same nutrient strength for another week. But may lower it down next week if PPMs continue to rise. Introduction - Week 09 Summary - Not looking good for this run. But will give it another week before deciding to continue on or reset. Did basic checks everyday while adding PH down as the PH rose. Midway through the week I had to add more beneficial bacteria and fungi again. During the end of week res change, I decided to increase the concentration of beneficial bacteria and fungi to hopefully prevent the need to add more next week. I also reduced the concentration back to week 1 strength (491 PPMs). I did this because PPMs throughout the week kept rising (587 PPMs to 620 PPMs). She was drinking more water than nutes. Hopefully lowering the PPMs will help reduce this issue. On the more positive side, temps and RH were pretty stable. This has kept the water in the res below 70°F throughout the entire week. Great! Yet over the past two weeks, she still hasn't grown any taller. Still going to give her another week with daily foliar feedings to see if I can help her recover. I really don't want to reset, but I may have to if things don't start to improve. On a side note, I've been looking more into coco. Still not 100% sure yet, but I've been debating about temporarily making the switch. I'd be using the same nutes, but grown in coco/perlite. I dunno yet. Introduction - Week 10 Summary - Well this week went better than I thought it would! Decided to hold off on the coco (for now) and continue on with this DWC grow. Every day this week, I gave her a foliar feeding of CalMag and grow nutrients. I can see no damage at all from the spraying which is good. The water seems to dry up within a few hours and leaves no residue. Also gave her roots a flushing midway through the week. Cleaned her root zone with Hydrogen Peroxide and flushed the net basket with distilled water and beneficial bacteria and fungi. Towards the end of the week I gave her a bit of a defoliation. This cleared up enough room at the bottom to fill the net basket with hydroton (which is why she's shorter). Not sure if it's the lower PPMs in the bucket or the daily foliar feedings, but her top growth is looking a lot better. She's still really yellow, but not nearly as bad as last week. I think her leaves have stopped dying too! Not sure how, but I think her top leaves are even looking greener! I can also see that my accidental topping a few weeks ago (more like a FIM) has created an additional top or two (Oops but good too). Her nodes are also showing signs of new growth. Even her roots are looking healthier so I am hoping to see more growth next week as she continues to recover. As for next week, I'm going to use the same lowered PPMs for the bucket. Going to also continue with the daily foliar feedings, but at a higher dosage to see how she responds. Introduction - Week 11 Summary - The whole time I've been growing, I've been struggling with deficiencies, lockouts, and stunted growth. Towards the end of this week, I think I figured out why.. For the most part this week was pretty uneventful. It was more foliar spraying every day. I did try an Epsom salt foliar, but I think I may have used too much (PPMs in the nutrient solution spiked up the day after). I may try the salt again next week but a lower dosage. Otherwise it was the regular bucket checks and foliar feedings. I did a bit of trimming at the beginning of the week. I only trimmed off the dead parts and left the rest of the leaf. This was done to see if the decaying has stopped (which I think it has). I did change the exhaust filter midway through the week. It was covered in white powder. Hopefully now that I am using distilled water in the humidifier, I hope to see less clogging. I still see no reason to use the large carbon filter so going to be using a simple pre filter for now. At the end of the week, things got a bit interesting.. I decided to try using PH test drops (General Hydroponics) and discovered this entire time I've been growing, my PH pen has been misreading my nutes. Basically I've been feeding my girls solution that's way too acidic. Of course, I'm assuming that these drops are accurate. If they are, my cheap PH pen is reading a good 1.5 higher. This means if the pen was reading 7.5 the PH was actually closer to 6.0.. Damnit. So from now on, going to be using both the test drops and pen. Depending on how she grows, I'll most likely recalibrate the pen at the end of next week to match the drops better. I may also look into using test strips too as another way to double check the PH. This has changed the way I adjust my nutrients too. I am used to using PH Down for pretty much every res change and foliar feeding. The water has always read too high (7.0-7.5) but according to the PH drops, the water has been perfect (5.5-6.0) and this whole time I've been lowering it to dangerously low levels (4.0-4.5). Basically I've been drowning my girls in acid. Damnit Ensign... (*smokes a phat bowl). This can also explain why none of my beans are germinating. I've been frying them in acidic water. Well you live and you learn. At least from now on, I won't need to drop the PH as much. If anything I may need to start raising it up a bit. Also, perhaps AN's PH perfect technology does work? If my pen has been misreading this whole time, I dunno. All I can say is that if this new PH range fixes the issues I've been having in the garden, I am stoked to finally see some growth! It's been a struggle and I think I finally figured out why. Cheap pens are cheap (should have gone with Bluelab). To see how this new PH range affects growth, I'm going to be using the about the same nutrient strength for next week. I'll also use the same foliar feeding strength too (minus the Epsom salt treatment). But everything will be fed at this new PH range. Actually curious to see how she grows next week. Introduction - Week 12 Summary - Well this week went somewhat smoothly. Liking the new PH range for the bucket solution! Ran out of Great White so had a bit of root issues (or maybe because of the new PH). A lot of the old roots 'shedded off' midway through the week, but new root growth is looking healthier and white. PH also stayed pretty stable and didn't have to adjust as often as I usually have to. I hope next week will be better as she adjusts to the corrected PH levels. Unfortunately these higher PH levels are not too good for foliar feedings. By the end of the week, she was pretty droopy and I think it's because of the higher PH in her foliar feedings. Apparently the dangerously low PH levels I've been feeding her roots has been ideal for foliar feedings. With that said, going to lower the PH back down to those same levels again for next week (I think ~4.0 PH or lower). Only for foliars. Still going with the corrected PH for the nutrient solution. Got some PH test strips too. In terms of accuracy, I am relieved that they match the drops. Not really going to use them as often as the drops, but handy to have. Also this is the last week I'll be using both the drops and pen for each checkup. Going to rely on the pen again for daily readings. The pen was pretty consistent throughout the week, so will check with all 3 at the end of each week (pen, drops, and strip). Something I found out about foliar sprays and PH (*smokes a bowl). --- So I guess this week I've been incorrectly PH balancing my foliar sprays.. --- Ironically, the acidic PH levels I've been using in past sprays was perfect for foliar feedings (~3.9-4.5 PH) and when I adjusted the PH for her foliar feedings (~1.5 PH higher), this was a mistake. --- In the past I was foliar feeding at a PH of 5.4-5.8 which was actually more like 3.9-4.3 because of my cheap PH pen. This lower PH was really bad for her roots, but ideal for foliar feedings? --- Doing a bit of research online, I found PH levels as low as 3.0-3.7 for foliar sprays. --- Wow Ensign.. Introduction - Week 13 Summary - Well another week of stunted growth.. I think this will be the last week before I reset again for another attempt. Had almost no growth all week and top growth is looking yellow. She's also the same height. I just don't think she's gonna make it. I almost reset everything this week, but I'll give her another week (maybe two if growth improves). Basically ever since I've discovered and fixed my PH pen about 2 weeks ago, I really just want to reset and try again from the beginning at the proper PH levels (see Wednesday's rant). Since PPMs have still been rising all week, for next week, I'm lowering the PPMs a bit more. Also just see if it makes a difference, I won't be foliar feeding. This way all nutrient uptake will be through her roots and I hope to see PPMs finally start to drop. Hopefully the higher PH levels will improve my germination rates. --- My entire time growing (since the beginning of August 2020), it's been a struggle. --- I thought my main issues were caused by improper temperatures (air/water) and relative humidity. There were times I thought I had a bad batch of seeds or even thought it could have been due to expired nutrients. But from the beginning, all of this was caused by acidic PH.. --- In terms of grow log data, my PH readings over the past 7 months are now pretty much useless. --- My poor girls.. I was pretty much soaking my beans in solution PH'd to ~3.5-4.0.. No wonder why only a few of the seeds sprouted. --- Germination rates have been extremely low. Introduction - Week 14 Summary - Well this week may the second to the last entry for this grow log.. Early in the week I decided to end the current run and reset. She was looking stunted and I guess recovery was just not possible. After 13 weeks of growth, there was not much of anything. RIP... After cleaning and resetting the tent, I planted the last seed of this strain of 'OG Kush' by Phoenix Seeds on Tuesday. Unfortunately she hasn't germinated yet (been about 5 days so far). Dome temps and RH have been pretty stable all week (~81°F at 99% RH) which is good. But going to lower the temps a bit next week (~75-80°F). Also switching the lights schedule from 24/0 to 18/6. If she sprouts next week then great! The grow log is saved and everything continues on! The last one took a full 10 days to break the surface of the rockwool so not too worried (yet). But if nothing happens after next week, I'll have to end this grow log as yet another failure.. Improper PH levels have been the issue for the past 3 logs. Took me long enough to find out (Damnit Ensign..) but have fixed the faulty pen and hopefully PH won't be a problem anymore. On a more positive note, my next attempt will be 'Skywalker OG' by ILGM! Most likely will germinate in rockwool cubes again (may try soaking the seeds for 8-12hrs before planting). But going coco for next run! Plan to transplant into fabric pots with pre-buffered coco and perlite. Because of the lower startup cost, I can grow more than 1 at a time. Nice! Thinking about trying to grow 4 plants (may even try to germinate all 5 seeds at once). Not sure if any of them will make it to flower (or even germinate) but I'm pretty sure that coco will be better for a beginner like myself. I have no idea if my nutrients will even work for coco (Advanced Nutrients does have a coco line but I can't afford to switch). So still hoping that this last seed will germinate, but if not, then another grow log in a new medium will begin soon! Introduction - Week 15 Summary - Well... (*smokes a bowl) After 10 days... She finally sprouted!!! This will NOT be the final entry for this diary! This grow has been saved! Beginning of the week was a bit boring. Actually most of the week was boring. I did gradually lower the dome temp to ~75-78°F. But other than that, just basic temp checks and adding PH'd balance water to the tray. Did not water the cube at all. Didn't even spray the dome. At the end of the week (Friday) she finally popped! By Sunday, she was already fully sprouted and growing strong! Did a basic tray cleaning and inoculated the cube and tray with beneficial bacteria and fungi. No grow nutes yet. Well have to say that personally, I am extremely relieved she germinated. This was my first attempt at germinating using the corrected PH levels and I'm happy to say that it was a success! Took me 14 seeds to figure it out, but oh well. This strain was also going to be my last attempt at DWC before giving up and switching to coco, so I'm happy that it hasn't ended in complete failure. Also since PH levels during all of my previous DWC grows were incorrect (Damnit Ensign), I'm really glad that I get a chance to grow using the proper PH levels for once. Not sure what will happen, but so far things are looking pretty good! Could this be the first one to make it to harvest? To be honest, I'd be happy to make it to flower first. Next week will be the start of grow nutes (~200-300 PPMs) and hopefully I'll see decent roots by the end of the week. Most likely will veg in the tray for another week for roots to develop even more before transplanting into the bucket. This worked well last time so going to do the same. Introduction - Week 16 Summary - Pretty good week of growing! Still just a seedling so not much to do but add water to the tray as it evaporates. But happy to see that she's been getting bigger every day! Midway through the week I started feeding a low dosage of grow nutes. Around the same time, I decided to raise the water level to have the cube wick water from the tray. This was clearly a mistake. A slight bit of yellowing started to form towards the end of the week (over-watering). But she doing a lot better now that I've lowered the water level in the tray (cube is not wicking water anymore). But even with the over-watering, she seems to be growing nicely! Going to keep the cube a lot drier next week and will continue to veg her in the tray until more root growth occurs. Introduction - Week 17 Summary - Well this week was steady. Nothing too special. I think her roots are still recovering from the over-watering. But happy to see new root growth! Not as much as I'd like to see, but the new growth looking white and healthy. Going to veg her in the tray for at least another week. Top growth is looking okay too but can be better. Her second set of true leaves are getting larger. Unfortunately, I think there's a bit of interveinal chlorosis on the new growth. I can also see signs of her leaf tips burning. Plan to do a few CalMag foliar feedings next week (either daily or every other day). Also going to slightly increase the overall PPMs in the nutrient solution. For now, still trying to keep the cube dry and not having it wick the solution (only her roots are in the water). Not too sure on this one, but may also try to remove the humidity dome next week. Might try it for a day to see what the evaporation rate is like. If the water in the tray evaporates too fast, I may need to start with the water level higher and have the cube wick the nutrient solution for a bit. Not sure if her root-zone can handle the wicking yet so may wait. Hopefully next week will be better! This was not enough to reach the cube, but just enough to partially fill the bottom of the tray. Saving the rest for topping off tomorrow. --- Covered the tray with the dome (vents are both fully open). To increase airflow a bit more, also have the dome partially on to create a small air gap. --- Did not need to refill the humidifier. --- Great! I'll check PPMs tomorrow. Day 07 - Sunday - 04/11/21 - Total Days: 129 ----------------------------------- - [0900]: Did a quick morning check on temps! --- Dome temps were at 77°F at 72% RH --- The measuring cup still had the half cup of nutrient solution from yesterday. --- PH was at 5.9 --- I added a half cup of distilled water along with a little bit of PH Down. --- PH dropped to 5.6 --- PPMs were at 92 --- Added a bit of the nutrient solution to the tray. --- Will check PPMs and PH of the tray tonight. - [2120]: Checked on temps. --- Dome temps were at 73°F at 71% RH --- Checked the tray solution. --- PH was at 6.7 --- PPMs were at 283 --- Added more of the nutrient solution along with a bit of PH down --- PH dropped to 5.1 --- PPMs were at 192 --- PH was a bit low, but should be okay. --- Top growth is looking kinda yellow. It's mainly in her veins (interveinal chlorosis?), but she looks perky and grew a bit more this week so I'm happy! --- More root growth, but not a lot. Think her roots are still recovering from the over-watering I gave her last week. --- Plan to veg her another week in the tray. --- Going to increase the PPMs closer to 300 for next week. --- Also may do foliar feedings of CalMag to see if it helps with the yellowing. Introduction - Week 18 Summary - This week will be my final entry for this grow log... Going to have to end this log as yet another failure.. I'm not sure exactly sure what went wrong, but I think it was mainly due to extreme PH and PPMs fluctuations in the tray. Or overwatering. Or both. I think I should have transplanted as soon as her tap roots started to poke out the bottom of the cube. I dunno... Throwing in the towel on this grow.. Actually I'm done with DWC and hydroponic growing in general... I may be giving up on hydro (for now), but not on growing! For the next grow log, I'll be attempting to grow some 'OG Kush' from 'Alien Genetics.' Also going organic and growing in soil! But more importantly, I plan to grow in a no-till living super soil. Even going to create my own compost using Bokashi and actual worms (Red Wigglers). Recently, I've been looking into Build-A-Soil and have been sold on their organic approach to growing. The information on both their site and YouTube channel has been incredibly helpful for me to learn and get started. Their super soil can be created from scratch using the exact ingredients on their site (Coots Mix derived). Or for a newbie like me, the same soil can also be purchased premixed and ready to grow in. Going to be growing in a sub-irrigated planter. Instead of a DIY setup, plan to try the EarthBox. The bottom reservoir will allow the water to wick-up through the soil without over-watering the top soil. Of course I won't be bottom watering until roots have been fully established in the soil. Planning to soak the seed in water for 12-24hrs before planting in Build-A-Soil's 'Light' soil mix. As for pot size, plan to start in solo cups before transplanting into the EarthBox. The EarthBox will be filled with 1 cubic foot of fully amended super soil using their signature '3.0' mix. Worms and Bokashi will be added to help produce nutrients for my plant (at least this is how I think it will work). Will also be top dressing and may even try brewing a compost tea. So... BIG CHANGES!! Will not be using my PH/PPM pens anymore which is going to be interesting. Of course, the biggest change will be the way I feed. Instead of force feeding her roots with chelated nutrients, I'll be feeding the soil, worms, and microbial life which will produce all the nutrients she'll need. More importantly, she'll be able to eat all the food she needs at the rate she needs it. In a way, soil growing seems like providing a buffet of all you can eat food that she can uptake naturally at her own pace. While hydro growing is more like feeding food intravenously at a determined rate. Growing in soil also means no more bottle nutrients. So posting a sale on eBay for my lot of Advanced Nutrients. Topped it off to a full cup with distilled water. --- PH was at 5.7 --- PPMs were at 152 --- Going to save this to top off the tray. --- Also removed another sheet of cardboard. Now there's only a single sheet in-between the heat mat and the tray. --- Hopefully the boost of CalMag will help her recover. Day 03 - Wednesday - 04/14/21 - Total Days: 132 ----------------------------------- - [0930]: Did a quick morning check on temps! --- Dome temps were at 87°F at 99% RH --- Did not need to add water to the tray. - [1020]: Checked on temps. --- Dome temps were at 78°F at 99% RH --- Going to give her a Hydrogen Peroxide Flush (1:3 ratio). --- Filled a measuring cup with a 1/3 cup of Hydrogen Peroxide (pharmaceutical grade at 3% strength). --- Then topped the it off to 1 cup with distilled water. --- Since this is a flushing solution, I'm not going to bother to check PH nor PPMs. --- Removed her from the tray, held her over a sink and poured a bit of distilled water over the cube. --- Then poured more distilled water over the cube to re-saturate it. --- Shook out the water again before submerging her into the peroxide solution. --- Once the medium was fully saturated, I lifted her out and shook out as much as I could. --- Then gave her another dunk in the peroxide solution to fully saturate the medium again. --- Did this a few more times before leaving her in the solution to brew for a bit. --- While doing this, I noticed that the solution was bubbling. This is a good thing! The peroxide should be releasing fresh oxygen to her root zone while sterilizing the cube. --- Checked the tray solution. --- PH was at 5.8 --- PPMs were at 908 --- Added the entire cup of the diluted CalMag solution to the tray (PH 5.9 - 152 PPMs) --- Added a bit diluted PH down --- PH dropped to 5.5 --- PPMs were at 334 --- Poured out a bit of the tray solution. --- Removed her from the peroxide solution and shook out as much as I could before returning her to the tray. --- Hopefully this peroxide treatment will help to revitalize her. --- If she doesn't recover soon, then I may have to end this run a lot sooner than I thought.. This time, I'm not sure what I did wrong. Maybe I started feeding too early? Or was it over-watering? Or both? I dunno.. --- This grow journey has definitely been a struggle.. --- Think I'm going to finally throw in the towel for DWC and rockwool growing.. --- Was considering a switch to coco.. --- But recently I've been thinking about scrapping hydro and trying the basics. --- Which means soil growing. --- More specifically a living, no-till, super soil. --- Been researching a bit on organic cannabis growing and I guess if done right, all I have to do is add PH'd balanced water. --- I understand that soil yields less than hydro, but at this point, I'm not looking to yield a lot. I just want to learn to grow enough medicine to last me to the next harvest. --- The only crippling factor is that if I go soil (which I think I will), then most of my AN nutes will go to waste. I've barely opened a third of the nutes I purchased and haven't even used any bloom nutes yet. Damn. Seems to be an ideal meld of organic compost growing with a bit of hydro. --- Plus if things grow well, I can easily fit a second one in the tent (I can fit up to 4). --- Seems to fit a cubic foot of soil perfectly and I can 'cook' the soil in it as I get the seedling started. --- Will most likely end this run on Sunday. - [+0135]: Ho damn! Well it's done. --- Placed an order at Build-A-Soil for an EarthBox! --- Planning to start the seed using the soak method before planting into a solo cup using BAS's 'Light' mix and will veg her to an appropriate size before transplanting into the EarthBox which will be filled with their latest '3.0' mix. --- Also ordered a few things like BAS's craft and bokashi blend to help jumpstart the compost. Even going to try and find a local source for fresh earth worms (red wigglers) that I can add to the soil. --- As for mulch, going to use the plastic bag cover along with any trimmings I defoliate throughout the grow. --- If things go well, may even try brewing a compost tea. --- The best part is that if I can get this right, the same soil should be re-useable and should get even better with time. Or at the worst, if I fail, then the plant material can be broken up and should decompose into more food for the next attempt. --- Don't need to worry about PH or PPMs anymore neither which is great! Not going to check PH nor PPMs unless an issue occurs. --- So I'm done with hydro and bottle nutrients (for now). Going fully organic! --- Build-A-Soil has a ton of useful growing videos on YouTube which has been the source for my inspiration. I am going to try to grow something similar to what they have in quadrant 1 in their 10x10 grow tent. --- Going to be another learning curve, but stoked none the less!
