If you noticed, week 2 & 3 base nutrients did not change. I did this so as to not overload the gals - I could see signs that something was wrong and I did not want to push them more before fixing the issue. (I would have been locked out anyway*) -TOO MUCH Recharge!!! -Broken BlueLab PH Pen (Apparently we've been living at 7.7-8.7ish this entire time!!!) I have since replaced the broken pen with one locally from an official BlueLab retailer. PH Is now back on track (crazy it took 4 weeks to show any signs of lockout! Luck? Great genetics? I hope so) The 35ml/gl of Humic Acid I added did a great job of breaking up the gunk and to get the girls some oxygen and nutrients. We saw immediate improvements in two hours, and night and day differences overnight in every plant in the garden except for one. The Humic just wasn't enough for her (even with a little extra, and some light pruning). Since the one girl isn't doing so well even after the Humic Acid, I decided to swap nutes a couple days early in hopes that it will bounce her back + another bath - she looked better, just super small :( Now that I've corrected the PH, and will be using 1/3 the amount of recharge, we should be fine to get nutrients back on track and recover, explode - and flip. Fingers crossed! (If all goes well, we will be topping after a little stretch) ------------------ The mystery seeds in the back were somehow unaffected by the recharge situation. (Perhaps because they are halfway up the net cup, the dry roots are protected from the recharge in the reservoir?) Took the opportunity to practice some manifolding 😃 The roots did gunk up like the other 3, but the Humic Acid did its thing and helped a lot. No visible signs of lockout like the others.../shrug. ------------------ Next Day: The unhappy gal got worse over night. Roots are still completely covered - Humic and nute swap didn't seem to help at all. I gave her a BIG root prune - at this point those roots are holding her back, we now need her to focus on growing fresh new ones, not try and build on what's covered. Hoping there are some dry roots above the net cup / inside the rockwool, that will bounce her back. We saw stretch in the other two overnight!!!!! YUSS! -------------------- 03/26/21 The unhappy gal did not improve, the yellowing made its way to the center stalk so I pulled her. Recharge had covered the bottom of the rockwool, and was consequently sopping wet. Not a single root to be found, and a little bit of root rot had started to form in the rockwool. Broken PH pen / too much recharge, & sadly the humic didn't seem to help her. All in all, this could have been so much worse, all 5 plants potentially. Lessons learned! The other OG & Mystery seeds are growing again and doing better! Though it is very unfortunate that I chose to place the OG at the bottom of the net cup - I had no idea just how bushy the pheno is - they would have been SO much happier halfway up like the 2 mystery seeds. I topped them and gave them a light defoliation to help get some sun in and encourage branching.

Grow Questions

These two are recovering from a Broken PH Pen, and stunted by too much recharge(mislabeled for hydro). We've fixed the issues and are back on track, we've finally started to see some stretch again! My question is - should I defoliate more, to encourage branching? Or just wait?

Hi, personally I would wait and get her completely happy again, not long, couple of days, just let her recover from one thing before starting another stress, you dont want to be giving her too much to do at once! Hope this helps, happy growing 👍

Nute swap is in two days - the mystery seed is ready to flush I think. But I'm not sure about this OG Kush. Normally I would Ripen next - but should I go ahead and flush along with the mystery seed instead? Thoughts? Thanks

you dont need to flush anymore than (18 to) 24 hours in hydro, that's one of the main advantages actually : high precision on the timing before the chop, so you can really dial it in perfect. Do both individually or if you cant do one then let the other go and do it again before the chop, you wont notice a hitch i'm sure. Hope this helps ! 🚀

This is my first grow! DWC seemed like the way to go, as a way to maximize my harvest with what is allowed under my state's regulations. I did my best to keep things as straight forward and simplistic as possible, while sacrificing zero quality in the process!

Good luck with your grow mate! I'm on my first grow and going to be a DWC like yours. I'm getting a little anxious haha. It looks like it can be much harder work. You're doing a great job though man. I've dropped you a follow. I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on. Also how are you keeping your water at 22°c consistently? I'm worrying about that with mine. Surely if my tent is 25°C my water will end up that temp right?

BlueDreamer1commented4 years ago
@TickleToast, ah that's definitely justifiable! I can find change for that 😂. Awesome advice bro! Next thing is beating the fear of putting her in the DWC set up. Theres more that can go wrong in that 😂. I feel shes safer from the potential harm I can cause at the moment 😂

@BlueDreamer1, And yes the water bottles are fine, Just keep an eye out for when they crack, dont want your roots getting caught in them and getting torn up (worse case leakage and a PH change-lockout). 1-2$ a pop at walmart for the cold packs*.
TickleToast
TickleToastcommented4 years ago
@BlueDreamer1, You can get all that at Walmart for about 75 friend :) I like the Honeywell Mistmate, its cheap, and the light is easily covered. On high it needs refill once a day(60% humidity, med every other-ish for 45-55% in a 8x4). Not bad for DIY on a budget.

@tickletoast Are you mixing your nutrients straight into the reservoir or are you diluting them and adding them separately. I had an issue with my reservoir when mixing nutrients I got a chemical reaction and ended up with a build up of gunk. I now mix my nutrients separately in 3 gal buckets and ph each bucket before adding them to my reservoir I've not had the same problem since hope this helps bud

@Smokey89, Really just came down to Recharge mislabeling their product for hydro...its a soil product.../shrug. The only ones I can find using it in hydro with any success have 30gl RDWC systems and use ONE test packet per run. Directions say .5 tbsp per/gl

TickleToastcommented4 years ago
@Smokey89, Super curious what it was that was reacting to cause such a build up! I mix directly into my buckets - in the correct order, giving each 2 minutes-ish to sit (your supposed to do 5 I believe?). These chemicals actually take quite a bit longer to fully mix into a complete solution, than most people realize(it really doesn't matter once you throw the air stone in - it will finish on its own - keep to the order you'll avoid jellies etc). Diluting is a way to shave off some of that time and avoid a bad mix yes - but with what I was using it would not have helped. Recharge would have collected at the roots regardless - just a matter of time, minutes-hours at that. Now that I'm using Photo plus, its a non-issue :)

Hey m8! Ah I love good og kush Im partially addicted to the taste 😛 For your roots (you probably figured this out already) but take care of organic products and also beware of root stimulators! I used to make use of the plagron 'power roots'' and pure enzyme' they were labeled to work for hydro and they worked in my previous system but not in DWC I would get brown roots and slight organic smells from my reservoir and with water temps above 23c I got root rot last summer 😪 Now I only use base nutrients (i.e. the hydro A&B nutrients from canna, they have separate for veg+stretch and flower), bloom stimulator and a bit of organic tea supplement (and sugars from botanicare sweet raw) to 'fill up' the taste a bit more keeping my water res below 19c - during the summer I cant keep my res below 21c so I won't use the organic tea. Basically my roots grow faster and are more white and plants doing better now that I do not use the root stimulator... 😅 Good luck to you and I hope your root health does well for the rest of the grow!

@Slurpy_Terpy, Things have greatly improved since I stopped using Recharge and switched to Photo+! The thick roots at the base of the net pot are still very stained from it, and slightly smell of it. I had the tiniest bit of root rot one morning but it was because a bubbler stopped working and sat stagnant all night, swapped nutes and none since (I've also elevated and insulated my buckets, and use cold packs for a constant 68-76F)! Learning to identify the stuff suuuuure has been fun, haha. Luckily I had a pretty good idea of what to look out for and was on it very quickly. Thanks for the likes and comment my dude!

Hey man hows it going? :D I did only a few days flush on a harvest 3 months ago, I feel like all my buds share a common 'nasty' taste/smell :'( Now my last run I went for 20 days flush in dwc, my best ever results were back in 2014 in hydro with a 24 day flush and 84 day flower for a '9 week strain', I am missing smell in my 'short flush & early harvest' runs, my last run with the 20 day flush has much more personality and smell, the buds already smell good now that they are dry without any cure :D I switched from DWC to living soil for the summer (hot temps in dwc can be risky... >24c my hydroguard doesn't get the job done), hoping to get more smell and taste with this growing style (will brew and feed pk compost teas every week) but if it doesn't work im switching back to DWC :D Super Silver OG sounds so dank... Ive been looking at "crocketts SSOG" seeds for a while now I think I will make the move soon... Ill follow your diary closely :D
