You can totally remove the round part of the bulbs to get a bigger intensity because that plastic thing is eating up your light, and plus, when you remove it, your light will go directly to the plants instead of being spread around that plastic ball. As for your question, I think you can keep going like this since it's a pretty long process, your plants will have time to recover their health.
