the pointy things that sometimes cross each other are stipules? if i recall vocab correctly... they are not preflowers.
The axilla will contain the preflower -- the little nook at a growth node and above the leaf projecting out. it'll be a round little nub that you cannot distinguish male or female with your eye, initially. the stipules are on the sides of these nooks. unlike what you may read, their orientation does not correlate in any way with gender. they are not sex organs of the plant and have nothing to do with it. in the case of marijuana, it's likely vestigial.
eventually it'll project a little white hair called a stigma. that's female. If it ever looks to extend out on a twig or grape-like structure, it's male. More than 1 at any nook (if still symmetrical growth 1 on each side) then it is male.
