@chuckd76, I'm using a vipraspectra 250w in a fairly small tent. And honestly I like it for the price £79 but it does seem to keep the tent hotter than I expected too. I'm wondering if one of the two fans doesn't work maybe.... But for the seedling stage you can have it with just the blue light on and then pump up to dual spec when the plant is happyy and growing more. We'll see how it does, check out my grow

I use screw in LED bulbs for veg; cheap to buy and operate, generate very little heat, will keep internodes realy short. You need 30 watts per sq ft. If you want to see what they can do, check some of my diaries.

Hey chuckd! Another option you could look at is a 2ft 2 tube T5 and it works great the bulbs are cheap last long and only use 48 watts each bulb is 24watt. I have one and it is great they also make them is other sizes as well. I tried a cheaper led light for them but it didn't work as well as the T5 but it was a Cheap chinese one . So don't let that deter you from LED just make sure if you go that way get a decent one.Happy Growing!

There are many good recommendations (how many Watts per square foot), but I will emphasize something Mrs_Larimar said: “true watts.” Just make sure when shopping that you check what the actual wattage is and not the overarching manufacturer claim (can usually be found in the specs). Anything over a couple hundred watts will be fine for a normal sized grow tent and anything past the seedling stage, and you can purchase in the $100-200 range easily. I have a similar light to this in my veg. and flowering tents (see link), full spectrum, and despite the claim it is actually in the 300-400W range. I recently damaged some young plants from light intensity by having them too close (within 15 inches) - i.e. The light is strong enough. I expect there is a range of more expensive brand name ones, and cheap no-name ones, but I expect most of the components are similar in each one. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07HK8SWH7/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_awdb_FLMNCb9G1HACV

i most time go with my 2x26 W secret jardins. But everything under 100 w will do very great for the seedlings until day21-24, after that its better to go stronger. that depends in how big your growspace is. Normally you say 100 true watt for 1 squaremeter. but for later vegetation and flowering i would double it minimum
